Identification of high-risk patients admitted to intensive care with COVID-19 may inform management strategies. The objective of this meta-analysis was to determine factors associated with mortality among adults with COVID-19 admitted to intensive care by searching databases for studies published between 1 January 2020 and 6 December 2020. Observational studies of COVID-19 adults admitted to critical care were included. Studies of mixed cohorts and intensive care cohorts restricted to a specific patient sub-group were excluded. Dichotomous variables were reported with pooled OR and 95%CI, and continuous variables with pooled standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95%CI. Fifty-eight studies (44,305 patients) were included in the review. Increasing age (SMD 0.65, 95%CI 0.53-0.77); smoking (OR 1.40, 95%CI 1.03-1.90); hypertension (OR 1.54, 95%CI 1.29-1.85); diabetes (OR 1.41, 95%CI 1.22-1.63); cardiovascular disease (OR 1.91, 95%CI 1.52-2.38); respiratory disease (OR 1.75, 95%CI 1.33-2.31); renal disease (OR 2.3itted to intensive care with COVID-19.Current U.S. immigration policies disproportionately impact Mexican-origin mixed-status families, yet few studies examine the consequences of immigration enforcement (e.g., immigration-related arrest and detention) and deportation on sibling dynamics. Given this gap, this study focuses on the experiences and changes within sibling relationships in the aftermath of parental detention and deportation. We analyzed a subsample of 20 citizen children interviews (7 sibling dyads; 2 sibling triads) from a multi-site binational study that examined the psychosocial functioning of U.S. citizen children with undocumented Mexican parents. Using inductive thematic analysis, we explored the roles and functional importance of sibling relationships before and after experiences of parents' detention and deportation. Our findings suggest that prior to detention or deportation experiences, sibling relationships were described as "normal." After these experiences, however, sibling relationships changed and developed protective adaptations, including more open communication about their experiences and the assumption of caregiving roles. In cases where deportation did not occur, there still existed the threat of future immigration-related action, which contributed to fear and an inability to share feelings and experiences among siblings. Our findings suggest that sibling relationships might serve as an important locus of stability and protection. Yet, adaptive communication may not emerge as long as the threat of apprehension, detention, and deportation exists. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in four Chinese freshwater fishes (i.e., Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (H), Aristichthys nobilis (A), Lateolabrax japonicus (L), Parabramis pekinensis (P)) were separated using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and ultrafast gas chromatography electronic-nose (uf-GC E-nose). Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to distinguish the VOCs identified from the four freshwater fishes in both raw and cooked states. Twenty compounds were identified from the spectral database of GC-IMS, including five aldehydes, eight alcohols, six ketones, and three esters. In addition, using GC E-nose, 32 compounds were isolated by the first column MTX-5, and 24 compounds were isolated by the second column MXT-1701. PCA results showed that the four fishes could be well discriminated against. The odor profiles of raw and cooked fishes were clearly different. Veliparib price This study demonstrated that specific signals provided from GC-IMS could differentiate freshwater fishes. GC-IMS and uf-GC E-nose could be developed further to distinguish aquatic products based on VOCs. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Two new methods, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and ultrafast gas chromatography electronic-nose (uf-GC E-nose), were used to analyze the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in four Chinese freshwater fishes at raw and cooked status. GC-IMS has the characteristics of fast detection speed and high sensitivity. The accuracy of the qualitative analysis of the compounds is better with GC-IMS (larger data volume, leading to a better in-depth statistical analysis). Uf-GC E-nose could provide a nondestructive, fast, relatively low cost, and trustworthy way for flavor analysis. According to the techniques, the established fingerprints of VOCs provided an additional tool for food analysis.Cancers can now be diagnosed and treated early, and the number of cancer survivors is increasing.1 In addition to survival, management of chronic diseases among cancer survivors has emerged as a major concern, because survivors experience numerous sequelae and age-related conditions.2 Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects approximately 2-4% of the general population worldwide, and a recent population-based study found that the risk of cancer was higher in psoriasis patients compared to controls.3 Conversely, one report found that the risk of psoriasis in breast cancer patients was higher than in those who were generally healthy.4 However, the incidence of psoriasis in survivors of various types of cancer has received little attention.COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on people worldwide. We conducted an international survey (n = 3646) examining the degree to which people's appraisals and coping activities around the pandemic predicted their health and well-being. We obtained subsamples from 12 countries-Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, India, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Turkey and the United States. For each, we assessed appraisals and coping strategies as well as indicators of physical and mental health and well-being. Results