Hungarian Caucasian population has a CLRA.During the year 2019, research and case reports/series in the field of cystic fibrosis (CF) were in abundance. To adequately address the large body of CF research published during 2019, the CF year in review will be divided into three sections. This report is the first section, focusing specifically on new research related to cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator modulator therapy. Additional sections will concentrate on pulmonary and infections research and the multisystem effects of CF. It is an exciting time to be providing care for patients and their families with CF with all the exciting new discoveries that will be shared in these reviews.

The purpose of the present study was to establish a semi-automated threshold-based image segmentation algorithm to detect and objectively quantify corneal cystine crystal deposition in ocular cystinosis with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

This prospective, observational, comparative study included 88 eyes of 45 patients from the German Cystinosis Registry Study as well as 68 eyes of 35 healthy control subjects. All eyes were imaged with AS-OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT 5000, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). As an initial step, B-scan images were subjectively analysed for typical changes in morphology in comparison to healthy controls. Based on the experience gained, an objective semi-automated B-scan image segmentation algorithm was developed using a grey scale value-based threshold method to automatically quantify corneal crystals.

On AS-OCT B-scans, corneal crystals appeared as hyperreflective deposits within the corneal stroma. The crystals were distributed either in all stromal layers (43 eyes, 49%) or confined to the anterior (23 eyes, 26%) or posterior stroma (22 eyes, 25%), respectively. The novel automatic B-scan image segmentation algorithm was most efficient in delineating corneal crystals at higher grey scale thresholds (e.g. 226 of a maximum of 255). Significant differences in suprathreshold grey scale pixels were observable between cystinosis patients and healthy controls (p<0.001). In addition, the algorithm was able to detect an age-dependent depth distribution profile of crystal deposition.

Objective quantification of corneal cystine crystal deposition is feasible with AS-OCT and can serve as a novel biomarker for ocular disease control and topical treatment monitoring.

The poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) at 60/40 (wt/wt) with a bi-continuous structure is selected as the model melt blend, and the PMMA/epoxy JNS is synthesized and used as the compatibilizer. The JNS is preferentially located at the interface. The interfacial coverage by the JNS reaches a saturated state forming the interconnected jamming structure at 0.5 wt% of the JNS. The interface is thus stabilized which is well preserved after annealing at high temperature. After selectively etching PLLA, the robust PVDF porous material is derived with the JNS armored at the pore skeleton surface. The porous material provides a universal scaffold to achieve stable functional materials after filling the pores.Cardiovascular devices have been widely applied in the clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, poor hemocompatibility and slow endothelialization on their surface still exist. Numerous surface engineering strategies have mainly sought to modify the device surface through physical, chemical, and biological approaches to improve surface hemocompatibility and endothelialization. The alteration of physical characteristics and pattern topographies brings some hopeful outcomes and plays a notable role in this respect. The chemical and biological approaches can provide potential signs of success in the endothelialization of vascular device surfaces. They usually involve therapeutic drugs, specific peptides, adhesive proteins, antibodies, growth factors and nitric oxide (NO) donors. The gene engineering can enhance the proliferation, growth, and migration of vascular cells, thus boosting the endothelialization. In this review, the surface engineering strategies are highlighted and summarized to improve hemocompatibility and rapid endothelialization on the cardiovascular devices. The potential outlook is also briefly discussed to help guide endothelialization strategies and inspire further innovations. It is hoped that this review can assist with the surface engineering of cardiovascular devices and promote future advancements in this emerging research field.

A reliable reading test provides a standardized measure of the visual component of reading performance. This study evaluated reproducibility, agreement and feasibility of five Dutch language continuous text reading tests used in clinical practice and research in visually impaired participants.

In 42 participants with macular pathologies (mean age 77years), the Colenbrander Reading Card (Colenbrander), International Reading Speed Texts (IReST), Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology (LEO) charts, 'de Nederlanders' (NED) and the Radner Reading Charts (Radner) were evaluated. The coefficient of repeatability was calculated for different reading parameters, and agreement between the reading tests was determined.

Between the reading tests, the differences found in repeatability for reading performance were mainly within the limit of one line (0.1 logMAR). Exceptions were the inter-session repeatability for critical print size Colenbrander (0.35 logMAR), LEO (0.34), Radner (0.23). The highest agreement was ility and reliability of the reading test. ORY-1001 manufacturer The NED (a historical test) was the least feasible, and it is recommend that this test is no longer used. To allow standardized and comparable analysis of reading performance a highly standardized reading test, like the Radner is recommended.
