Anti-NDV activity study was done in embryonated chicken eggs (ECEs). Treatment of NDV inoculated ECEs with 3β-Friedelanol (1) reduced the viral load to zero and maintained the survival of embryos, this was revealed by continuous organs formation and increase in embryo weights with no significant different (p > 0.05) from un-inoculated ECE. These effects suggest that, 3β-Friedelanol (1) possesses anti-NDV activity. Therefore, existence of 3β-Friedelanol (1) in the leaves of S. glaucescens may justify its earlier described anti-NDV activity and traditional use in the treatment of ND. Hence, its leaves extract may be considered for development of anti-NDV herbal formulation while 3β-Friedelanol could either serve as a drug or lead compound for synthesis of anti-NDV drugs.Conventional culture method and biochemical tests remain as the 'gold standard' method for the identification of S. sonnei which are time-consuming. We have discovered previously the potential of three OMPs of S. sonnei (33.3 kDa, 43.8 kDa and 100.3 kDa) as biomarkers in the diagnostic test for shigellosis. Here, we evaluated the performance of the outer membrane proteins of S. sonnei for the development of an antibody-based immunoassay for the detection of S. sonnei infections. All threetarget proteins were specifically recognized when probed with S. sonnei sera. In addition, another two potential proteins of molecular weight 29.0 kDa and 88.2 kDa in size were also exclusively recognized by the IgA when probed with S. sonnei sera. The optimized ELISA demonstrated higher sensitivity and specificity which exceeded 86.0%. This retrospective cohort study was conducted at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. Researchers collected demographics, comorbidity, initial laboratory tests, and complications data of patients. This study performed a comparative, survival, and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Survival analysis showed a decrease in the probability of survival associated with an increase in the variables of age, diabetes, white blood cell (WBC) count, and neutrophils percentage, and a decrease in lymphocytes percentage during hospitalization. Lymphocyte percentage, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), WBC count, neutrophil percentage, had an accuracy 0.727 (95%CI 0.642-0.812; p less then 0.001), 0.726 (95%CI 0.641-0.812; p less then 0.001), 0.706 (95%CI 0.615-0.796; p less then 0.001), and 0.700 (95%CI 0.612-0.788; p less then 0.001) respectively, in predicting worse outcome. Our study suggests routine complete blood count tests in the admission of a patient with COVID-19 infections, which can be used to determine the survival and prognosis of hospitalized patients.Simulium (Gomphostilbia) ogatai (Rubtsov) from Japan, the only Palaearctic species in the S. ceylonicum species-group, is morphologically revised. Its female is described for the first time and its male and pupa are redescribed based on specimens from Gifu, Honshu. It is characterized in the female and male by the base of the radius with a tuft of yellow hairs, in the female by the head slightly wider than the thorax, 5.89 times as wide as the greatest width of the frons, and short sensory vesicle 0.21-0.24 times as long as the third palpal segment; in the male by the number of upper-eye (large) facets in 15 vertical columns and 16 horizontal rows, and hind basitarsus spindle-shaped, enlarged, 3.79 times as long as wide, and 0.83 and 1.00 times as wide as the greatest width of the hind tibia and femur, respectively; and in the pupa by the terminal hooks simple and cone-like, and the cocoon with an anterodorsal projection. Taxonomic notes for this species are given relevant to several related species in the Oriental Region, and its assignment to the S. ceylonicum species-group is confirmed.Chrysomya megacephala larvae can easily be identified using cheap traditional microscopy techniques. Nevertheless, identification using taxonomy keys may be hampered, if the morphological characteristics of the larvae are incomplete, or immature for microscopic identification. To overcome the difficulty of species determination, molecular identification has gained relevance and is applied in forensic investigations. This study aimed to identify a novel target gene, known as the gustatory receptor 1 gene (CmegGr1), which has never been used for identification. The third instar larvae of Ch. megacephala (n = 30) and eight other forensically important fly species were obtained from two sources; rabbit carcasses and the Forensic Entomology Unit collection. Their DNAs were extracted and the CmegGr1 gene was amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The resulting sequences were subjected to phylogenetic analysis. A 209 bp fragment of the CmegGr1 gene was successfully amplified in 80% (24/30) of Ch. megacephala samples, while all of the non-Ch. megacephala species were not amplified. