The classification performance of the statistical methods binary logistic regression (BLR), multinomial and penalized multinomial logistic regression (MLR, pMLR), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and the machine learning algorithms naïve Bayes classification (NBC), decision trees (DT), random forest (RF), artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (linear, polynomial or radial) (SVM), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB) is examined in skeletal sex/ancestry estimation. The datasets used to test the performance of these methods were obtained from a documented human skeletal collection, Athens Collection, and the Howells Craniometric data set. For their implementation, an R package has been written to search for the optimum tuning parameters under cross-validation and perform sex/ancestry classification. It was found that the classification performance may vary significantly depending on the problem. From the methods tested, LDA and the machine learning technique of linear SVM exhibit the best performance, with high prediction accuracy and relatively low bias in most of the tests. ANN and pMLR can generally be considered to give satisfactory predictions, whereas NBC when using metric traits and DT are the worst of the classification methods examined. The possibility of making the models developed via the machine learning algorithms applicable to other assemblages without the use of a training sample is also discussed.

A missing mandible is a common problem in facial identification cases requiring forensic facial approximation or reconstruction. The Sassouni and Sassouni-Plus methods which are currently used to predict the missing mandible from the cranium produce low levels of accuracy.

This study proposes a new method for the estimation of the overall dimensions of the mandible based upon linear cranial measurements, the proposed method has the potential to be utilised in the facial reconstruction of a range of adult skulls with dentition.

21 measurements were taken from a sample of 90 skulls, 44 male, 43 female and three juvenile, originating from 9 different geographical areas. Ordinary least-squares regression, hierarchical cluster analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to investigate trends in the data and to produce equations for the estimation of condylar height, corpus length and anterior height.

This device is effective because it automatically extracts DNA from oral mucosal cells or from blood stains and saliva collected at a crime scene, with subsequent polymerase chain reaction performed to produce a DNA profile. This report summarizes the results of using the RapidHIT™ ID system by collecting a variety of actual forensic samples from postmortem bodies at different stages of decomposition, which were subsequently analyzed using these cartridges.The present study reports significant improvements in the removal of ammoniacal nitrogen from wastewater which is an important problem for many industries such as dyes and pigment, distilleries and fisheries. Pilot plant studies (capacity, 1 m3/h) on synthetic wastewater using 4-amino phenol as model nitrogen containing organic compound and two real industrial effluents of high ammoniacal nitrogen content were carried out using hydrodynamic cavitation. Two reactor geometries were evaluated for increased efficiency in removal-orifice and vortex diode. Effect of initial concentration (100-500 mg/L), effect of pressure drop (0.5-5 bar) and nature of cavitating device (linear and vortex flow for cavitation) were evaluated along with effect of salt content, effect of hydrogen peroxide addition and aeration. Initial concentration was found to have significant impact on the extent of removal ~ 5 g/m3 removal for initial concentration of 100 mg/L and up to 12 g/m3 removal at high concentration of 500 mg/L. Interestingly, significant improvement of the order of magnitude (up to 8 times) in removal of ammoniacal nitrogen could be obtained by sparging air or oxygen in hydrodynamic cavitation and a very high removal of above 80% could be achieved. The removal of ammoniacal nitrogen by vortex diode was also found to be effective in the industrial wastewaters and results on two different effluent samples of distillery industry indicated up to 75% removal, though with longer time of treatment compared to that of synthetic wastewater. The developed methodology of hydrodynamic cavitation technology with aeration and vortex diode as a cavitating device was found to be highly effective for improving the efficiency of the conventional cavitation methods and hence can be highly useful in industrial wastewater treatment, specifically for the removal of ammoniacal nitrogen.Dual-perspective high-speed imaging and acoustic detection is used to characterise cavitation activity at the tip of a commercial 20 kHz (f0) ultrasonic horn, over 2 s sonications across the range of input powers available (20 - 100%). Shadowgraphic imaging at 2 Mfps, from an orthogonal perspective, probes cluster collapse and shock wave generation at higher temporal resolution, facilitating direct correlation of features within the acoustic emission data generated by the bubble activity. f0/m subharmonic collapses of the primary cavitation cluster directly beneath the tip, with m increasing through integer values at increasing input powers, are studied. Shock waves generated by periodic primary cluster collapses dominate the non-linear emissions of the cavitation noise spectra. Transitional input powers for which the value of m is indistinct, are identified. Overall shock wave content within the emission signals collected during sonications at transitional input powers are reduced, relative to input powers with distinct m. The review also evaluates functional foods with critical but comprehensive perspectives into probiotics and prebiotics, their immune boosting and mechanisms of action. It is recommended that further mechanistic and translational studies are conducted to promote health, social life and also empower poverty-stricken communities.

Twenty-four healthy Chinese volunteers from a four-period crossover TQT study orally received 200 mg/d AT, 400 mg/d AT, 400 mg/d moxifloxacin, and a placebo in a random order for 5 d for each. QT interval samples were collected on d 1 and d 5.
