The dielectric characterization of tissue targets of microwave thermal ablation (MTA) have improved the efficacy and pre-procedural planning of treatment. In some clinical scenarios, the tissue target lies at the interface with an external layer of fat. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the dielectric contrast between fat and target tissue on the shape and size of the ablation zone. A 2.45 GHz monopole antenna is placed parallel to an interface modelled by fat and a tissue characterized by higher dielectric properties and powered at 30 and 60 W for 60 s. The performances of MTA are numerically investigated considering different interface scenarios (i.e., different widths of fat layer, shifts in the antenna alignment) and a homogeneous reference scenario. Experiments (N = 10) are conducted on ex vivo porcine tissue to validate the numerical results. Asymmetric heating patterns are obtained in the interface scenario, the ablation zone in the target tissue is two-fold to ten-fold the size of the zone in the adipose tissue, and up to four times larger than the homogenous scenario. The adipose tissue reflects the electromagnetic energy into the adjacent tissue target, reducing the heating in the opposite direction.A higher number of people increasingly uses digital games. This growing interest in games, with different objectives, justifies the investigation of some aspects and concepts involved, such as product quality (game), usability, playability, and user or player experience, topics investigated by the multidisciplinary area called Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Although the majority of users of these games are children and young people, an increasing number of older adults join technology and use different types of digital games. Several studies establish the increase in learning, socialization and exercise promotion, and cognitive and psychomotor skills improvement, all within the context of active and healthy aging. The objective of this work is to carry out a systematic literature review investigating the player experience of the elderly in digital games. The work allowed answering five research questions that were formulated. The evolution and maturity level of the research area are studied together with the research methods used. The factors that motivate adults to play were also analyzed; what are the recommended technical characteristics for games and some tools and metrics with which games are evaluated for older adults? Research gaps were detected in the area; there are not many specific studies on playability and player experience applied to the older adult, nor are there proven tools and metrics to evaluate them. Particular techniques for assessing and designing games focused on older adults are lacking, and quantitative studies that better identify the factors that affect the playability and experience of older adults in digital games.Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a common metabolic disorder worldwide. In addition to the chief feature of long-standing hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and a number of complications develop in parallel. It is believed that an adequate control of blood glucose levels can cause these complications to go into remission. This study was performed to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Eurycoma longifolia Jack (EL) in vivo. The blood-glucose-lowering activity of EL was studied in db/db mice administered crude powdered EL root (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) orally for eight weeks. At the end of the study, HbA1c, insulin, plasma lipid levels, and histopathology were performed. PF-9366 Powdered EL root showed significant antihyperglycemic activity along with the control of body weight. After eight weeks of treatment, both the blood cholesterol level and the glycogen deposit in hepatocytes were remarkably lower, whereas the secreting insulin level was elevated. An improvement in islet performance was manifested as an increase in beta-cell number and pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX1) expression. Neogenesis or formation of new islets from pancreatic duct epithelial cells seen in the EL-treated group was encouraging. This study confirms the antihyperglycemic activity of EL through PDX1-associated beta-cell expansion resulting in an enhancement of islet performance.Increasing the area of planted forests is rather important for compensation the loss of natural forests and slowing down the global warming. Forest growing stem volume (GSV) is a key indicator for monitoring and evaluating the quality of planted forest. To improve the accuracy of planted forest GSV located in south China, four L-band ALOS PALSAR-2 quad-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images were acquired from June to September with short intervals. Polarimetric characteristics (un-fused and fused) derived by the Yamaguchi decomposition from time series SAR images with different intervals were considered as independent variables for the GSV estimation. Then, the general linear model (GLM) obeyed the exponential distribution were proposed to retrieve the stand-level GSV in plantation. The results show that the un-fused power of double bounce scatters and four fused variables derived from single SAR image is highly sensitive to the GSV, and these polarimeric characteristics derived from the time series images more significantly contribute to improved estimation of GSV. Moreover, compared with the estimated GSV using the semi-exponential model, the employed GLM model with less limitations and simple algorithm has a higher saturation level (nearly to 300 m3/ha) and higher sensitivity to high forest GSV values than the semi-exponential model. Furthermore, by reducing the external disturbance with the help of time average, the accuracy of estimated GSV is improved using fused polarimeric characteristics, and the estimation accuracy of forest GSV was improved as the images increase. Using the fused polarimetric characteristics (Dbl×Vol/Odd) and the GLM, the minimum RRMSE was reduced from 33.87% from single SAR image to 24.42% from the time