84, specificity=0.64, PPV=0.90, NPV=0.56), based on AUC. LAR response outcome agreement for 5-0 and 4-0 stimulations was high (93%) for 5-0 positive response, but low (29%) for 5-0 negative response. Aesthesiometer test-retest reliability for LAR response outcome was excellent (Cronbach's alpha=0.97).
Threshold estimation of the LAR response may be operationalized by adopting a decision tree protocol. For negative LAR response to initial 5-0 monofilament stimulation and positive response to subsequent 4-0 monofilament stimulation, the higher threshold is confirmed. Positive LAR response to 5-0 or 4-0 monofilament stimulation is expected in over 90% of asymptomatic adults. Negative LAR response to 4-0 monofilament stimulation identifies patients at risk for laryngopharyngeal hyposensitivity.

In vitro photoprotection according to UVA-UVB absorption spectrum, Sun Protection Factor (SPF), UVA Protection Factor (UVAPF), (critical wavelength) λc and UVA/UVB Ratio were assessed. Also, the antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH radical assay and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation in methyl linoleate (MeLo). Total anthocyanins content (TAC) and total polyphenolic content (TPC) were evaluated. Among the extracts evaluated, the extract of B. antioquensis, an endemic plant of Colombia, showed a significant photoprotection against UVA-UVB range, with SPF values of 15 ± 2 and UVAPF of 7 ± 1, λc 378, UVA/UVB Ratio 0.78. Furthermore, this extract presented an excellent antioxidant activity, with EC50 of 0.17 ± 0.04 g of dry extract/mmol DPPH, a value of TPC of 464 ± 9 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry extract and significant inhibition of MeLo peroxidation. The results suggest that the extract of B. this website antioquensis has the best quality to be a source of new UV filters, with a broad spectrum of protection and antioxidant properties.A number of heterocytous, mat-forming, tapering cyanobacteria in Rivulariaceae have recently been observed in both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts in the rocky intertidal and supratidal zones. These belong to the genera Nunduva, Kyrtuthrix, and Phyllonema and have been the subject of several recent studies. Herein, two new species of Nunduva (N. komarkovae and N. sanagustinensis) and two new species of Kyrtuthrix (K. munecosensis and K. totonaca) are characterized and described from the coasts of Mexico. Genetic separation based on the 16S-23S ITS region was pronounced (>10% in all comparisons). Morphological differences between all existing species in these two genera were also observed, but the group is morphologically complex, and these taxa are considered pseudocryptic. Nunduva and Kyrtuthrix remain morphologically and phylogenetically separate even with the addition of new species. However, how long will this remain the case? Many new genera and species of cyanobacteria have recently been described. Will the taxonomy of cyanobacteria eventually become saturated? Will we start to see multiple populations for the same cryptic species, or will future taxonomists collapse multiple species into fewer species, or multiple genera into single genera. The description of even more Nunduva and Kyrtuthrix species causes us to pause and evaluate the future of cyanobacterial taxonomy. These same questions are faced by algal taxonomists studying other phyla, and the resolution may ultimately be similar. The structural changes in the tissues of the osteochondral junction are a topic of interest, especially considering how bone changes are involved in the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Our research group has previously demonstrated that at the cement line boundary between the zone of calcified cartilage (ZCC) and the subchondral bone, in mature bovine patellae with early OA, there are numerous bone spicules that have emerged from the underlying bone. These spicules contain a central vascular canal and a bone cuff. In this study, we use high-resolution differential interference contrast optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to compare the cartilage-bone junction of three groups of mature bovine patellae showing healthy to mild to moderately degenerate cartilage. The ZCC and bone junction was carefully examined to estimate the frequency of marrow spaces, bone spicules and fully formed bone bulges. The results reveal that bone spicules are associated with all grades of cartilage tissue studied, with the most occurring in the intermediate stages of tissue health. The micro and ultrastructure of the bone spicule are consistent with that of an osteon, especially those found in compression zones in long bones. Also considering the coexistence of marrow spaces and fully formed bone, this study suggests that these bone spicules arise similar to the formation of osteons in the bone remodelling process. The significance of this conclusion is in the way researchers approach the bone formation issue in the early degenerative joint. Instead of endochondral ossification, we propose that bone formation in OA is more akin to a combination of primary bone remodelling and de novo bone formation.
Impaired memory is a common comorbidity of refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and often perceived by patients as more problematic than the seizures themselves. The objective of this study is to understand what the relationship of these behavioral impairments is to the underlying pathophysiology, as there are currently no treatments for these deficits, and it remains unknown what circuits are affected.
We recorded single neurons in the medial temporal lobes (MTLs) of 62 patients (37 with refractory TLE) who performed a visual recognition memory task to characterize the relationship between behavior, tuning, and anatomical location of memory selective and visually selective neurons.
