We propose a novel concept for detecting color transition by the inner product (IP) of RGB unit vectors. A digital microscope-based detector and a Visual Basic program were developed in-house. The concept is applied to indicator-based flow titration. The IP is 1 or less then 1 if the vector's direction is the same or different, respectively. The IP's change can be used as a criterion for the indicator's color transition. The present IP-based approach is simple, economical, and versatile because it is applicable to any color transition without selecting an analytical wavelength.Various kinds of polysaccharides found in a wide variety of plants, bacteria, crustaceans and insects form hydrogels via physical aggregation in aqueous media. The major mass of hydrogels is water filled, ca. 95 - 99.5%, in a network structure, although the solid shape of the gel is maintained. In this paper, firstly the wide range of gelation mechanisms are briefly described, and then the thermal analysis of representative gel-forming polysaccharides, such as carrageenan, alginate, galactomannan, and pectin, is introduced. By differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), gel-sol and the sol-gel transition temperature of thermoreversible hydrogels are measured and phase diagram is established. It is suggested that binary systems showing sinusoidal gel-sol-gel transition are capable of being assembled. By thermomechanical analysis (TMA), the dynamic modulus (E') at around 1 × 104 Pa of thermo-irreversible hydrogels was obtained using a sample holder designed to measure the viscoelastic properties in water. Reliable coordination is shown between the results obtained by DSC and TMA. In this review, the current research and several topics on concerning the thermal properties of polysaccharide physical hydrogels are introduced.

Whether the lobe-specific lymph node dissection is an alternative to systematic lymph node dissection for early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer remains controversial. An elaborate meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of lobe-specific lymph node dissection in early-stage patients.

A systematic literature search was conducted up to February 19, 2020 in PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. The outcomes including overall survival (OS), complications, and recurrence rate were extracted and analyzed.

Nine studies including one randomized controlled trial (RCT) and eight retrospective cohort studies with 8499 non-small-cell lung cancer patients were included. The results indicated that lobe-specific lymph node had a lower rate of postoperative complication (relative risk [RR] 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.72-0.95, P = 0.006). No significant difference was observed between lobe-specific lymph node and systematic lymph node dissection in OS (hazard rate = 1.12, 95% CI 0.81-1.54, P = 0.501) with high heterogeneity (I

= 71.9%).

Lobe-specific lymph node can reach a comparable long-term prognosis in some highly selected patients. However, these results should be viewed cautiously with the existence of high heterogeneity. Due to the high heterogeneity, a strict patient selection process by experienced thoracic surgeons was recommended before validating lobe-specific lymph node.

