Very little is known about subclinical pulmonary TB (PTB), a recently described intermediate state, in high-income countries.

We used primary source data to identify a 16-year retrospective cohort of patients with PTB. Demographic and mycobacteriologic features in patients with subclinical and clinical disease were compared, and the reason for assessment of patients with subclinical disease was described. Diagnostic chest radiographs in patients with subclinical disease were read by two independent readers and were arbitrated by a third reader. Linear regression was used to compute time to culture positivity (in days) in relationship to the change in chest radiograph findnonstratified (by 3.3days) and stratified (by 4.5-5.8days) analysis (active case-finding groups). DNA fingerprint clustering was associated with male sex and a longer time between arrival and diagnosis.

Long-term macrolide therapy has been shown to provide benefit to those with a range of chronic respiratory conditions. However, concerns remain about the impact of macrolide exposure on the carriage and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes within the oropharynx. The potential for onward transmission of resistance from macrolide recipients to their close contacts also is poorly understood.

Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from 93 individuals with chronic respiratory conditions, 53 of whom were receiving long-term macrolide therapy. An oropharyngeal swab also was collected from a close cohabiting contact of each patient. To determine the impact of glaucoma severity on rates of change of minimum rim width (MRW), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and macular ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness.

Glaucoma patients and healthy subjects had optical coherence tomography scans at 6-month intervals. Individual rates of change for MRW, RNFL, and GCL thickness were estimated with ordinary least-squares regression. Linear mixed-effect models were used to estimate the rate of change of each parameter and evaluate the impact of glaucoma severity (expressed by visual field mean deviation, MD) and age on these rates.

A total of 132 glaucoma patients and 57 healthy subjects were followed for a median of 4.3 years and 3.7 years, respectively. Healthy subjects had a statistically significant deterioration in MRW (-1.66 µm/year), RNFL (-0.46 µm/year), and GCL thickness (-0.22µm/year). While glaucoma patients had a faster rate of change in each parameter compared with healthy subjects, only GCL thickness showed a statistically significant group difference (mean difference -0.17 µm/year; P=.03). Older baseline age was associated with faster GCL thickness change (-0.07 µm/year; P=.03), but not other parameters. Baseline MD had no impact on the subsequent rates of change in any of the parameters.

To evaluate the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with ocular hypertension (OHT).

Parallel arm, single masked, randomized controlled trial.

Sixty patients with ocular hypertension and IOP > 21 and < 30 mmHg were recruited at a tertiary eye care centre in India. Thirty patients (group 1) underwent six weeks of one hour daily MBSR sessions, while the other 30 patients (group 2) were waitlisted and kept on follow-up. The primary outcome was change in IOP (ΔIOP) after six weeks of MBSR. Secondary outcomes were effect on serum cortisol level, diurnal variation of IOP, vessel perfusion and vessel density on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and quality of life (QOL).

At six weeks, a significant decrease in IOP was noted in group 1 (23.05 ± 1.17 to 19.15 ± 1.45 mmHg; P=.001) compared with group 2 (22.55 ± 0.98 mmHg to 22.37 ± 1.07 mmHg; P=.107). The ΔIOP was significantly greater in group 1 (3.93 ± 1.47) than group 2 (0.17 ± 0.58; P = .001). The diurnal fluctuation of IOP decreased in group 1 (4.87 ± 1.13 mmHg to 2.73 ± 0.98 mmHg; P=.001) as compared with group 2 (4.50 ± 0.86 mmHg to 4.30 ± 0.83 mmHg; P=.227). Significant improvement in vessel perfusion, vessel density, and flux index was noted on OCTA in group 1 compared with group 2. Group 1 showed a significant decrease (P ≤ .001) in serum cortisol level and an improved QOL (P=.001).

However, until now, there are not extensive reviews about the development of Bi-based materials and their application in bacterial inactivation in aqueous solutions. For this reason, this work has focused on summarizing the state of the art related to the inactivation of Gram- and Gram + pathogenic bacteria under visible light irradiation using different Bi-based micro and nano structures. In this sense, the photocatalytic bacterial inactivation mechanisms are analyzed, considering several modifications. The factors that can affect the photocatalytic performance of these materials in real conditions and at a large scale (e.g., water characteristics, pH, light intensity, photocatalyst dosage, and bacteria level) have been studied. Furthermore, current alternatives for improving the photocatalytic antibacterial activity and reuse of Bi-based materials (e.g., surface engineering, crystal facet engineering, doping, noble metal coupling, heterojunctions, Z-scheme junctions, coupling with graphene derivatives, magnetic composites, immobilization) have been explored. According to several reports, inactivation rate values higher than 90% can be achieved by using the modified Bi-based micro/nano structures, which become them excellent candidates for photocatalytic water disinfection. Here, effort was made to explore the role of Pseudomonas aeruginosa SR17 in alleviating naphthalene via catabolism and simultaneously producing biosurfactant. The results showed up to 89.2% naphthalene degradation at 35 °C and pH 7. The GC/MS analysis revealed the generation of naphthalene degradation intermediates. Biosurfactant production led to the reduction of surface tension of the culture medium to 34.5 mN/m. The biosurfactant was further characterized as rhamnolipids. LC-MS of the column purified biosurfactant revealed the presence of both mono and di rhamnolipid congeners. Rhamnolipid find tremendous application in medical field and as well as in detergent industry and since they are of biological origin, they can be used as favorable alternative against their chemical counterparts. The study demonstrated that catabolism of naphthalene and concurrent formation of rhamnolipid can result in a dual activity process, namely environmental cleanup and production of a valuable microbial metabolite.
