The aim of the paper was to study the structure, magnetic properties and critical behavior of the Fe60Co12Gd4Mo3B21 alloy. The X-ray diffractometry and the Mössbauer spectroscopy studies confirmed amorphous structure. The analysis of temperature evolution of the exponent n (ΔSM = C·(Bmax)n) and the Arrott plots showed the second order phase transition in investigated material. The analysis of critical behavior was carried out in order to reveal the critical exponents and precise TC value. The ascertained critical exponents were used to determine the theoretical value of the exponent n, which corresponded well with experimental results. In order to clarify the microstructural evolution and the mechanical property of dissimilar friction stir-welded joints of ZK60 and Mg-4.6Al-1.2Sn-0.7Zn magnesium alloys, two types of arrangement with ZK60 at advancing side (AS) or retreating side (RS) were adopted. The macrostructure and the microstructure of the dissimilar welded joints were discussed, and the microhardness and the transverse tensile properties of the joints were measured. There are three stirring sub-zones with different compositions and two clear interfaces within the joints. Due to the effect of both the original grain size of base materials and the growth of recrystallized grains, in the stir zone (SZ), the grain size of ZK60 increased slightly, while the grain size of Mg-4.6Al-1.2Sn-0.7Zn decreased significantly. The dissolution of precipitates was gradually significant from RS to AS within the SZ due to the gradual increase in strain and heat. The grain refinement led to an increase in hardness, while the dissolution of precipitates resulted in a decrease in hardness. The performance of the joints obtained with ZK60 placed on the RS is slightly better than that of that on the AS. The tensile fracture of both joints occurred at the interface between SZ and the thermos-mechanical affected zone at the AS, and showed a quasi-dissociative fracture.Bridges play an increasingly more important role in modern transportation, which is why many sensors are mounted on it in order to provide safety. However, supplying reliable power to these sensors has always been a great challenge. Scavenging energy from bridge vibration to power the wireless sensors has attracted more attention in recent years. Moreover, it has been proved that the linear energy harvester cannot always work efficiently since the vibration energy of the bridge distributes over a broad frequency band. In this paper, a nonlinear energy harvester is proposed to enhance the performance of harvesting bridge vibration energy. Analyses on potential energy, restoring force, and stiffness were carried out. By adjusting the separation distance between magnets, the harvester could own a low and flat potential energy, which could help the harvester oscillate on a high-energy orbit and generate high output. For validation, corresponding experiments were carried out. The results show that the output of the optimal configuration outperforms that of the linear one. Moreover, with the increase in vehicle speed, a component of extremely low frequency is gradually enhanced, which corresponds to the motion on the high-energy orbit. This study may give an effective method of harvesting energy from bridge vibration excited by moving vehicles with different moving speeds. This study aimed to determine the effect of circulating fluidised bed bottom ash (CFB-BA) content on the mechanical properties and drying shrinkage of cement-stabilised soil. Experiments were performed to study the changes in unconfined compressive strength and expansibility of cement-stabilised soil with different CFB-BA contents and the underlying mechanisms based on microscopic properties. ASP5878 inhibitor The results show that CFB-BA can effectively increase the unconfined compressive strength of the specimen and reduce the amount of cement in the soil. When the combined content of CFB-BA and cement in the soil was 30%, the unconfined compressive strength of the specimen with C/CFB = 2 after 60 days of curing was 10.138 MPa, which is 1.4 times that of the pure cement specimen. However, the CFB-BA does not significantly improve the strength of the soil and cannot be added alone as a cementing material to the soil. Additionally, swelling tests showed that the addition of CFB-BA to cement-stabilised soil can significantly reduce the drying shrinkage. This research project provides reference values for the application of CFB-BA in cement-soil mixing piles, including compressive strength and the reduction in the shrinkage deformation of specimens.Non-oriented (NO) electrical steel sheets find their application in rotating electrical machines, ranging from generators for wind turbines to motors for the transportation sector and small motors for kitchen appliances. With the current trend of moving away from fossil fuel-based energy conversion towards an electricity-based one, these machines become more and more important and, as a consequence, the leverage effect in saving energy by improving efficiency is huge. It is already well established that different applications of an electrical machine have individual requirements for the properties of the NO electrical steel sheets, which in turn result from the microstructures and textures thereof. However, designing and producing tailor-made NO electrical steel sheet is still challenging, because the complex interdependence between processing steps, the different phenomena taking place and the resulting material properties are still not sufficiently understood. This work shows how established, as well as advanced and newly developed characterization methods, can be used to unfold these intricate connections. In this context, the respective characterization methods are explained and applied to NO electrical steel as well as to the typical processing steps. In addition, several experimental results are reviewed