Neurocognitive outcomes are frequently used as indicators of real-world functioning in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). These test results may be influenced by individual differences, such as affective dispositions. Here we investigate the relationship between positive and negative affect and neuropsychological test scores in a large, mixed-gender, population based group of participants without co-morbid substance abuse.
We assessed 129 male and female SSD patients with the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery.
The neuropsychological test scores were mainly predicted by age and gender, with small contributions from negative psychosis symptoms. There was a statistically significant relationship between Positive Affect and processing speed and between Negative Affect and verbal memory and executive function. However, the level of neurocognitive function variance explained by these affects was only 5%. Thus, the neurocognitive test resultsiables in our participants. We suggest that affective traits constitute an independent dimension that may influence well-being, coping, and real-life outcome in SSD patients directly, and not through neurocognitive function.Quorum sensing (QS) enables virulence factors in bacteria for biofilm formation and pathogenic invasion. Therefore, quorum quenching (QQ), disruption of QS circuit, becomes an alternative antimicrobial therapy. In this study, leaf extract of Gynura procumbens (GP) was used to inhibit biofilm and virulent factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The extract inhibited the biofilm production (p ≤ 0.05) in P. aeruginosa strains MZ2F and MZ4A. The minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) was recorded at 250 and 500 μg/ml while total activity was found at 288 and 144 ml/g, respectively. Moreover, a significant reduction of virulence factors (p ≤ 0.05) at sub-MBEC without affecting the growth implies the QQ action of the extract. The bioactive fractions were rich in polyphenols and tentatively identified as quercetin and myricetin (R f =0.53-0.60). Furthermore, we employed computational methods to validate our findings and their interactions with QS receptors (LasR and RhlR). Interestingly, docking studies have also shown that quercetin and myricetin are the promising anti-QS agents out of 31 GP compounds. Notably, their binding affinity ranged between -9.77 and -10.52 kcal/mol for both QS receptors, with controls ranging from -5.40 to -8.97 kcal/mol. The cytotoxic activity of the compound (at 0.1-20.0 μg/mL) on the cells was determined by Real-Time Cell Analysis (RTCA) system for 24 h. The estimation of cell cycle arrest, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and caspases-3/7/9 activity in the HeLa cells treated with the compound was done by flow cytometry and luminometric technique. DNA damage in the cells was estimated by immunofluorescence staining and the comet assay with etoposide as a positive control.
The compound had strong effect on the cells (IC
= 0.55 μg/mL) by the suppression of HeLa cells proliferation in G2/M phase of cell cycle and induction of cell death through double-stranded DNA damage and reactive oxygen species overproduction. Furthermore, we did not observe an increase in the activity of caspase-3/7/9 in the treated cells as well as a decrease in cellular mitochondrial membrane potential. Gene expression analysis revealed the overexpression of NF-Kappa-B inhibitors genes (>2-fold higher than control) in the treated cells.

To contribute to filling this gap, the current study addresses the question What are the main causes of divorce and domestic violence among Syrian refugees in Germany, and how are these two phenomena interrelated? The present study is based on 14 qualitative interviews with divorced Syrian refugee men and women in Germany, all of them are Muslim with different economic backgrounds from urban and rural areas in Syria and got divorced shortly after their arrival to Germany. The data were analyzed and coded following Mayring's guidelines for content analysis. The findings suggest that domestic violence results from conflicts of interest in marriage and divorce between Syrian refugee men and women. The present study uses the economic theory of marriage and divorce by Cary Becker to show how Syrian refugee women's "gains" of divorce in Germany exceed the "gains" of remaining married and how that leads them to divorce their husbands. In contrast, divorce is a heavy loss for Syrian refugee men. In addition, it shows how this conflict of interest results in domestic violence, by which the men resist their wives' eagerness to divorce and interpret the marital relationship according to Sharia law and Arabic traditions in order to keep their old patriarchal authority. However, this interpretation is inapplicable and criminalized by the German family legislation, and unwanted by their wives. The findings, through the example of Syrian refugees in Germany, imply that the causes of divorce and domestic violence among refugees in some regards are unique in comparison with natives and migrants. That means that we need more studies on this topic in different socio-cultural contexts.Military sexual trauma (MST; i.e., sexual harassment and/or sexual assault during one's military service) is highly prevalent among female veterans and is associated with numerous adverse health and psychosocial sequelae. When institutions fail to prevent sexual trauma from happening or respond in an unsupportive manner (i.e., institutional betrayal [IB]), MST survivors typically report more severe health-related outcomes. Although the Institutional Betrayal Questionnaire.2 (IBQ.2) was developed to assess IB, no studies have examined the factor structure or dimensionality of the IBQ.2 among MST survivors. In addition, initial research has reported differing factor structures for this measure. The present study examined the dimensionality and factor structure of the IBQ.2, and tested for differential item functioning (DIF) based on whether military sexual assault was experienced. The sample comprised 235 female veterans who reported a history of MST in an anonymous national survey. Rasch analysis suggested multidimensionality and DIF based on history of military sexual assault. Exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis suggested the IBQ.2 comprises three factors (1) Environment Leading to MST, (2) Institutional Response to MST, and (3) Institutional Belongingness following MST. Although these results suggest that the IBQ.2 is multidimensional, the three-factor model had significant issues with respect to dimensionality, item fit, and person separation and reliability. Thus, using the full IBQ.2 may be more advantageous. Further examination of the IBQ.2 is warranted to ensure optimal assessment of IB in relation to MST, irrespective of whether the MST comprised sexual harassment or sexual assault, as well as to ensure that the IBQ.2 is culturally meaningful for MST survivors.Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely used to examine the relationships between brain function and phenotypic features in neurodevelopmental disorders. Techniques such as resting-state functional connectivity (FC) have enabled the identification of the primary networks of the brain. One fMRI network, in particular, the default mode network (DMN), has been implicated in social-cognitive deficits in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attentional deficits in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Given the significant clinical and genetic overlap between ASD and ADHD, surprisingly, no reviews have compared the clinical, developmental, and genetic correlates of DMN in ASD and ADHD and here we address this knowledge gap. We find that, compared with matched controls, ASD studies show a mixed pattern of both stronger and weaker FC in the DMN and ADHD studies mostly show stronger FC. Factors such as age, intelligence quotient, medication status, and heredity affect DMN FC in both ASD and ADHD. We also note that most DMN studies make ASD versus ADHD group comparisons and fail to consider ASD+ADHD comorbidity. We conclude, by identifying areas for improvement and by discussing the importance of using transdiagnostic approaches such as the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) to fully account for the phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity and overlap of ASD and ADHD.Background The neural mechanisms of highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) are poorly understood. To shed light on the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-informed neurobiology of this condition, in this study we characterize for the first time the neurofunctional architecture of a 20-year-old individual (B.B.) with HSAM and no concurrent neurological/psychiatric or other clinical conditions. Materials and Methods Relying on t-test inferential models comparing a single observation with a control group, we processed B.B.'s resting-state fMRI signal and compared it with the neurofunctional architecture of 16 young adults with normal autobiographical memory. Specifically, we analyzed large-scale brain networks, region-to-region functional connectivity, and connectivity indices informed by graph theory. Results B.B. showed higher expression of large-scale and region-to-region connectivity, larger segregation of the pallidum and enhanced centrality of the temporal pole, orbitofrontal cortex and cerebellar lobule IX. Conclusion These findings indicate that HSAM is associated with increased expression of neural pathways that support memory encoding, retrieval, and elaboration, but also with reduced expression of patterns typically involved in information control and metacognition, the use of which would be minimized thanks to automatic and accurate memory processing.
