The two effects further manifest in different aspects of RT distributions that can be captured by different components of the ex-Gaussian model using hierarchical Bayesian method. Together, these results provide behavioral evidence and a novel model for two dissociable cognitive mechanisms underlying the effects of simple muscle exertion on the ongoing visual search process on a moment-by-moment basis. The aims of this study was to assess the effect of using a four chamber versus a three plane model on speckle tracking derived global longitudinal strain, the effects of drift compensation, the effect of assessing strain in different layers and finally the interplay between these aspects for the assessment of strain in neonates. Speckle tracking derived longitudinal strain was obtained from 22 healthy neonates. ANOVA, Bland-Altman analyses, coefficients of variation and assessment of intraclass correlation coefficients were conducted to assess the effect of the abovementioned aspects as well as assess both inter-observer and intra-observer variability. Neither the use of the three plane model versus the four chamber model nor the use of drift compensation had a substantial effect on global longitudinal strain (less than 1%, depending on which layer was being assessed). A gradient was seen with increasing strain from the epicardial to endocardial layers, similar to what is seen in older subjects. Finally, drift compensation introduced more discrepancy in segmental strain values compared to global longitudinal strain. Global longitudinal strain in healthy neonates remains reasonably consistent regardless of whether the three plane or four chamber model is used and whether drift compensation is applied. Its value increases when one moves from the endocardial to the epicardial layer. Finally, drift compensation introduces more discrepancy for regional measures of longitudinal strain compared to global longitudinal strain.A 67-year-old female patient was admitted due to "coughing and chest tightness" for more than 7 months. She had recurring chest tightness and shortness of breath after activities for more than 3 months, which worsened in the past 1 month. More than 7 months ago, the patient had a severe cough with a small amount of white sputum and chest tightness and discomfort, and visited a local hospital. The heart color Doppler ultrasound and other examinations were checked, and she was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary artery CTA (CT angiography) showed the shadow of an intraluminal filling defect in the proximal main pulmonary artery. Therefore, a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism was made, with proximal tortuous stenosis of the left main pulmonary artery and distal expansion, which were considered to be congenital malformations.Implantable cardioverter defibrillators are implanted on a large scale in patients with heart failure (HF) for the prevention of sudden cardiac death. There are different scenarios in which defibrillator therapy is no longer desired or indicated, and this is occurring increasingly in elderly patients. Usually device therapy is continued until the device has reached battery depletion. At that time, the decision needs to be made to either replace it or to downgrade to a pacing-only device. This decision is dependent on many factors, including the vitality of the patient and his/her preferences, but may also be influenced by changes in recommendations in guidelines. In the last few years, there has been an increased awareness that discussions around these decisions are important and useful. see more Advanced care planning and shared decision-making have become important and are increasingly recognised as such. In this short review we describe six elderly patients with HF, in whose cases we discussed these issues, and we aim to provide some scientific and ethical rationale for clinical decision-making in this context. Current guidelines advocate the discussion of end-of-life options at the time of device implantation, and physicians should realise that their choices influence patients' options in this critical phase of their illness.Bisphenol S (BPS), one of the most widely used bisphenol A substitutes, has recently received more attention because of its high detection in water and potential toxicity. In the present study, the toxicity and removal of BPS in typical freshwater algae Navicula sp. were investigated under laboratory conditions and the comparative study with Chlorella vulgaris was also explored. BPS was more toxic to Navicula sp. than C. vulgaris with their 120-h EC50 values of 3.89 and 25.19 mg/L, respectively. It may be mainly ascribed to the high tolerance of C. vulgaris to BPS. For instance, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities of C. vulgaris were increased under the exposure of 20 mg BPS/L, whereas they were increased in Navicula sp. at 1 mg BPS/L. It is implied that the detoxification mechanism of C. vulgaris was activated until BPS concentration reach to 20 mg L-1. Moreover, the results had demonstrated that both algae had promoted the removal of BPS at 0.5 mg/L, but the removal could be inhibited as BPS concentration increased. Navicula sp. presented a better removal of BPS because of their higher accumulation, implying that they may be good materials for the removal of BPS. In addition, the sharp increase of BCF value at 72 h in Navicula sp. under the exposure of environmental-related BPS concentration (0.5 mg/L) may indicate a high risk of BPS to aquatic ecosystem. These findings will provide a reference for the risk assessment of BPS in natural waters.Influenza is an acute respiratory disease that seriously threatens public health. The occurrence of influenza has been proved to be related to a variety of meteorological factors. However, less attention has been paid