Multivariate analysis identified the French Federation of Cancer Centers Sarcoma Group (FNCLCC) grade and completeness of resection as independent predictors of LRFS. Variables included in our nomogram were presentation status, multifocality, completeness of resection, histologic subtypes, and FNCLCC grade. The concordance index of our nomogram was 0.732 (95% CI 0.667-0.797) and the calibration plot was excellent.

Worldwide, there has been a growing interest in oncofertility issues. In 2017, the Japanese Society of Clinical Oncology published clinical practice guidelines for fertility preservation (FP) in cancer patients. We conducted a questionnaire survey to explore the FP practices among hematologists before the publication of this guideline.

We sent 427 designated cancer hospitals in Japan a questionnaire about FP treatment for patients with hematological malignancies between January and December 2014.

Of these, 137 institutions responded, and 81 (19.0%) were included in the analysis. A total of 324 female and 441 male patients, aged < 40years, were treated. The percentage of patients informed about FP was higher in patients treated with hematopoietic cell transplant than those without. Female patients were less likely to be informed about FP than male patients. FP was performed in a total of 27 female patients 20 oocyte cryopreservation, 2 embryo cryopreservation, 3 ovarian tissue cryopreservation, and 2 ovarian shielding during total body irradiation. Sperm cryopreservation was performed in 115 male patients.

Our findings indicate the reality of fertility preservation in 2014, before the guideline were issued. Further studies are warranted to investigate the improvement in fertility preservation since the guidelines were issued.

Constipation is a common side effect of opioid therapy. An observational study of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in Japanese patients with cancer (OIC-J) included 212 patients with various tumor types. This post hoc analysis of OIC-J evaluated a subgroup of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer.

Patients were aged ≥ 20years, starting strong opioid therapy, had an ECOG PS of ≤ 2, and must have had ≥ 3 bowel movements during the week before enrollment. OIC was evaluated for 2weeks after opioid initiation using the Rome IV diagnostic criteria for colorectal disorders, as well as physician's diagnosis, number of spontaneous bowel movements, Bowel Function Index score, and patient's self-assessment. Relationships between baseline characteristics and OIC incidence, and the effects of OIC on quality of life (QOL) were also explored.

Fifty patients from OIC-J who had GI cancer [colon (50%), stomach (28%), and esophageal (22%)] were included. OIC incidence varied by which diagnostic criteria were used (46.0-62.0%) and occurred rapidly after initiating opioid therapy. The use of prophylactic laxatives reduced the overall incidence rate of OIC from 71.0% to 47.4%. No baseline characteristics, except comorbidities, were associated with OIC incidence. Change from baseline to day 15 in PAC-SYM total score was significantly greater for patients with OIC versus those without OIC (0.188 versus -0.362; P = 0.0011).

This post hoc analysis suggests that OIC occurs rapidly in patients with GI cancer after initiating opioid therapy, and negatively impacts QOL. Early and effective intervention strategies may be particularly useful in this group.

