The findings identify nuanced racial/ethnic disparities in perceived neighborhood influences on academic achievement and raise important intervention targets to promote academic achievement among disadvantaged subgroups.

The available platforms for temporary circulatory support (TCS) have expanded to include impeller technologies in addition to the traditional approaches with centrifugal pumps and intra-aortic counterpulsation. We review the evidence for competing technologies, relative risk, and benefit of individual TCS platforms and provide a consensus opinion in the context of our institutional experience.

Trans-aortic axial flow devices (Impella) have significantly impacted the support of patients with cardiogenic shock. Despite the absence of prospective randomized data, the use of both percutaneous and surgical Impella devices is ubiquitous among heart failure centers and rapidly evolving. Extracorporeal centrifugal pumps remain the technology of last resort. Despite the increasing use of new TCS platforms, there is little empirical evidence that outcomes have been impacted. Increasingly, systems of care-rather than technology-are seen as the more important variable in the management of patients with cardiogenic shock.

Although this domain is much broader than the effect of chemotherapy alone, a lot of questions about anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity remain unknown. In this invited review, we provide insights in molecular mechanisms behind anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity and put it in a clinical framework emphasizing the need for patients to understand, detect, and treat this detrimental condition.

Among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness interventions have demonstrated improvement in depression, anxiety, and glycemic control. We assessed whether these treatment modalities have shown usefulness in adolescents with T2D or at risk for T2D.

Data are limited on the use of the abovementioned therapeutic interventions and include only adolescent girls at risk for T2D. CBT was as useful as health education sessions. At 1year, greater decreases in depression, insulin resistance, and BMI were observed in girls randomized to mindfulness compared with CBT groups. Given the positive outcome of mindfulness intervention in adults and in adolescent girls at risk for T2D, future studies should involve males at risk for T2D, and adolescents diagnosed with T2D. Longer interventions and booster meetings for maintenance should be studied.

The cells' characteristics remain more similar to muscle tissue than in cell culture. Nevertheless, no routinely used method in higher vertebrates exists. Therefore, we aimed at establishing the isolation and cultivation of single myofibers from porcine muscle. For the first time, we implemented the isolation of intact myofibers from porcine fibularis tertius muscle by enzymatic digestion and their subsequent cultivation under floating conditions. Confocal microscopy showed intact myofibrill structures in isolated myofibers. Myogenic cells were able to proliferate at their parent myofiber as shown by the increase of myonuclear number during culture. Additionally, the described method can be used to investigate myogenic cells migrated from isolated myofibers. These cells expressed myogenic markers and were able to differentiate. In the future, our method can be used for genetic manipulation of cells at myofibers, investigation of growth factors or pharmacological substances, and determination of interactions between myofibers and associated cells. Working with isolated myofibers has the potential to bridge conventional cell culture and animal experiments. Adapting the method to porcine muscle allows for application possibilities in veterinary medicine as well as in biomedical research, which cannot be addressed in rodent model systems. To compare the outcomes of Seeking Safety (SS) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) in veterans with PTSD in a specialty clinic of an urban VA medical center. Retrospective chart review of electronic medical records was conducted for 420 veterans with PTSD who received treatment with either CPT (n = 227) or SS (n = 193) in group setting. 1) treatment completion rate, 2) self-reported PTSD symptom severity measured by PTSD checklist (PCL), and 3) additional mental health services received within 12 months after treatment. Data were analyzed for the 160 who had both a pre and post PCL documented in their charts. The final analysis sample included n = 94 for CPT and n = 66 for SS veterans with a mean age of 49.71[SD = 14] years, 24 women [15%]; mean baseline PCL score was 68.41 [9]. Significantly more veterans completed SS treatment (SS, 59 [89%] than CPT, 47 [50%] (p =  less then .001). However, PCL score decreases were significantly greater for patients who completed CPT treatment than those in SS (treatment x time interaction, 9.