to show the strengths of the different methods, as well as their (dis)advantages, typical applications and obtainable data.Interstitial free steels with various grain sizes and textures were prepared by cold-rolling followed by an annealing process. The effect of grain size, crystallographic orientations and stored energy on corrosion behavior of interstitial free steel was investigated. It was found that the deformed microstructure and dislocation boundaries were consumed by recrystallizing grains during annealing. The average grain size increase ranging from 0.61 μm to 11 μm and the volume fraction of recrystallized grains was about 96% after annealing for 64 h; meanwhile, the γ fiber was the dominated recrystallized texture component. The stored energy gradually decreased due to the reduction in dislocation density by annealing. The potentiodynamic polarization and Nyquist plots show that the corrosion potential exhibits a more positive shift and depressed capacitive semicircle radius increase with rising annealing time. The 64 h annealed specimens had the biggest depressed semicircle in the Nyquist plots and the highest positive corrosion potential, which indicates the enhancement of corrosion resistance. Such an improvement of corrosion resistance is attributed to the increase in the volume fraction of the γ fiber and decrease in the stored energy.Functional ability is the basis of healthy aging. Articular cartilage degeneration is amongst the most prevalent degenerative conditions that cause adverse impacts on the quality of life; moreover, it represents a key predisposing factor to osteoarthritis (OA). Both the poor capacity of articular cartilage for self-repair and the unsatisfactory outcomes of available clinical interventions make innovative tissue engineering a promising therapeutic strategy for articular cartilage repair. Significant progress was made in this field; however, a marked heterogeneity in the applied biomaterials, biofabrication, and assessments is nowadays evident by the huge number of research studies published to date. Accordingly, this literature review assimilates the most recent advances in cell-based and cell-free tissue engineering of articular cartilage and also focuses on the assessments performed via various in vitro studies, ex vivo models, preclinical in vivo animal models, and clinical studies in order to provide a broad overview of the latest findings and clinical translation in the context of degenerated articular cartilage and OA.This paper presents an effectiveness analysis of the grinding process with the use of a new multi-layer abrasive tool. The designed abrasive tool consists of external layers with a conventional structure, whose task is to decrease the grinding wheel load and ensure high grinding volumetric efficiency. The inner layer of the grinding wheel contains a 30% addition of abrasive aggregates. The task of the inner layer is to provide lower roughness of the machined surface. The aim of the research presented in this paper was to evaluate the topography of the designed abrasive tool and to analyze the middle layer properties influencing the machined surface roughness. The differentiation of the active surface features of the abrasive tool was determined for the conventional layer and the layer with the addition of abrasive aggregates. The machining potential of the layers was also determined using the Shos parameter. The surface topography of Ti-6Al-4V alloys ground with the use of a multi-layer wheel and a conventional grinding wheel was analyzed. With the application of the bootstrap hypothesis, the set of roughness parameters differentiating the topography of ground surfaces was determined.Diabetes mellitus continues to be one of the most common diseases often associated with diabetic ulcers. Chitosan is an attractive biopolymer for wound healing due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, mucoadhesiveness, low toxicity, and hemostatic effect. A panel of hydrogels based on chitosan, collagen, and silver nanoparticels were produced to treat diabetic wounds. The antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity, swelling, rheological properties, and longitudinal sections of hydrogels were studied. The ability of the gels for wound healing was studied in CD1 mice with alloxan-induced diabetes. Application of the gels resulted in an increase in VEGF, TGF-b1, IL-1b, and TIMP1 gene expression and earlier wound closure in a comparison with control untreated wounds. All gels increased collagen deposition, hair follicle repair, and sebaceous glands formation. The results of these tests show that the obtained hydrogels have good mechanical properties and biological activity and have potential applications in the field of wound healing. However, clinical studies are required to compare the efficacy of the gels as animal models do not reproduce full diabetes pathology. The generated sp2 hybrid conjugate structure of a C atom, which resulted from the chemical reaction affected by temperature and time, is an effective six-membered ring planar structure of the final carbon fiber. This kind of hybrid conjugate structure determined the formation of the final structure and mechanical properties of carbon fiber. In this paper, the formation and evolution of sp2 hybrid conjugated structures of PAN precursor during thermal stabilization were investigated by Raman, UV-vis and 13C-NMR methods. The results indicated that with the increase of stabilization temperature, the degree of the sp2 hybrid conjugated structure of stabilized PAN fiber increases "linearly", while the content of the sp2 hybrid carbon atoms increases with "S-type". The final sp2 hybrid conjugated ring structure is mainly composed of single-ring, double-ring, triple-ring, and double-bond structures. Compared with the time factor, the temperature effect plays a decisive role in the formation of the sp2 hybrid conjugate structure.
