The nanostructure is designed such that the plasmon resonance selectively enhances the red luminescence of NaYGdF4Yb3+, Er3+ UCNPs while leaving the green luminescence unaffected, thereby increasing the dynamic range and achievable sensitivity of the red-to-green (R/G) intensity ratio. We observed a 4-fold enhancement in the R/G ratio and also a drastic reduction in the signal uncertainty. This work advances our knowledge of the optical interaction between UCNPs and plasmonic nanostructures and also provides a foundation for improved ratiometric sensing in biomedical applications. Background There has been great interest in the use of seaweed as a functional feed ingredient for poultry in the last decade. This study aimed to assess the effects of dietary seaweed inclusion on growth performance of broiler chickens by using a systematic review and meta-analysis approach. Methods A systematic search of published research articles related to seaweed, broiler chickens, and growth performance was conducted using three online databases (Scopus, PubMed, and SciELO). Mean values, standard deviation, and sample size were extracted from each eligible study. The estimated effect size was then quantified using Hedges' g with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Data were pooled using a fixed-effect model due to the absence of heterogeneity after being pre-checked using the I 2 statistic. Results A total of six studies (nine comparisons) involving 2,257 broiler chickens were accommodated in this study. The seaweed type consisted of seaweed blend, Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Hizikia fusiformis, and Ulva lactuca. The inclusion dose ranged from 2 to 30 g/kg, while the intervention duration ranged from 21 to 42 days. No substantial heterogeneity among studies ( I 2 = 0.00%) was found for feed intake, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio. Dietary seaweed had no significant effect on feed intake (Hedges' g = 0.19; 95% CI = -0.22 to 0.60; P = 0.280). However, broiler chickens fed dietary seaweed had superior body weight gain (Hedges' g = 0.64; 95% CI = 0.22 to 1.06; P = 0.000) and preferable feed conversion ratio (Hedges' g = -0.53; 95% CI = -0.95 to -0.11; P = 0.004). Conclusions The current investigation highlights that dietary seaweed had growth-promoting potency for broiler chickens. However, more research on this issue is still required to build more comprehensive evidence. Background Auto-Brewery Syndrome (ABS), also known as Gut Fermentation Syndrome, is a rare but underdiagnosed condition. While scores of case studies of ABS are published, only one previous study examined ABS patients' demographics, health history, lifestyle factors, and diet compared to a control group of household members. Methods We designed a case-control study to identify factors that individuals with a diagnosis of ABS and those who live with them might have that differ from a larger general group. We administered a survey to 46 patients known to have a diagnosis of ABS and their household members. Here, we compare our group of survey takers to a cohort of the American Gut Project (AGP) participants (N=11,297) for the 30 questions that were identical. Results With a response rate of 88% and using Rank Sum Tests, the data demonstrate that patients with ABS and their household members are more likely than participants of the AGP to own a pet (p=.03 for cat; p=.0001 for dog), get less sleep (p=.0001), and have lesser quality of bowel movements (p=.03). In addition, the ABS group consumes more water (p=.02) and less alcohol (p=.0004), eats at home more often (p=.0056), and reports more aversion to sweets (p=.01). The most striking difference is a higher presence of non-food allergies in all five subcategories of the survey in the ABS group compared to the AGP group. Conclusion Patients with ABS and their household members show several significant differences in their lifestyle and health, diet, and medical history compared to a large group of AGP participants. These differences lead to several hypotheses about co-morbidities that warrant further research.

MASK-air® is an app that supports allergic rhinitis patients in disease control. Users register daily allergy symptoms and their impact on activities using visual analog scales (VASs). We aimed to assess the concurrent validity, reliability, and responsiveness of these daily VASs.

