Polyphenol extracts are widely used as a nutraceutical supplement for their well-known health-promoting role. In this paper, a preliminary untargeted metabolic screening was carried out by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)-time of flight (TOF)/TOF on a pool of chocolate samples made by cocoa beans of different geographical areas. Then, a targeted approach was developed for polyphenol quantification by an optimized Liquid chromatography (LC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) method multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) ion mode. Detection limit of polyphenol standard ranged between 1 and 25 pg/μl with variation coefficient lower than 15%. External calibration curves were used for quantification of polyphenols in 18 samples. Fifty polyphenols were detected in a single LC-MRM/MS run and quantified by monitoring almost 90 transitions in a 5-minute run. The polyphenols content of different cocoa beans from several countries was finally compared by principal component analysis (PCA) statistical analysis suggesting that the chocolate made by Ecuador cocoa beans showed the highest level of polyphenols.Although studies of biogeography in soil bacterial communities have attracted considerable attention, the generality of these patterns along with assembly processes and underlying drivers is poorly understood in the inner tissues of plants. Plant tissues provide unique ecological habitats for microorganisms, which play an essential role in plant performance. Here, we compared core bacterial communities among five soil-plant associated compartments of common bean across five sampling sites in China. Neutral and null modelling consistently suggested that stochastic processes dominated the core community assembly processes and escalated from the belowground compartments to the inner tissues of aerial plant parts. The multiple distance-decay relationships also varied and had flattened patterns in the stem endosphere, which were shaped by distinct environmental factors in each compartment. Coexistence patterns also varied in topological features, in addition with the sparsest networks in the stem endosphere resulted from the interaction with the stochastic processes. This study considerably expanded our understanding of various biogeographic patterns, assembly processes, and the underlying mechanisms of core bacterial communities between aerial and belowground compartments of common bean. Drip chemigation is the application of pesticides to the soil through trickle (drip) irrigation systems, and can overcome a number of the drawbacks typical of foliar insecticide applications.

We conducted a two-year study in five commercial fields of staked tomatoes in western North Carolina to compare the efficacy, economics and environmental impact of drip chemigation versus foliar sprays. Drip chemigation significantly reduced insecticide inputs, utilized more selective and environmentally compatible insecticides, and reduced the time lost to reentry intervals, while maintaining comparable efficacy and economic returns.

Drip chemigation was an effective tool for managing key insect pests, provided a broad range of human and environmental health benefits, and will likely become increasingly cost-effective in the future as insecticide patents expire and more insecticide options become available.

This study aims to understand early (< 24 h post ictus) and late (up to 12 months) survival post aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), with a focus on rurality and socioeconomic status.

A statewide population-based cohort of aSAH cases in Tasmania, Australia, was established from 2010-2014 utilising multiple overlapping sources. Clinical data were collected from medical records and the Tasmanian Death Registry, with area-level rurality and socioeconomic status geocoded to participants' residential address.

From a cohort of 237 (70% women, 36% disadvantaged, 38% rural) individuals over a 5-year period, 12-month mortality was 52.3% with 54.0% of these deaths occurring within 24 h post ictus. In univariable analysis of 12-month survival, outcome was not influenced by socioeconomic status but rural geographical location was associated with a non-significant increase in death (HR 1.22 95% CI 0.85-1.75) along with hypertension (HR 1.78 95% CI 1.07-2.98) and hypercholesterolemia (HR 1.70 95% CI 0.99-2.
