Previous studies have shown that latex proteins from Plumeria pudica (LPPp) have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects in rats of LPPp on ligature-induced periodontitis, an inflammatory disease.

The animals were divided into groups saline (animals without induction of periodontitis), periodontitis (induced periodontitis and untreated) and LPPp (induced periodontitis and treated with 40mg/kg). The following parameters were evaluated after 20 consecutive days of treatment gingival bleeding index (GBI), probing pocket depth (PPD), alveolar bone height (ABH) and gingival myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. In the hepatic tissue, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and histopathological alterations were evaluated. Blood levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured.

Significant reduction in GBI, PPD and gingival MPO activity and ABH was seen in animals treated with LPPp compared with periodontitis. Values of GSH, MDA, ALT and histopathological evaluation were preserved in animals treated with LPPp.

Treatment with LPPp improved clinical aspects of periodontitis, reduced the blood and hepatic alterations and prevented alveolar bone loss. Data suggest that LPPp have potential for treatment of periodontitis.

Caregivers of people living with dementia play an essential role in managing medications across transitions of care. This qualitative study explores the experiences and perspectives of caregivers about the medication management guidance provided at hospital discharge.

A qualitative approach using semi-structured, telephone interviews was conducted with 31 caregivers of people with dementia across Australia. Purposive sampling was used to ensure maximum variation of diverse experiences and perspectives.

Caregivers' experiences of medication guidance for people with dementia at discharge were described in three themes including (a) inadequate information about medication management at discharge; (b) limited caregiver engagement in medication management decisions; and (c) difficulties ensuring medication supply post discharge. Most participants indicated they would like to be included in discussions at discharge. However, participation was influenced by caregivers being overwhelmed by discharge processes; proactively seeking information on medication-related harm; and belief in advocacy as part of their caregiver role. Caregivers reported they would like to receive a tailored medication list for people with dementia which included information on medications that may impact on the patient's cognition, and for hospital staff to communicate with both the community pharmacist and primary care physician, to improve co-ordination post transition.

Opportunity-based cross-sectional anonymous electronic survey in four Australian jurisdictions, conducted immediately after screening a short animated narrative film describing 'dignity of risk'. Survey comprised nine questions including respondent demographics, professional role, risk-taking and outcome.

From 24 separate screenings, there were 929 respondents. Agreement to 'help an older person with risk-taking activities' was associated with respondent prediction of the least severe harm occurring (OR=2.22 [1.20, 4.12], P=.001). Conversely, respondents in non-executive, non-managerial roles-that is, nurses and care workers-were unlikely to agree to help with risk-taking activities (OR 0.36-0.49, P≤.03). There was not an association with respondent's age grouping (P=.6).

Therefore, the distinction between these isomers is crucial for their proper profiling. Although liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry has been successfully employed for this purpose, the distinction process can still be improved, particularly regarding liquid chromatography. Recently, a reversed-phase liquid chromatography method that could separate disialoganglioside isomers was reported; however, the distinction of trisialoganglioside isomers using reversed-phase liquid chromatography has not been demonstrated. Here, we investigated the practicality of a reversed-phase liquid chromatography with an octadecylsilane column for separating polysialoganglioside isomers and successfully achieved the isomer separation of disialogangliosides and trisialogangliosides for the first time. We also confirmed several crucial factors in the mobile-phase composition, which affect the differential retention and mass spectral response of the isomers. First, an organic modifier, acetonitrile, exhibited superior selectivity against polysialogangliosides over methanol. Second, ammonium bicarbonate was the best ammonium salt additive among those tested, in terms of the separation efficiency and mass spectral response. Third, as the ammonium salt concentration increased, the negative electrospray ionization response was extensively suppressed, and the retention of gangliosides increased.
