The hippocampus encodes spatial and contextual information involved in memory and learning. The incorporation of new neurons into hippocampal networks increases neuroplasticity and enhances hippocampal-dependent learning performances. Only few studies have described hippocampal abnormalities after spinal cord injury (SCI) although cognitive deficits related to hippocampal function have been reported in rodents and even humans. The aim of this study was to characterize in further detail hippocampal changes in the acute and chronic SCI. Our data suggested that neurogenesis reduction in the acute phase after SCI could be due to enhanced death of amplifying neural progenitors (ANPs). In addition, astrocytes became reactive and microglial cells increased their number in almost all hippocampal regions studied. Glial changes resulted in a non-inflammatory response as the mRNAs of the major pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNFα, IL-18) remained unaltered, but CD200R mRNA levels were downregulated. Long-term after SCI, astrocytes remained reactive but on the other hand, microglial cell density decreased. Also, glial cells induced a neuroinflammatory environment with the upregulation of IL-1β, TNFα and IL-18 mRNA expression and the decrease of CD200R mRNA. Patients and methods Review of our prospectively collected database [Cancer Information Systems (CAISIS)] identified two hundred and fifteen (215) patients, aged > 70, who underwent RARP for localized prostate cancer between July 2003 and August 2017. A propensity score-matched analysis, with multiple covariates, was performed to stratify the patients into Age ≤ 70 and Age > 70 comparison groups. To accurately localise the nest at the end of a foraging journey, visual cues, wind direction and also olfactory cues need to be learnt. Learning walks are performed at the start of an ant's foraging career or when the appearance of the nest surrounding has changed. We investigated here whether the structure of such learning walks in the desert ant Cataglyphis fortis takes into account wind direction in conjunction with the learning of new visual information. Ants learnt to travel back and forth between their nest and a feeder, and we then introduced a black cylinder near their nest to induce learning walks in regular foragers. By doing this across days with different wind directions, we were able to probe how ants balance different sensory modalities. We found that (1) the ants' outwards headings are influenced by the wind direction with their routes deflected such that they will arrive downwind of their target, (2) a novel object along the route induces learning walks in experienced ants and (3) the structure of learning walks is shaped by the wind direction rather than the position of the visual cue.Purpose The hallmark of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is the presence of bilateral vestibular schwannomas (VS) which however have not yet developed or grown to large size in children and young adolescents. Therefore, early diagnosis in pediatric patients without family history of NF2 has to be made by signs and symptoms not related to VS which will be reviewed in this study. Methods A total of 70 children diagnosed for NF2 at an age of less then 18 years were identified from our patient cohort. Age and symptoms, signs and pathology at symptom onset, age at NF2 diagnosis and symptoms leading to diagnosis as well as genetic findings were retrospectively reviewed. Results The average age at symptom/sign onset was 8 ± 6 (range 0-17) years and 11 ± 5 (range 1-17) years at time of diagnosis. Fifteen children had a positive family history and were diagnosed upon additional clinical symptoms. The most frequent first presenting symptom/signs were ophthalmological abnormalities (49%), followed by cutaneous features (40%), non-VS-related neurological deficits (33%), and symptoms attributable to VS (21%). VS were not only the most common symptomatic neoplasm but also the most frequent pathological evidence for the diagnosis (72%). In 42 patients with available genetic testing results, pathogenic mutations were most frequently identified (n = 27). Conclusion The presenting symptoms in NF2 children appear "unspecific" or less specific for classical NF2 compared with adult NF2 patients, posing a challenge particularly for cases without family history. In children, ophthalmological and cutaneous features should raise clinical suspicion for NF2 and referral to an NF2 specialized center is recommended.Background COVID-19 infection may cause severe respiratory distress and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Impaired cardiac function and/or pre-existing cardiovascular disease may be associated with poor prognosis. In the present study, we report a comprehensive cardiovascular characterization in the first consecutive collective of patients that was admitted and treated at the University Hospital of Tübingen, Germany. Methods 123 consecutive patients with COVID-19 were included. Routine blood sampling, transthoracic echocardiography and electrocardiography were performed at hospital admission. Results We found that impaired left-ventricular and right-ventricular function as well as tricuspid regurgitation > grade 1 were significantly associated with higher mortality. Furthermore, elevated levels of myocardial distress markers (troponin-I and NT pro-BNP) were associated with poor prognosis in this patient collective. Conclusion Impaired cardiac function is associated with poor prognosis in COVID-19 positive patients. Consequently, treatment of these patients should include careful guideline-conform cardiovascular evaluation and treatment. Thus, formation of a competent Cardio-COVID-19 team may represent a major clinical measure to optimize therapy of cardiovascular patients during this pandemic.Background Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a successful procedure in managing end-stage arthritis when non-operative treatments fail. New technologies such as robotic TKA (rTKA) have been developed to improve the accuracy of prosthesis implantation. While short-term cohort studies on rTKA have shown excellent results, the evidence comparing between rTKA and conventional TKA (cTKA) is not yet well established. This meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy and safety of rTKA versus cTKA in terms of clinical outcomes, radiographic results, complications, peri-operative parameters and costs. Methods A multi-database search was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. Data from studies comparing between rTKA and cTKA were extracted and analyzed. Results Eighteen studies were included in this review, consisting of 2234 rTKA and 4300 cTKA. Robotic TKA led to a more precise prosthesis implantation with significantly fewer outliers in the mechanical axis (p less then 0.001), femoral coronal (p = 0.002) and tibial sagittal (p = 0.01) alignments. Only the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) (p less then 0.001) score at final follow-up was significantly better in rTKA than cTKA. rTKA also had a lower mean blood loss (p less then 0.001) despite a longer mean operation time (p = 0.006). There were no statistically significant difference in terms of other clinical outcome measures, range of motion and complications. Conclusion Both rTKA and cTKA are reliable and safe to perform. However, rTKA is capable of achieving superior alignment in several axes, lower mean blood loss and this may lead to marginally better clinical outcomes than cTKA. In addition, the cancer risk of gamma radiation was assessed for swimmers. Natural gamma radiation was measured using Ion Chamber Survey Meter 451B in 22 springs throughout the province. Gamma was measured at 20 cm and 100 cm above the ground level in 15 locations of each spring. Excess lifetime cancer risk was calculated to investigate the risk of exposure to gamma radiation. The highest and lowest annual absorbed dose rate of gamma were found to be 1.17(10-3) and 1.99(10-3) Sv/y at the height of 20 cm above the ground level and 5.26(10-4) and 1.52(10-3) Sv/y at the height of 100 cm above the ground level, respectively. Excess lifetime cancer risk ranged from 4.57(10-4) to 7.76(10-4) at the height of 20 cm and from 2.06(10-4) to 5.94(10-4) at the height of 100 cm which are lower than global average of 1.45(10-3) declared by the United Nations. Although the risk level in this study is lower than the global average, protective and preventive measures should be considered by individuals and authorities in these areas to reduce the effects of gamma radiation on the health of the swimmers.
