To reveal the effects of light on the laying performance of ducks and its possible regulatory mechanisms, Shanma ducks at 52 weeks age were divided into three group treated with different photoperiods of 16 hr (control group), 24 hr (long-photoperiod group, LP), and 8 hr (short-photoperiod group, SP). Laying performance, endocrine-related hormones and gene expression of three groups were compared. The results showed that laying performance was greatest in the LP group; including laying rate, average egg weight and feed-egg ratio. Compared to the SP group, GnIH plasma concentration was decreased in the LP group, whilst FSH was increased in the LP group. GnIHR gene expression in the pituitary and large yellow follicles were downregulated in the LP group. The expression of Mel-a in large white follicles, and Mel-b and Mel-c in the hypothalamus were also downregulated in the LP group. Altogether these results suggest that extended photoperiods may promote the laying performance of ducks by inhibiting the secretion of GnIH and the expression of GnIHR and melatonin receptor genes.

Female sex workers (FSW) who use drugs are a key population at risk of HIV in Kazakhstan, and face multiple structural barriers to HIV prevention. More research is needed on the role of structural interventions such as microfinance (MF) in reducing HIV risk. This paper describes the results of a cluster-randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of a combination HIVRR+MF intervention in reducing biologically confirmed STIs and HIV risk behaviours.

This study took place from May 2015 to October 2018 in two cities in Kazakhstan. We screened 763 participants for eligibility and enrolled 354 FSW who use drugs. Participants were randomized in cohorts to receive either a four-session HIVRR intervention, or that same intervention plus 30 additional sessions of financial literacy training, vocational training and asset-building through a matched-savings programme. Repeated behavioural and biological assessments were conducted at baseline, 3-, 6- and 12-months post-intervention. Biological and behavioural prd performance on financial self-efficacy compared to HIVRR over the 12-month follow-up period.

Compared to a combination HIVRR+MF intervention, a robust HIVRR intervention alone may be sufficient to reduce sexual and drug risk behaviours among FSW who use drugs. There may be structural limitations to the promise of microfinance for HIV risk reduction among this population.

To retrospectively evaluate the incidence of and the risk factors for pneumothorax and intercostal catheter insertion (ICC) after CT-guided lung biopsy and to generate a risk prediction model for developing a pneumothorax and requiring an ICC.

255 CT-guided lung biopsies performed for 249 lesions in 249 patients from August 2014 to August 2019 were retrospectively analysed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Risk prediction models were established using backward stepwise variable selection and likelihood ratio tests and were internally validated using split-sample methods.

The overall incidence of pneumothorax was 30.2% (77/255). ICC insertion was required for 8.32% (21/255) of all procedures. The significant independent risk factors for pneumothorax were lesions not in contact with pleura (P<0.001), a shorter skin-to-pleura distance (P=0.01), the needle crossing a fissure (P=0.004) and emphysema (P=0.01); those for ICC insertion for pneumothorax were a needle through emphysema (P<0.001) and lesions in the upper lobe (P=0.017). AUC of the predictive models for pneumothorax and ICC insertion were 0.800 (95% CI 0.745-0.856) and 0.859 (95% CI 0.779-0.939) respectively. Upon internal validation, AUC of the testing sets of pneumothorax and ICC insertion were 0.769 and 0.822 on average respectively.

This paper summarizes the structural advancement of UiO-66 and its role in CO2 capture, separation, and transformation into chemicals. The first part of the review summarizes the fast-growing literature related to the CO2 capture reported by UiO-66 during the past ten years. The second part provides an overview of various advancements in UiO-66 membranes in CO2 purification. The third part describes the role of UiO-66 and its composites as catalysts for CO2 conversion into useful products. Despite many achievements, significant challenges associated with UiO-66 are addressed, and future perspectives are comprehensively presented to forecast how UiO-66 might be used further for CO2 management.Omecamtiv mecarbil (OM) is a myosin activator (myotrope), developed as a potential therapeutic agent for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. To characterize the potential pro-arrhythmic risk of this novel sarcomere activator, we evaluated OM in a series of International Conference on Harmonization S7B core and follow-up assays, including an in silico action potential (AP) model. OM was tested in (i) hERG, Nav1.5 peak, and Cav1.2 channel assays; (ii) in silico computation in a human ventricular AP (hVAP) population model; (iii) AP recordings in canine cardiac Purkinje fibers (PF); and (iv) electrocardiography analysis in isolated rabbit hearts (IRHs). OM had low potency in the hERG (half-maximal inhibitory concentration [IC50 ] = 125.5 µM) and Nav1.5 and Cav1.2 assays (IC50 > 300 µM). These potency values were used as inputs to investigate the occurrence of repolarization abnormalities (biomarkers of pro-arrhythmia) in an hVAP model over a wide range of OM concentrations. The outcome of hVAP analysis indicated low pro-arrhythmia risk at OM concentration up to 30 µM (100-fold the effective free therapeutic plasma concentration). In the isolated canine PF assay, OM shortened AP duration (APD)60 and APD90 significantly from 3 to 30 µM. In perfused IRH, ventricular repolarization (corrected QT and corrected JT intervals) was decreased significantly at greater than or equal to 1 µM OM. In summary, the comprehensive proarrhythmic assessment in human and non-rodent cardiac models provided data indicative that OM did not delay ventricular repolarization at therapeutic relevant concentrations, consistent with clinical findings.

Thymomas are the most common type of anterior mediastinal tumors. Calcification is sometimes observed in thymomas using computed tomography (CT), and it is more frequent in invasive thymomas than in noninvasive thymomas. However, the significance of calcification in thymomas remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of calcification in thymomas on invasiveness to surrounding organs and investigate the characteristics of thymoma cases with calcification at our institution.

We included thymoma patients treated at our institution between 2000 and 2016, and evaluated their characteristics, including demographics, calcification on CT, histology, Masaoka stage, and myasthenia gravis status. The patients were categorized into calcification (C) and noncalcification (NC) groups.

Among 51 included patients, 11 (21.6%) had calcification. This phase 1, open-label, single-dose crossover study in 42 healthy adults evaluated bioequivalence of a 105-mg edaravone oral suspension and intravenous edaravone (60 mg/60 min). The evaluation was whether the 90% confidence intervals (CIs) for the ratio of the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax ) and area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to the last quantifiable time point and to infinity of unchanged edaravone were between the bioequivalence limit of 0.80 and 1.25. Metabolic profiles and elimination pathways were also compared between the 2 routes. Geometric mean ratios and 90%CIs of area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to the last quantifiable time point and to infinity for unchanged edaravone satisfied bioequivalence limits. The geometric mean ratio and its lower limit of 90%CI of Cmax of the 105-mg oral suspension compared with 60-mg intravenous formulations for unchanged edaravone fell within bioequivalence limits.