Subjects with a seizure onset zone (SOZ) in the right but not left MTL demonstrated impaired ability to recollect as indicated by the degree of asymmetry of the receiver operating characteristic curve. Of the 1973 recorded neurons, 159 were memory selective (MS) and 366 were visually selective (VS) category cells. The resit disruption by an SOZ in the MTL, and establish a neural correlate of cognitive impairment due to epilepsy that can be used as a biomarker to assess the efficacy of novel treatments.Previous research has investigated generalized intraverbal-tacting by teaching children with autism to respond using autoclitic frames. The present study compared the effectiveness and efficiency of a Frame and a No Frame procedure across counterbalanced stimulus sets with 4 children with autism. In the Frame condition, children were taught to respond using autoclitic frames (e.g., "Shape square," "Number two," "Color green," "It's mummy," "S/he is drinking") corresponding to the verbal antecedent ("What shape?", "What number?", "What color?", "Who is it?", "What is s/he doing?"). In the No Frame condition, intraverbal-tacting was established without the autoclitic frame. Irrespective of stimuli employed, 2 children acquired intraverbal-tacting only in the Frame condition. The other 2 children acquired intraverbal-tacting in both conditions, with the Frame procedure requiring fewer teaching trials for 1 child and producing greater generalization for the other. Implications for clinical practice and the role of additive intraverbal stimulus control of autoclitic frames are discussed.Elemental fingerprint, stable isotopic analysis, and chemometrics were combined to identify organic kiwifruit from ordinarily cultivated kiwifruit. Samples of organic (n1 = 78) and ordinary kiwifruit (n2 = 85) were collected from neighboring areas. For elemental fingerprint, the contents of 15 elements in fresh fruits, including Al, Cr, Mg, Pb, Zn, Ca, Cu, Mn, Se, Cd, Fe, Na, Sr, Co, and K, were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Three stable isotopes, including δ13 C, δ15 N, and δ18 O, were analyzed using an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS). Different classification methods including soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA), and least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM), were used to discriminate the organic and ordinary kiwifruits by fusion of elemental and stable isotopic. As a result, the sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of SIMCA model were 0.885, 0.857, and 0.864, respectively. PLSDA and LS-SVM obtained 0.950 and 0.983 classification accuracy of organic and ordinary kiwifruits, respectively. It was demonstrated that elemental fingerprint and stable isotopic analysis would provide useful chemical information for the identification of organic fruits, and the capacity of these methods could be enhanced by chemometrics. PRACTICAL APPLICATION The classification of kiwifruit usually relies on the label assigned by the merchant, which is prone to deceive consumers. This research has developed an accurate and effective classification method based on stable isotopes and mineral elements for the identification of ordinary kiwifruit and organic kiwifruit, providing a tool for the quality monitoring of organic food.
There have been recommendations to improve therapy discovery for epilepsy by incorporating chronic epilepsy models into the preclinical process, but unpredictable seizures and difficulties in maintaining drug levels over prolonged periods have been obstacles to using these animals. We report new protocols in which drugs are administered through a new chronic gastric tube to rats with higher seizure frequencies to minimize these obstacles.
Adult rats with spontaneous limbic seizures following an episode of limbic status epilepticus induced by electrical hippocampal stimulation were monitored with long-term video- electroencephalography (EEG). Animals with a predetermined baseline seizure frequency received an intragastric tube for drug administration. Carbamazepine, levetiracetam, phenobarbital, and phenytoin were tested with either an acute protocol (an increasing single dose every other day for a maximum of three doses) or with a chronic protocol (multiple administrations of one dose for a week). Drug lele, higher seizure frequencies made it possible to identify the potential of a drug to suppress seizures in a realistic model of epilepsy with drug levels that are similar to those of human therapeutic levels. The acute protocol provided a full dose response in 1 week. The chronic administration protocol further differentiated drugs that may be effective long term. The gastric tube facilitates a less stressful, humane, and consistent administration of multiple doses.Angiopoietin-like proteins (ANGPTLs), a family of eight secreted glycoproteins termed ANGTPL1-8, are involved in angiogenesis, lipid metabolism, cancer progression, and inflammation. Their roles in regulating lipid metabolism have been intensively studied, as some ANGPTLs are promising pharmacological targets for hypertriglyceridemia and associated cardiovascular disease. Recently, the emerging roles of ANGPTLs in inflammation have attracted great attention. First, elevated levels of multiple circulating ANGPTLs in inflammatory diseases make them potential disease biomarkers. Second, multiple ANGPTLs regulate acute or chronic inflammation via various mechanisms, including triggering inflammatory signaling through their action as ligands for integrin or forming homo- /hetero-oligomers to regulate signal transduction via extra- or intracellular mechanisms. As dysregulation of the inflammatory response is a critical trigger in many diseases, understanding the roles of ANGPTLs in inflammation will aid in drug/therapy development.