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the evolutionary tree of CmegGr1 shares many traits with the 21a gustatory receptors of Calliphora stygia and Lucilia cuprina (Gr21a), which are also classified as necrophagous fly species. The high specificity of species identification was demonstrated in the present study using DNA barcoding, which led to the conclusion that the CmegGr1 gene could serve as an alternative marker for identifying Ch. megacephala.This study was conducted to investigate rickettsial seropositivity among hunters, a high-risk population for tick-borne diseases in northern Cyprus. Serum samples were collected from 300 hunters from different locations during the 2017-2018 hunting season (November 2017 - February 2018). The samples were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using slides coated with Rickettsia slovaca, a species belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG). During the sample collection, a questionnaire was also applied to evaluate possible risk factors for rickettsial seropositivity. Of the 300 serum samples, six (2.0%) were found to be IgG-positive with a titer of 164. While all seropositive individuals were male, the statistical analysis revealed no significant association of gender with rickettsial seropositivity (p=1.000). To our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates rickettsial seropositivity among human population in northern Cyprus. Further serological studies using other Rickettsia spp. antigens, as well as molecular studies that search for Rickettsia spp. in humans, animals and arthropods are needed to obtain more comprehensive data on rickettsiosis in northern Cyprus.Among strategies for decreasing diseases, the use of larvicidal plant extracts against mosquito larvae gain an important place in vector control. The aim of the present study was to reveal the insecticidal effectiveness of an endemic medicinal plant on Mosquito-Borne Diseases. The chemical composition of the dried aerial part from Origanum floribundum Essential oil, obtained by hydrodistillation, was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) system. The potential larvicidal activity of this extract as bioinsecticide was assessed against Culex pipiens. Results showed many functional groups such as phenols and alcohols, besides, the chemical composition by GC-MS identified thymol (86.9%) and p-Cymene (5.1%) as major components. A significant larvicidal effect against the target mosquito species was noted, with values of LC50 at 21.19 mg/l and LC90 at 68.37 mg/l. The results obtained showed that the essential oil of Origanum floribundum with chemotype thymol possess a potent larvicidal activity and could be considered as an eco-friendly alternative for vector control.Circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is a sporozoite major surface protein of Plasmodium species. The protein showed promising protection level as a vaccine candidate against Plasmodium falciparum infection. There is a lack of studies on P. knowlesi CSP (PkCSP) as a vaccine candidate due to the high polymorphic characteristic of central repeat region. Recent studies showed the protein has a relatively conserved region at the C-terminal, which consists of T- and B-cell epitopes. This could be the target region for vaccine development against the pre-erythrocytic stage of the parasite. In this study, recombinant PkCSP was expressed using Escherichia coli system. Recombinant PkCSP was immunized in animal models and the antiserum was evaluated using immunoblot analysis. Results showed that PkCSP can be successfully expressed using the bacterial system. Endpoint titre of the antiserum were ranged up to 1819200. Immunoblot analysis showed the antiserum recognized recombinant PkCSP but not total protein extract from P. knowlesi erythrocytic stage. In conclusion, PkCSP could elicit strong immune response in animal models. However, serum antibodies could not recognize protein from the parasite's erythrocytic stage extract indicating it is not expressed at the erythrocytic stage. Therefore, PkCSP remains as a potential pre-erythrocytic vaccine candidate against P. knowlesi infection.The community that progressively colonizes a decaying corpse can be considered a small ecosystem mostly composed of sarcosaprophagous arthropods belonging to the orders Diptera and Coleoptera. Studies on these species are often performed through animal models to obtain data on their succession, behaviour and life cycle, together with information on habitat, corpse conditions, season and association with other species. These data may be relevant for forensic investigations, especially concerning the estimation of Post Mortem Interval (PMI). An investigation on the sarcosaprophagous insect community in a rural area was set in Calabria (Southern Italy), using a pig, Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758 (Artiodactyla Suidae) as experimental model. Analyses of the community of Diptera and Coleoptera revealed the massive presence of Necrodes littoralis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera Silphidae). Adults of this species reached the carcass during the bloated stage and a large amount of larvae was detected from the decay stage onwards, simultaneous to the sharp decrease in dipteran larvae and pupae.