indicated that, despite mean-level societal differences in outcomes, the pattern of appraisals and coping strategies predicting health and well-being was consistent across countries. Use of disengagement coping (particularly behavioural disengagement and self-isolation) was associated with relatively negative outcomes. In contrast, optimistic appraisals (particularly of high accommodation-focused coping potential and the ability to meet one's physical needs), use of problem-focused coping strategies (especially problem-solving) and accommodative coping strategies (especially positive reappraisal and self-encouragement) were associated with relatively positive outcomes. Our study highlights the critical importance of considering accommodative coping in stress and coping research. It also provides important information on how people have been dealing with the pandemic, the predictors of well-being under pandemic conditions and the generality of such relations.Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was used to analyze the polymerization distribution of xylo-oligosaccharides from birchwood and beechwood xylans following hydrolysis by the xylanase (XynA) from Bacillus subtilis, which was obtained by recombinant expression and purified by Ni2+ affinity column chromatography. The hydrolysis products of birchwood and beechwood xylans were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and MALDI-TOF-MS. In the birchwood hydrolysate, the main neutral xylo-oligosaccharides were xylobiose (X2 ) and xylotriose (X3 ), and the acidic xylo-oligosaccharides (polymerization degree 4-12) were attached via a single methyl-glucuronic acid sidechain (MeG). Both X2 and X3 were identified in the beechwood xylan hydrolysate and acidic xylo-oligosaccharides (polymerization degree 4-16), which were structurally similar to those in the birchwood xylan hydrolysate. Therefore, the recombinant xylanase, XynA, has the potential to produce xylobiose (X2 ) and xylotriose (X3 ) as well as acidic xylo-oligosaccharides (MeGXn ) that would be applied in food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Xylo-oligosaccharides are a novel functional food additive, which has great potential in improving the quality of food. Xylo-oligosaccharides with methyl-glucuronic acid sidechains (MeG) are acidic xylo-oligosaccharides (MeGXn), which can be applied in the preparation of drugs for the treatment of cystitis and mucopolysaccharidosis. In this study, xylanase XynA was first obtained by gene cloning and expression and then used to hydrolyze the birchwood and beechwood xylans. The polymerization distribution of xylo-oligosaccharides generated during the enzymatic digestion was then determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Through enzyme hydrolysis, we are able to produce xylobiose and xylotriose for food additives.Systemic immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis (AL) is an incurable disorder, and the natural history is incompletely understood. In this study, we describe its natural history based on an analysis of real-world longitudinal data. All patients seen at the National Amyloidosis Centre, UK, between February 2010 and August 2019 and treated with up-front bortezomib are included. In all, 1 276 patients received the first-line treatment; 259, 85, and 32 patients received second, third, and fourth treatment lines, respectively. Among patients requiring further treatment after the first line, 77·2% started the second line within two years of the first line; 50·5%, 50·6%, 40·1% and 40·6% of patients had achieved at least very good partial response after the first, second, third and fourth treatment lines. Median overall survival (OS) from first, second, third and fourth lines was 45 months, 56 months, 37 months and not reached, respectively (P = 0·109). In summary, although relapses occur in AL amyloidosis, the outcomes and responses do not worsen with each subsequent relapse, making it attractive to design therapeutics with curative intent. This paper shares learned experiences in teletherapy (also called tele-mental-health, remote video therapy, and virtual therapy) with couples and families. It aims to enhance teletherapy practice with couples and families by providing tools for screening and coaching. The paper describes common pitfalls in teletherapy with couples and families and how to avoid or address them, describes the opportunities for added insight when engaging couples and families in teletherapy from their homes, provides concrete interventions in the form of process-focused questions which therapists can draw from, and provides case examples. The case examples and process-oriented questions focus on four areas screening, logistical coaching of technology, using the family's meeting place to learn about the family, and avoiding pitfalls. This longitudinal study examined the associations between child negative affect, parental self-efficacy (PSE), and parents' approaches to the provision of supportive socialization. It also investigated the bidirectionality between PSE, problem-focus socialization, and emotion-focus socialization across two time points separated by one year. Participants were 757 Hong Kong Chinese parents (47.4% fathers) of kindergarten children. At both time 1 and time 2, parents reported their PSE, problem-focus socialization, and emotion-focus socialization. Additionally, parents rated their child's negative affect at time 1. Results from the cross-lagged panel model revealed that, controlling for the effects of school's socioeconomic strata, child gender, parental age, and educational level, PSE at time 1 mediated the indirect links of child negative affect at time 1 with problem-focus (indirect effect β = -.02, SE = .02, p less then .05) and emotion-focus (indirect effect β = -.02, SE = .01, p less then .05) socialization at time 2 and that PSE (β = .