Coauthor Makio Gamoh is deceased.This study used a video prompting intervention to overcome language barriers between English-speaking trainers and Spanish-speaking immigrant parents of children with autism. Parents were taught instructional skills targeting independent dressing. A multiple baseline design across three families and a replication using an alternating treatments design with a fourth family were used to evaluate the effects of the intervention. All mothers reached mastery criterion and generalization of instructional skills was observed for three mothers, with treatment gains maintaining during follow-up. Improvement in independent dressing skills was observed for four children. Findings suggest that video prompting can be used to teach immigrant parents of children with autism who have limited English proficiency when there is a language mismatch between parents and trainers.Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a greater number of healthcare provider interactions than individuals without ASD. The obstacles to patient-centered care for this population, which include inflexibility of hospital environments, limited resources, and inadequate training, has been documented. However, there is little knowledge on efforts to address such concerns. A scoping review was conducted and the systematic search of the literature resulted in 23 relevant studies. The predominant themes include the use of data collection instruments, application of evidence-based practices and resources, and training of providers. The results of this review have implications for practitioners and future research to adapt and improve upon the provision of medical care for individuals with ASD across the lifespan.This study aims at understanding the relation among sprouting time (from 12 up to 72 h), changes in protein and starch components, and flour functionality in quinoa. Changes related to the activity of sprouting-related proteases were observed after 48 h of sprouting in all protein fractions. Progressive proteolysis resulted in relevant modification in the organization of quinoa storage proteins, with a concomitant increase in the availability of physiologically relevant metals such as copper and zinc. Changes in the protein profile upon sprouting resulted in improved foam stability, but in impaired foaming capacity. The increased levels of amylolytic enzymes upon sprouting also made starch less prompt to gelatinize upon heating. Consequently, starch re-association in a more ordered structure upon cooling was less effective, resulting in low setback viscosity. The nature and the intensity of these modifications suggest various possibilities as for using flour from sprouted quinoa as an ingredient in the formulation of baked products.The striatum is innervated by histaminergic fibers and expresses a high density of histamine H3 receptors (H3Rs), present on medium spiny neurons (MSNs) and corticostriatal afferents. In this study, in sagittal slices from the rat dorsal striatum, excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were recorded in MSNs after electrical stimulation of corticostriatal axons. The effect of H3R activation and blockers of calcium and potassium channels was evaluated with the paired-pulse facilitation protocol. In the presence of the H3R antagonist/inverse agonist clobenpropit (1 μM), the H3R agonist immepip (1 μM) had no effect on the paired-pulse ratio (PPR), but in the absence of clobenpropit, immepip induced a significant increase in PPR, accompanied by a reduction in EPSP amplitude, suggesting presynaptic inhibition. The blockade of CaV2.1 (P/Q-type) channels with ω-agatoxin TK (400 nM) increased PPR and prevented the effect of immepip. The CaV2.2 (N-type) channel blocker ω-conotoxin GVIA (1 μM) also increased PPR, but did not occlude the immepip action. Functional KIR3 channels are present in corticostriatal terminals, and in experiments in which immepip increased PPR, the KIR3 blocker tertiapin-Q (30 nM) prevented the effect of the H3R agonist. These results indicate that the presynaptic modulation by H3Rs of corticostriatal synapses involves the inhibition of Cav2.1 calcium channels and the activation of KIR3 potassium channels.Valorisation of food residues would greatly benefit from development of robust processes that create added value compared to current feed- and biogas applications. Recent advances in membrane-bioreactor-based open mixed microbial cultures, enable robust conversion of fluctuating streams of food residues to a mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). In this study, such a mixed stream of VFAs was investigated as a substrate for Escherichia coli, a well-studied organism suitable for application in further conversion of the acids into compounds of higher value, and/or that are easier to separate from the aqueous medium. BMS-794833 research buy E. coli was cultured in batch on a VFA-rich anaerobic digest of food residues, tolerating up to 40 mM of total VFAs without any reduction in growth rate. Little is known about whether patients with complete congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) maintain visual function throughout their lifetime. The purpose of this report was to describe clinical and genetic features of an elderly female patient with complete CSNB that we followed for 5years.

Molecular genetic analysis using whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed to detect disease-causing variants. We performed a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including full-field electroretinography (ERG).

In the patient, WES identified two novel variants (c.1034delT; p.Phe345SerfsTer16 and c.1880T>A; p.Met627Lys) in the TRPM1 gene. Her unaffected daughter has one of the variants. The patient reported that her visual acuity has remained unchanged since elementary school. At the age of 68years old, fundus and fundus autofluorescence imaging showed no remarkable findings except for mild myopic changes. Goldmann perimetry showed preserved visual fields with all V-4e, I-4e, I-3e and I-2e isopters. Optical coherence tomography demonstrated preserved retinal thickness and lamination.