Daily monitoring VAS data were assessed in MASK-air® users with allergic rhinitis. Concurrent validity was assessed by correlating daily VAS values with those of the EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) VAS, the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) score, and the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Allergic Specific (WPAI-AS) Questionnaire (work and activity impairment scores). Intra-rater reliability was assessed in users providing multiple daily VASs within the same day. Test-retest reliability was tested in clinically stable users, as defined by the EQ-5D VAS, CARAT, or "VAS Work" (i.e., VAS assessing the impact of allergy on work). Responsiveness was determined in users with two consecutive measurements of EQ-5a reliable measure of symptom loads.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1093/jscr/rjab357.].Colonic leiomyomas are rare. Their clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic polyps detected on endoscopy to large symptomatic abdominopelvic masses. DNA inhibitor Imaging findings are usually non-specific, and percutaneous biopsy might help with differential diagnosis. However, radical surgery with negative margins is ultimately needed to rule out malignancy. We describe an uncommon presentation of a colonic leiomyoma mimicking a right hepatic lobe tumor on preoperative imaging. The robotic approach allowed a precise abdominal exploration with confirmation of colonic and hepatic infiltration and subsequent oncological en-block resection. Surgeons operating on hepatic tumors close to the right colic flexure should be aware of this diagnosis.Traditionally, caecal volvulus (CV) and sigmoid volvulus (SV) have been thought of as largely separate clinical entities with distinct clinical features, radiological findings and treatment strategies. We present a rare case of synchronous CV and SV. To our knowledge, this represents only the ninth such case in the literature. This posed a diagnostic challenge as the seemingly textbook features of SV, such as the classical 'coffee-bean' sign on plain abdominal X-ray, masked the simultaneous occurrence of CV which only became apparent after the patient continued to deteriorate despite the successful endoscopic decompression of the SV. The diagnosis of SV should be made cautiously, with a period of close clinical observation post-intervention and a low threshold for re-evaluation should symptoms persist or recur to ensure accurate diagnosis.Tuberculoma is a manifestation of pleural tuberculosis. Although the clinical manifestation of tuberculoma has been widely reported, the pathogenesis of this condition still remains unclear. An abnormal shadow was detected on the chest radiograph of a 44-year-old man with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis. Computed tomography revealed a well-defined, elliptical 44 mm nodule located in the right posterior thoracic cavity. Thoracoscopic surgery was performed to rule out malignant tumors. Although loose adhesions were observed throughout the thoracic cavity, a nodule was found between the visceral pleura and parietal pleura. En bloc resection was performed, and the patient was pathologically diagnosed with tuberculoma. An acid-fast bacterium culture was negative, and the patient's recovery was uneventful without chemotherapy. Surgical resection should be considered to rule out malignancy, because tuberculomas are difficult to distinguish from malignant pleural tumors.Obturator hernia is a rare and diagnostically challenging type of pelvic hernia with associated high morbidity and mortality. It is frequently seen in frail, elderly female multiparous patients with non-specific symptoms and signs that may be clouded by multiple gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal comorbidities. This report discusses the case of an 84-year-old woman with refractory groin pain and previous laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair that was misdiagnosed leading to a delayed diagnosis and mortality. Previous laparoscopic repair was a misleading factor that hoodwinked clinicians and surgeons until computed tomography (CT) imaging proved otherwise. In emaciated, elderly female patients presenting with non-specific abdominal or hip pain, early CT imaging can assist in diagnosis when signs or symptoms are unclear. Clinical vigilance and serial examination are important in elderly patients who are often under the care of geriatricians allowing early discovery and treatment of this hernia. The patient was an 82-year-old woman with a diagnosis of lumbar radiculopathy due to foraminal stenosis accompanied by ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF). Computed tomography scans of the lumbar spine revealed ossification in the capsular portion of the ligamentum flavum around the L2-L3 facet joint. In addition, computed tomography images acquired a few months before the onset of radiculopathy had shown that the ossification site had gradually expanded to include the superior articular process. The patient's symptoms disappeared immediately after excision of the OLF. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen indicated replacement of degenerated ligamentum flavum with ossified tissue via a gradual endochondral ossification process. It is important to be aware that foraminal stenosis can in rare cases occur due to OLF, even in the lumbar spine.Cerebral mycosis is extremely rare in immunocompetent patients. A 61-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of worsening left-sided headaches and 3-week history of left-sided upper lip paraesthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enhancing lesion in the left temporal lobe. Histopathology of this lesion revealed what initially resembled a zygomycete but additional cultures obtained on further surgical debridement revealed the infection to be Aspergillus fumigatus with associated sphenoid sinus osteomyelitis. We postulate that the presentation was related to the patient's previous radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only report of such a case.Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. So far, more than 4 million people worldwide have been infected with the virus. Various manifestations of coronavirus have been reported since the pandemic began. Among them, acute abdomen is one of the manifestations of COVID-19. Some studies have reported acute pancreatitis in several patient due to COVID-19 infection. In this study, we report a rare case in whom SARS-CoV-2 caused acute severe hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis.Delayed deep mesh infection is a rare complication and the precise mechanism of its development is unknown. We report a case of delayed deep mesh infection after inguinal hernia repair. A 65-year-old man was admitted for treatment of colon cancer. He had a history of bilateral hernioplasty repaired with mesh-plugs 6 years previously. Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomographic scan showed positive findings in the right inguinal region similar to cancer. He had no complaints or findings to suspect mesh infection. Postoperative computed tomography scan over time revealed a fluid collection with inflammation. Eleven years after hernia repair, the patient presented with inflammation in the right inguinal region and emergency operation was performed. An abscess cavity was found and the mesh-plug covered with granulation tissue was removed. The patient remains free of recurrence of inguinal hernia or inflammatory changes after 3 years of follow-up.
