In conclusion, isolation-and-quarantine was the most cost-effective intervention. However, personal protection combined with isolation-and-quarantine was the optimal strategy for averting more cases. Adult studies show an association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and body mass index (BMI). The aim of this retro perspective exploratory study was to investigate SUA in obese children and adolescents and the effects of a subsequent weight reduction. Materials and Methods One hundred and seventy-one children (age 4-18), with obesity (i.e. BMI-SDS of +2 or higher) were included in a multifactorial lifestyle intervention. The children participating were annually measured for anthropometrics, blood samples and DEXA-scans for up to 3 years. Eighty-nine children were included for follow-up analysis. Results After a follow-up of 20.7 ± 9.4 months a reduction in BMI-SDS of -0.34 ± 0.53 (p less then 0.01) was observed. SUA was found to be positively associated with changes in BMI-SDS. SUA levels decreased in the 65 children who lost weight during the trial, conversely, SUA increased in the 23 children who gained weight during the trial (p less then 0.01 between groups). We aimed to investigate the incidence and prevalence trends of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Daegu-Kyungpook province of South Korea from 2017 to 2020. Methods This study was a multicenter, retrospective study conducted in eight IBD referral centers located in the Daegu-Kyungpook province. Children and adolescents of ≤18 years who were initially diagnosed with IBD between 2017 and 2020 were included. The annual number of children and adolescents newly diagnosed with IBD and the annual resident population of children and adolescents ≤18 years of age in the Daegu-Kyungpook province were investigated to calculate the annual incidence and prevalence in the region. Results A total 304 children and adolescents that had been diagnosed with IBD were included in this study. Among these patients, 71.4% had been diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD), and 28.6% with ulcerative colitis (UC). The population based annual incidences of IBD from 2017 to 2020 were each 7.24, 6.82, 10.27, and 13.33 per 100,000, respectively (P for trend less then 0.001), 4.48, 5.26, 7.39, and 9.8 per 100,000, respectively, for CD (P for trend less then 0.001), and 2.76, 1.56, 2.88, and 3.53 per 100,000, respectively, for UC (P for trend = 0.174). Surgical aims include obtaining complete tumor resection without risk for patients, to avoid severe bleeding, cardiac arrest, and embolization, and to avoid cardiac bypass if possible. Objective To describe and discuss the surgical strategies to deal with pediatric tumors with vascular extension and propose a protocol. Method Retrospectivly review the experience of treating patients with vascular extension in a single institution, describing different scenarios and a decision making fluxogram based on the preoperative evaluation regarding the surgical techniques and the need for cardiac bypass that are adequatcol is presented focusing on the surgical treatment of such condition. Conclusion Surgery strategy is highly impacted by the presence of vascular extension in pediatric tumors. Surgeons should be aware of potential complications and how to prevent them. Predictors of re-hospitalization could help identify sepsis survivors who may benefit from targeted interventions. Our goal was to determine whether low heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, is associated with re-hospitalization in pediatric septic shock survivors. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective, observational cohort study of patients admitted between 6/2012 and 10/2020 at a single institution. Patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with septic shock who had continuous heart rate data available from the bedside monitors and survived their hospitalization were included. HRV was measured using age-normalized z-scores of the integer HRV (HRVi), which is the standard deviation of the heart rate sampled every 1 s over 5 consecutive minutes. The 24-h median HRVi was assessed on two different days the last 24 h of PICU admission ("last HRVi") and the 24-h period wHRVi was consistently associated with a higher likelihood of re-hospitalization. Conclusion In pediatric septic shock survivors, a smaller recovery in HRV during the index admission is significantly associated with re-hospitalization. This continuous physiologic measure could potentially be used as a predictor of patients at risk for re-hospitalization and lower health-related quality of life.
