To evidence it, a simulative bloom-occurring system of Karenia mikimotoi was set up, and the sentinel organisms of rotifer Brachionus plicatilis in sea surface and blue mussel Mytilus edulis on the benthos were respectively included. The organisms' physiological responses were determined as the indicators to reflect the ecological impacts when clay settled from surface to the bottom during the mimic bloom-mitigating process. Modified clay at a concentration of 0.1 g/L effectively removed the K. mikimotoi at an 81% removal rate, and its addition would not significantly strengthen the negative impacts on population dynamics and reproductive activities of B. plicatilis induced by sole K. mikimotoi within the first 2 h. Even an alleviation was observed at 2 d indicated by the increase of survival rate, egg and larva production after clay addition compared with those of 2 h. When the clay particles settled to benthos, the physical damage to the gills and digestive glands of M. edulis were found via the tissue and SEM observation, especially in higher treatment groups of 0.5 and 1.0 g/L, and filtering rate, digestive enzymes, condition index, water content and mortality were also influenced. However, little impact was found in group of 0.1 g/L. Risk assessment based on the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) model further revealed that the complete key event-key event relationship-adverse outcome pathway was only clearly observed in 0.5 g/L and 1 g/L groups but not in 0.1 g/L group, inferring the small ecological risk of 0.1 g/L. The integrated biomarker response (IBR) based on the mussel's physiological responses further backed up the AOP outcoming. Lichenicidin is a class II two-peptide lantibiotic. The presence of the two mature peptides, Bliα and Bliβ, is necessary for full activity against target bacteria. This work aims at clarifying the synergistic activity of both peptides in their interaction with the target membranes. The effect of lichenicidin was tested against S. aureus cells and large unilamellar vesicles. Lichenicidin increases the net surface charge of S. aureus, as shown by zeta-potential measurements, without reaching electroneutralization. In addition, lichenicidin causes cell surface perturbations that culminate in the leakage of its internal contents, as observed by atomic force microscopy. Bliα seems to have low affinity for S. aureus, however, it contributes to increase the affinity of Bliβ, because together they present higher affinity than separately. In contrast, Bliα seems to provide an anchoring site for lichenicidin in lipid II-containing membranes. Interestingly, Bliβ alone can induce high levels of membrane leakage, but this effect appears to be faster in the presence of Bliα. Data on management of severe intrapartum hypertension is lacking. The aim of this study is to explore the proportion of timely interventions in severe, persistent intrapartum hypertension treatment by exploring the prevalence and management of intrapartum hypertension trends.

This was a retrospective case-control study of pregnant women who delivered at the University of Chicago between January 2015 and March 2017. Patients with severe preeclampsia who underwent labor (either induced or spontaneous) were stratified into two groups severe intrapartum hypertension and no severe intrapartum hypertension.

Type of treatment and timing to treatment of severe hypertensive episodes were explored as well as prevalence of maternal adverse outcomes.

A total of 95 patients with severe preeclampsia in labor were identified. In patients with persistent severe intrapartum hypertension (n=52), 15 (28.9%) received treatment. Patients experiencing greater than three episodes of blood pressure elevation were more likely to receive treatment as compared to those with fewer episodes. There was no significant difference in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) between those treated within 60min compared to those untreated or treated after 60min (16.7% vs 27.5%; p=0.71).

Preeclamptic pregnancies are associated with elevated inflammation, and inhibition of inflammation attenuates endothelial damage in animal models of preeclampsia. However, it is unclear if inhibition of vascular inflammation improves endothelial function in women after a preeclamptic pregnancy. Using the cutaneous microcirculation as a model, we hypothesized that acute systemic inhibition of vascular inflammation (oral salsalate; 1500 mg/twice daily, 4 days) would improve endothelium- and NO-dependent vasodilation in women with a history of preeclampsia (PE) but not in women with a history of uncomplicated pregnancy (HC). Twelve HC (30 ± 1yrs, 10 ± 2 months postpartum) and 10 PE (30 ± 2yrs, 8 ± 2 months postpartum) participated in a double-blind placebo-controlled study. Following each treatment, 2 intradermal microdialysis fibers were placed in the skin of the ventral forearm for graded infusion of acetylcholine (Ach, 10-7-102mM) or Ach + 15 mM L-NAME (NO synthase antagonist).