We examined the prevalence of insomnia symptoms in healthcare workers and their perceived need for a sleep intervention. Participants were 62 nurses working full-time at a U.S. hospital. These nurses were asked about background characteristics, perceived stress, sleep concerns, and need for a sleep intervention. They also participated in 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and actigraphy sleep study. A qualitative analysis showed that the majority (92%) of participants reported at least one sleep concern with insomnia-related concerns being most prevalent (68%). Quantitative analyses indicated that those with insomnia-related concerns had higher perceived stress overall and lower EMA sleep sufficiency and sleep quality. Moreover, participants with insomnia concerns had shorter actigraphy-measured nap duration prior to non-workdays than those without. Nearly all (95%) expressed interest in participating in a sleep intervention; an online format and mindfulness contents were most preferred. Our results suggest a high prevalence of insomnia symptoms and a high interest in a sleep intervention in nurses. Information obtained from this study could be used to deliver a tailored sleep intervention for nurses whose role in public health is essential. The body surface area (BSA) of animals is generally estimated by multiplying the k value (constant) by the measured body weight (BW) raised to the power of 2/3 (Meeh's formula). Computed tomography (CT) scanners generate detailed 3-dimensional (3D) images of objects, and image analysis does not depend on operator skill. Therefore, the analysis of CT images provides accurate and reproducible BSA measurements. In this study, we measured the BSA of 25 male Hartley guinea pigs from 3 to 36 weeks of age (working BW range 0.233 to 1.160 kg) using a CT scanner and 3D analysis software. We concluded that the k value for male Hartley guinea pigs was 8.37, based on the mean k value of the 25 animals.Microbial rhodopsins, comprising a protein moiety (rhodopsin apoprotein) bound to the light-absorbing chromophore retinal, function as ion pumps, ion channels, or light sensors. However, recent genomic and metagenomic surveys showed that some rhodopsin-possessing prokaryotes lack the known genes for retinal biosynthesis. Since rhodopsin apoproteins cannot absorb light energy, rhodopsins produced by prokaryotic strains lacking genes for retinal biosynthesis are hypothesized to be non-functional in cells. In the present study, we investigated whether Aurantimicrobium minutum KNCT, which is widely distributed in terrestrial environments and lacks any previously identified retinal biosynthesis genes, possesses functional rhodopsin. We initially measured ion transport activity in cultured cells. A light-induced pH change in a cell suspension of rhodopsin-possessing bacteria was detected in the absence of exogenous retinal. Furthermore, spectroscopic analyses of the cell lysate and HPLC-MS/MS analyses revealed that this strain contained an endogenous retinal. These results confirmed that A. minutum KNCT possesses functional rhodopsin and, hence, produces retinal via an unknown biosynthetic pathway. These results suggest that rhodopsin-possessing prokaryotes lacking known retinal biosynthesis genes also have functional rhodopsins.A nitrous oxide (N2O)-consuming bacterium isolated from farmland soil actively consumed N2O under high pH conditions. An acetylene inhibition assay did not show the denitrification of N2 to N2O by this bacterium. When N2O was injected as the only nitrogen source, this bacterium did not assimilate N2O. A polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that this bacterium did not have the typical nosZ gene. This bacterium belonged to Chitinophagaceae, but did not belong to known families that include bacteria with the atypical nosZ. This is the first study to show that a non-denitrifier actively reduces N2O, even under high pH conditions. The recent outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19, primarily involves the respiratory system with viral pneumonia as a predominant manifestation. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 has various cardiovascular manifestations which increase morbidity and mortality in COVID-19. Patients with underlying cardiovascular diseases and conventional cardiovascular risk factors are predisposed for COVID-19 with worse prognosis. The possible mechanisms of cardiovascular injury are endothelial dysfunction, diffuse microangiopathy with thrombosis and increased angiotensin II levels. Hyperinflammation in the myocardium can result in acute coronary syndrome, myocarditis, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death. The high level of cardiac troponins and natriuretic peptides in the early course of COVID-19 reflects an acute myocardial injury. The complex association between COVID-19 and cardiovascular manifestations requires an in-depth understanding for appropriate management of these patients. Till the time a specific antiviral drug is available for COVID-19, treatment remains symptomatic. This review provides information on the cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular manifestations of COVID-19.Background & objectives The world is currently under the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, caused by SARS-CoV-2. The objective of the present investigation was to repurpose the drugs with potential antiviral activity against receptor-binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein among 56 commercially available drugs. Therefore, an integrative computational approach, using molecular docking, quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamics, was performed to unzip the effective drug-target interactions between RBD and 56 commercially available drugs. Methods The present in silico approach was based on information of drugs and experimentally derived crystal structure of RBD of SARS-CoV-2 S protein. Molecular docking analysis was performed for RBD against all 56 reported drugs using AutoDock 4.2 tool to screen the drugs with better potential antiviral activity which were further analysed by other computational tools for repurposing potential drug or drugs for COVID-19 therapeutics. Nazartinib mouse Results Drugs such as chalcone, grazoprevir, enzaplatovir, dolutegravir, daclatasvir, tideglusib, presatovir, remdesivir and simeprevir were predicted to be potentially effective antiviral drugs against RBD and could have good COVID-19 therapeutic efficacy. Simeprevir displayed the highest binding affinity and reactivity against RBD with the values of -8.52 kcal/mol (binding energy) and 9.254 kcal/mol (band energy gap) among all the 56 drugs under investigation. Interpretation & conclusions In the current investigation, simeprevir was identified as the potential antiviral drug based on the in silico findings in comparison to remdesivir, favipiravir and other 53 drugs. Further, laboratory and clinical investigations are needed to be carried out which will aid in the development of quick therapeutics designed for COVID-19.We found unusual digenean intramolluscan stages, sporocysts and cercariae, in gastropods Sulcospira dautzenbergiana (Morelet) (Caenogastropoda Pachychilidae) from Southern Vietnam and named them Cercaria cattieni 1. These cercariae have a stylet and thus belong to the Xiphidiata. However, such combination of characters as extremely large body size and I-shaped excretory bladder has not been found before in any other xiphidiocercariae. We obtained COI, ITS1, 5.8S + ITS2, and 28S rDNA sequences for C. cattieni 1. The latter allowed us to specify the phylogenetic position of the discovered cercariae C. cattieni 1 falls within the superfamily Microphalloidea and is most closely grouped to Pachypsolus irroratus (Rudolphi, 1819) (Pachypsolidae), the sea turtle parasite. Information on the family Pachypsolidae is limited. Judging from the molecular phylogeny, C. cattieni 1 might be the larva of the Pachypsolidae, documented for the first time.