to the effect of relative humidity (RH) on different types of influenza, especially in subtropical regions. Daily data on laboratory-confirmed influenza cases, weather variables, and air pollutants in Hefei covering the 2014-2019 period were collected. The seasonality and trend of daily influenza cases were explored by the time series seasonal decomposition method. Generalized linear model was fitted in conjunction with distributed lag nonlinear model to quantify the associations of RH with influenza A and influenza B. Subgroup analyses were conducted by sex, age (0-4, 5-17, and ≥18 years), and season (cold and warm seasons). A total of 5238 influenza cases including 2847 influenza A cases and 2391 influenza B cases were recorded. The epidemic of influenza presented a distinct seasonal pattern, and the number of daily influenza cases increased steadily since 2016. High RH was related to an increased risk of influenza A (maximum RR = 1.683, 95%CI 1.365-2.076), especially among males, females, and school-age children. Low RH was associated with an increased risk of influenza B (maximum RR = 1.252, 95%CI 1.169-1.340). The contrasting relationships of RH with influenza A and B remained significant in cold seasons. High RH and low RH were significantly associated with the increased risk of influenza A and B, respectively. The findings of our study may provide clues for proposing new effective interventions. The Gulf of California represents an important hotspot for whale shark (Rhincodon typus) aggregation. Anthropogenic activities and natural sources could expose sharks to high levels of trace elements (TEs). To determinate these levels in this endangered species, concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn (in ng/g ww) were measured in 130 whale shark skin biopsies and 44 zooplankton samples collected from two areas of the Gulf of California, Bahía de Los Angeles (BLA) and Bahía de La Paz (LAP) during 2016-2018. For biopsies, Zn exhibited highest concentrations in BLA (2016-2017, 298 ± 406; 2017-2018, 1959 ± 2545) and at LAP (in 2016-2017, 595 ± 554; in 2017-2018, 2642 ± 1261). On the other hand, Cd (BLA 2016-2017, 3 ± 3; LAP 2016-2017, 4 ± 3; BLA 2017-2018, 17 ± 14; LAP 2017-2018, 13 ± 10) and Pb (BLA 2016-2017, 7 ± 7; LAP 2016-2017, 15 ± 32; BLA 2017-2018, 69 ± 76; LAP 2017-2018, 7 ± 5) showed lowest concentrations. Significant differences in TE concentrations between sites and periods occurred. Arsenic found in shark biopsies from La Paz suggested enrichment and/or increased bioavailability in this area. Sex alone was not a significant factor in TE concentration; nevertheless, a sex-dependent difference in correlation of TE concentration and size was noted (negative in males, positive in females). This indicates feeding strategies of whale shark may be sex and size segregated. During 2017-2018, zooplankton and sharks showed enrichment in all TEs. Essential elements were not biomagnified by sharks. Lead was biomagnified through zooplankton. Strong positive correlation between selected elements indicates that Zn, Cd and Pb follow the same metabolic route in the sharks' body.Understanding the effect of acid rain to landslides is crucial for a better landslide risk assessment. This work aims to reveal the unsuspected but key role of acid rain in Panzhihua airport landslide, China. Firstly, we propose a hypothesis that acid rain may aggravate the slaking behavior of mudstone at weak interlayer and make it more fragmented, eventually further reducing its shear strength and predisposing the Panzhihua airport landslide. Subsequently, mudstone samples are subjected to slaking durability test, respectively, using water with a pH of 7 and two dilute hydrochloric acid solution with pH of 5 and 3. Slaking durability index (Idn) is adopted aiming to quantitatively evaluate the impact of acid rain on the slaking. Moreover, the mechanisms of acid rain affecting the slaking behavior of mudstone are revealed by (1) analyzing cation compositions changes in different pH slaking fluid and (2) observing micro-structure change of mudstone-chip before and after acid rain treatment. Finally, three works are conducted as evidences to prove that acid rain indeed plays a key role in the occurrence of Panzhihua airport landslide, including (1) analysis of the link between the slaking behavior of mudstone and its shear strength, (2) comparison of cations between spring water at the edge of the toe of landslide and acid rain, and (3) comparison of mineral contents of mudstone samples collected from different locations. These findings have implications for comprehensively analyzing the formation mechanism of landslide in acid rain area (such as Europe, North America, and China).

Uranium mining and processing are an ancient occupation, recognized as being grueling and accountable for injury and disease. Uranium (U) is a radioactive heavy metal used in many industrial applications. It increases the micronuclei frequencies as well as chromosomal aberration and sister chromatid exchange in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Granzyme B and perforin are stored inside the leukocytes in secretory granules. These proteins are released outside the cells by a cell-to-cell contact under specific conditions for inducing apoptosis. So, this study investigated the potential health hazards with prominence on the biological effects of radiation exposure.

A cross-sectional analytic research was conducted on Egyptian male mining field workers. Leucocytes' genotoxicity was evaluated using DNA fragmentation assay and comet assay. Furthermore, flow cytometric analysis of Granzyme B protein was done.

A significant increase in dead cells after dual acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) fluorescent staining in radiation-exposed groups was noticed compared to control groups.