series SAR images. It is implied that the GLM is more suitable for polarimetric characteristics derived from the time series SAR images and has more potential to improve the planted forest GSV.To study the structure and function of the pH-regulated receptor tyrosine kinase insulin receptor-related receptor (IRR), а member of the insulin receptor family, we obtained six mouse monoclonal antibodies against the recombinant IRR ectodomain. These antibodies were characterized in experiments with exogenously expressed full-length IRR by Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, and immunocytochemistry analyses. Utilizing a previously obtained set of IRR/IR chimeras with swapped small structural domains and point amino acid substitutions, we mapped the binding sites of the obtained antibodies in IRR. Five of them showed specific binding to different IRR domains in the extracellular region, while one failed to react with the full-length receptor. Unexpectedly, we found that 4D5 antibody can activate IRR at neutral pH, and 4C2 antibody can inhibit activation of IRR by alkali. Our study is the first description of the instruments of protein nature that can regulate activity of the orphan receptor IRR and confirms that alkali-induced activation is an intrinsic property of this receptor tyrosine kinase. The eukaryotic nucleus remodels extensively during mitosis. Upon mitotic entry, the nuclear envelope breaks down and chromosomes condense into rod-shaped bodies, which are captured by the spindle apparatus and segregated during anaphase. Through telophase, chromosomes decondense and the nuclear envelope reassembles, leading to a functional interphase nucleus. While the molecular processes occurring in early mitosis are intensively investigated, our knowledge about molecular mechanisms of nuclear reassembly is rather limited. Using cell free and cellular assays, we identify the histone variant H2A.Z and its chaperone VPS72/YL1 as important factors for reassembly of a functional nucleus after mitosis. Live-cell imaging shows that siRNA-mediated downregulation of VPS72 extends the telophase in HeLa cells. In vitro, depletion of VPS72 or H2A.Z results in malformed and nonfunctional nuclei. VPS72 is part of two chromatin-remodeling complexes, SRCAP and EP400. Dissecting the mechanism of nuclear reformation using cell-free assays, we, however, show that VPS72 functions outside of the SRCAP and EP400 remodeling complexes to deposit H2A.Z, which in turn is crucial for formation of a functional nucleus.Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) present a new class of non-molecular soft materials with a unique combination of high ionic conductivity and anisotropy of physicochemical properties. Symmetrically-substituted long-chain imidazolium-based mesogenic ionic liquids exhibiting a smectic liquid crystalline phase were investigated by solid state NMR spectroscopy and computational methods. The aim of the study was to reveal the correlation between cation size and structure, local dynamics, and orientational order in the layered mesophase. The obtained experimental data are consistent with the model of a rod-shaped cation with the two chains aligned in opposite directions outward from the imidazolium core. The alignment of the core plane to the phase director and the restricted conformations of the chain segments were determined and compared to those in single-chain counterparts. The orientational order parameter S~0.5-0.6 of double-chain ionic liquid crystals is higher than that of corresponding single-chain analogues. This is compatible with the enhanced contribution of van der Waals forces to the stabilization of smectic layers. Increased orientational order for the material with Br- counterions, which exhibit a smaller ionic radius and higher ability to form hydrogen bonds as compared to that of BF4-, also indicated a non-negligible influence of electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The enhanced rod-shape character and higher orientational order of symmetrically-substituted ILCs can offer additional opportunities in the design of self-assembling non-molecular materials.Monocytes are considered to play a central role in the pathogenesis of Cryptococcus neoformans infection. Monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages and dendritic cells are key components for the control of infection, but paradoxically they can also contribute to detrimental host responses and may even support fungal proliferation and dissemination. Simultaneously, the C. neoformans polysaccharide capsule can impair the functions of monocytes. Although monocytes are often seen as simple precursor cells, they also function as independent immune effector cells. In this review, we summarize these monocyte-specific functions during cryptococcal infection and the influence of C. neoformans on monocyte responses. We also cover the most recent findings on the functional and phenotypic heterogeneity of monocytes and discuss how new advanced technologies provide a platform to address outstanding questions in the field.Carotenoids are well-known antioxidants. They have the ability to quench singlet oxygen and scavenge toxic free radicals preventing or reducing damage to living cells. We have found that carotenoids exhibit scavenging ability towards free radicals that increases nearly exponentially with increasing the carotenoid oxidation potential. With the oxidation potential being an important parameter in predicting antioxidant activity, we focus here on the different factors affecting it. This paper examines how the chain length and donor/acceptor substituents of carotenoids affect their oxidation potentials but, most importantly, presents the recent progress on the effect of polarity of the environment and orientation of the carotenoids on the oxidation potential in supramolecular complexes. The oxidation potential of a carotenoid in a nonpolar environment was found to be higher than in a polar environment. Moreover, in order to increase the photostability of the carotenoids in supramolecular complexes, a nonpolar environment is desired and the formation of hydrogen bonds should be avoided.
