Moreover, treatment of different cell lines with these two extracts exhibited no or little cytotoxic effects. Thus, these two agents have the potential to be good therapeutic agents against mycobacterial diseases.The potential of the culturable bacterial community from an Alpine coniferous forest site for the degradation of organic polymers and pollutants at low (5 °C) and moderate (20 °C) temperatures was evaluated. The majority of the 68 strains belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria (77%). Other strains were related to Bacteroidetes (12%), Alphaproteobacteria (4%), Actinobacteria (3%), and Firmicutes (3%). The strains were grouped into 42 different OTUs. The highest bacterial diversity was found within the phylum Bacteroidetes. All strains, except one, could grow at temperatures from 5 to 25 °C. The production of enzyme activities involved in the degradation of organic polymers present in plant litter (carboxymethyl cellulose, microgranular cellulose, xylan, polygalacturonic acid) was almost comparable at 5 °C (68%) and 20 °C (63%). Utilizers of lignin compounds (lignosulfonic acid, lignin alkali) as sole carbon source were found to a higher extent at 20 °C (57%) than at 5 °C (24%), but the relative fractions among positively tested strains utilizing these compounds were almost identical at the two temperatures. Similar results were noted for utilizers of organic pollutants (n-hexadecane, diesel oil, phenol, glyphosate) as sole carbon source. More than two-thirds showed constitutively expressed catechol-1,2-dioxygenase activity both at 5 °C (74%) and 20 °C (66%). Complete phenol (2.5 mmol/L) degradation by strain Paraburkholderia aromaticivorans AR20-38 was demonstrated at 0-30 °C, amounts up to 7.5 mmol/L phenol were fully degraded at 10-30 °C. These results are useful to better understand the effect of changing temperatures on microorganisms involved in litter degradation and nutrient turnover in Alpine forest soils.

The present study analyzed the association between (i) eating habits during pregnancy, (ii) advice from family or friends about gestational weight gain (GWG), and iii) personal effort to stay within weight gain limits, and meeting GWG recommendations.

Participants included pregnant and postpartum women who completed the validated electronic maternal health survey (EMat). Sociodemographic, lifestyle variables, and body mass index were covariates used in the analyses.

Among all eligible women (1171), and a subset of women receiving a specific GWG target from HCP (365, 31.2%), participants who considered that their eating habits became less healthy, or could not evaluate if habits changed, had a higher likelihood of gaining above (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 2.62; 95% CI 1.84; 3.73 for the total sample (TS); aOR = 4.79; CI 2.32;9.88 for the subset) GWG guidelines after adjusting for the covariates. Women who received advice from family or friends about how much weight they should gain while pregnant were more likely to experience GWG below (TS aOR = 1.49; CI 1.02;2.17; subset aOR = 1.95; CI 1.03;3.68) and above (TS aOR = 1.42; CI 1.01;1.99; subset aOR = 1.92; CI 1.06;3.48) guidelines, when compared to women who did not receive family/friends advice. Moreover, lower personal effort to stay within weight gain limits was associated with gaining below (TS aOR = 1.77; CI 1.07;2.92; subset aOR = 2.71; CI 1.30; 5.65) GWG guidelines.

Probiotics have been proven to exert beneficial effects in controlling SNE. However, their exact mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Moreover, few studies have focused on their impact on microRNAs (miRNAs). Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the miRNA expression profiles in the ileum of broiler chickens during probiotic supplementation for controlling SNE. A total of 180 newly hatched male broilers were randomly allocated into three groups, including a negative control group, an SNE infection group, and a Bacillus licheniformis H2 pretreatment group. Illumina high-throughput sequencing was conducted to identify the miRNA expression of the three groups. Results showed that 628 miRNAs, including 582 known miRNAs and 46 novel miRNAs, were detected in the miRNA libraries. The target genes of 57 significantly differentially expressed miRNAs were predicted and annotated. Moreover, they were found to be partly enriched in pathways related to immunity and inflammation such as tumor necrosis factor receptor binding, immune response-regulating signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor 2 signaling pathway, interleukin-15 production, activation of NF-κB-inducing kinase activity, and MAP kinase tyrosine/serine/threonine phosphatase activity. Some of the target genes of 57 miRNAs were related to the MAPK signaling pathway. Furthermore, the expression of several miRNAs, which may be involved in the MAPK signaling pathway, was significantly affected by SNE induction and showed no significant difference in the presence of H2. All these findings provide comprehensive miRNA expression profiles of three different treatment groups. The objective was to verify associations between positive and negative parenting practices, marital relationships, social skills, and behavioral problems among children from bi-parental families with and those without maternal depression; to identify the predictive effect of positive and negative parenting practices, marital relationships, children's social skills, and maternal depression, for internalizing, externalizing behavior problems and internalizing and externalizing comorbidities. A case-control study with a cross-sectional design was adopted to ensure the groups were homogeneous in regard to the children's, mothers', and families' sociodemographic characteristics. A total of 35 mothers currently with depression and 35 without depression indicators participated in the study, while the children were 25 preschoolers and 23 school-aged children. The mothers responded to instruments addressing depression, child behavior, parenting practices, and marital relationships. The results reveal maternal depression associated with marital relationships, positive parenting, and context variables. Maternal depression and marital relationship were found to influence externalizing problems; maternal depression, child-rearing practices, marital relationships, and the children's behavioral repertoires influence internalizing and externalizing comorbidities; and none of the independent variables influenced the occurrence of internalizing problems.Patterns of plant trait variation across spatial scales are important for understanding ecosystem functioning and services. However, habitat-related drivers of these patterns are poorly understood. In a conceptual model, we ask whether and how the patterns of within- and among-site plant trait variation are driven by habitat type (terrestrial vs. wetland) across large climatic gradients. For all 13 plant traits, within-site variation was larger than among-site variation in both terrestrial and wetland habitats. Within-site variation was similar in most leaf traits related to carbon and nutrient economics but larger in specific leaf area and size-related traits (plant height, leaf area and thickness) in wetland compared to terrestrial habitats. Among-site variation was larger in terrestrial than wetland habitats for 10 leaf traits but smaller for plant height, leaf area and leaf nitrogen. Our results indicate the important role of local ecological processes in driving plant trait variation among coexisting species and the dependence of functional variation across habitats on traits considered. Genetically engineered pigs have been discussed as a potential alternative to allogeneic donor organs. Although xenotransplantation of pig-derived organs in nonhuman primates (NHPs) has shown sequential advances in recent years, there are still underlying problems that need to be completely addressed before clinical applications, including (i) acute humoral xenograft rejection; (ii) acute cellular rejection; (iii) dysregulation of coagulation and inflammation; (iv) physiological incompatibility; and (v) cross-species infection. Moreover, various genetic modifications to the pig donor need to be fully characterized, with the aim of identifying the ideal transgene combination for upcoming clinical trials. In addition, suitable pretransplant screening methods need to be confirmed for optimal donor-recipient matching, ensuring a good outcome from xenotransplantation. Herein, we summarize the understanding of organ xenotransplantation in pigs-to-NHPs and highlight the current status and recent progress in extending the survival time of pig xenografts and recipients. In this study, Real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, and stereology were used to evaluate the gender differences and left-right asymmetries in the expression of BDNF in the developing rat hippocampus during the neurogenesis-active period, at postnatal days P0, P7 and P14. We found the lowest expression of BDNF in the right side and the highest in the left side hippocampi of both male and female neonates at P14 (P ≤ 0.05 each).
