The Vision and Change report called for the biology community to mobilize around teaching the core concepts of biology. This essay describes a collection of resources developed by several different groups that can be used to respond to the report's call to transform undergraduate education at both the individual course and departmental levels. First, we present two frameworks that help articulate the Vision and Change core concepts, the BioCore Guide and the Conceptual Elements (CE) Framework, which can be used in mapping the core concepts onto existing curricula and designing new curricula that teach the biology core concepts. Second, we describe how the BioCore Guide and the CE Framework can be used alongside the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education curricular rubric as a way for departments to self-assess their teaching of the core concepts. Finally, we highlight three sets of instruments that can be used to directly assess student learning of the core concepts the Biology Card Sorting Task, the Biology Core Concept Instruments, and the Biology-Measuring Achievement and Progression in Science instruments. Approaches to using these resources independently and synergistically are discussed. We previously developed an online multiple-choice question authoring, learning, and self-assessment tool that we termed Quizzical. Here we report statistical analyses over two consecutive years of Quizzical use in a large sophomore-level introductory molecular biology course. Students were required to author two questions during the term and were also afforded opportunities to earn marks for quiz participation. We found that students whose final grade was "A," "B," or "C" exhibited similar patterns of Quizzical engagement. The degree to which students participated was positively associated with performance on formal exams, even if prior academic performance was considered as a covariable. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/gsk591-epz015866-gsk3203591.html During both terms investigated, students whose Quizzical engagement increased from one exam to the next earned statistically significant higher scores on the subsequent exam, and students who attempted Quizzical questions from earlier in the term scored higher, on average, on the cumulative portion of the final exam. We conclude that the structure and value of the assignment, and the utility of Quizzical as a discipline-independent active-learning and self-assessment tool, enabled students to better master course topics. The 2019 Undergraduate Biology Education Research Gordon Research Conference (UBER GRC), titled "Achieving Widespread Improvement in Undergraduate Education," brought together a diverse group of researchers and practitioners working to identify, promote, and understand widespread adoption of evidence-based teaching, learning, and success strategies in undergraduate biology. Graduate students and postdocs had the additional opportunity to present and discuss research during a Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) that preceded the GRC. This report provides a broad overview of the UBER GRC and GRS and highlights major themes that cut across invited talks, poster presentations, and informal discussions. Such themes include the importance of working in teams at multiple levels to achieve instructional improvement, the potential to use big data and analytics to inform instructional change, the need to customize change initiatives, and the importance of psychosocial supports in improving undergraduate student well-being and academic success. The report also discusses the future of the UBER GRC as an established meeting and describes aspects of the conference that make it unique, both in terms of facilitating dissemination of research and providing a welcoming environment for conferees.Purpose Formulation of new drug delivery system as Natamycin (NT)-loaded nanoparticle niosomal formulae mixed in different polymer gel, with the addition of ketorolac tromethamine (KETR). Pharmaceutical and experimental assessments to evaluate their safety and efficacy in treating Aspergillus keratitis. Methods NT nanoparticle niosomes prepared by reverse-phase evaporation technique were mixed in different polymers, with the addition of KETR. Two formulae are evaluated in this study F1 [NT-loaded nanoparticle niosomes/0.5% KETR 4% carboxymethyl cellulose (Na.CMC) gel], F2 [NT-loaded nanoparticle niosomes/0.5% KETR 2% hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC)-E4 gel], and mixed marketed products (MMP), namely Natamet® and Ketoroline® suspension eye drops. NT-loaded nanoparticle niosomes/0.5% KETR were evaluated through viscosity determination, mucoadhesive attractive force, and in vitro NT release studies. The in vivo antifungal evaluation was performed on 45 albino rabbits, Aspergillus species were inoculated in right corneas of all rabbits, and then rabbits were subdivided into 3 groups, 15 rabbits each Group A received F1, Group B received F2, and Group C received MMP. Daily examination of rabbits was performed for evaluation of corneal infiltration, and signs of iritis. Two weeks later, rabbits were euthanized; their corneas were dissected at the limbus and sent for histopathological evaluation. Results F1 had a higher viscosity and more mucoadhesive power than F2, and showed better results on corneal infiltration, and level of hypopyon. These results were consistent with the histopathological examination. Conclusion The formula of NT-loaded nanoparticle niosomes/0.5% KT 4% Na.CMC gel has the best results from all pharmaceutical in vitro evaluations and a better cure percent in experimental application.OBJECTIVE To investigate the use of the aortic balloon occlusion technique to assist total aortic arch replacement (TAR) with frozen elephant trunk (FET) to shorten the lower body circulatory arrest (CA) time and raise the nadir temperature during cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS This retrospective study reviewed consecutive patients that underwent aortic balloon occlusion to assist TAR with FET and patients that received conventional TAR with FET procedures. Preoperative characteristics, perioperative characteristics and postoperative outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The study included130 patients treated with aortic balloon occlusion and 230 patients treated with conventional TAR with FET. The 30-day mortality rate was similar between the aortic balloon occlusion and conventional groups (4.62% versus 7.83%, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that aortic balloon occlusion reduced the incidence of acute kidney injury, hepatic injury and red blood cell transfusion. The application of aortic balloon occlusion reduced the mean ± SD CA time from 17.
