All B chromosomes were entirely heterochromatic. In contrast to all complement A and B2 chromosomes, in which the telomeric sequences were found in the telomeric regions, B1 chromosomes of all populations were totally marked by (TTAGGG)n probes. (GATA)n sequence sites were found through all complement A chromosomes, but B1 and B2 chromosomes exhibited only a clustered block in one of the chromosome arms. The most frequent B chromosomes (B1) in all populations/species, including those previously studied in Auchenipteridae catfishes, share the following characteristics totally heterochromatic, small, metacentric, with accumulation of repetitive (TTAGGG)n sequences, and a low number of (GATA)n copies, which might suggest a common ancient origin in Trachelyopterus species/populations.
Patients who are overweight or obese have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Weight loss can have a positive effect on glycemic control.
We aimed to investigate glycemic control in patients with T2DM and overweight or obesity during a structured weight-loss program.
This was a prospective, interventional study. We recruited 36 patients (14 men and 22 women) with a median age of 58.5 years and median body mass index (BMI) of 34.1, to a 15-week structured weight-loss program with a low-calorie (800 kcal) formula diet for 6 weeks. The primary end point, HbA1c level, and secondary end points, anthropometric data, medication, and safety, were assessed weekly. Laboratory values and quality of life were assessed at baseline and after 15 weeks.
HbA1c decreased from 7.3% at baseline to 6.5% at 15 weeks (p < 0.001), median body weight by 11.9 kg (p < 0.001), median BMI by 4.3 (p < 0.001) and median waist circumference by 11.0 cm (p < 0.001). Two participants discontinueecline in mental health and the long-term effects of improved glycemic control require further trials.
A structured weight-loss program is effective in the short term in reducing HbA1c, weight, and antidiabetic medication in patients with T2DM who are overweight or obese. Levels of HDL-C and LDL-C were not affected by short-term weight loss. The decline in mental health and the long-term effects of improved glycemic control require further trials.
Urticaria can be the only sign of a food allergy or can be seen together with other signs and symptoms of a food allergy.
To determine the demographic, etiologic, and clinical features of food-induced acute urticaria in childhood.
Patients suspected of food-induced acute urticaria were included in this prospective cross-sectional multicenter study.
Two hundred twenty-nine urticaria cases were included in this study. Seventeen patients who did not meet the inclusion criteria of the study were excluded. Of the 212 included cases, 179 (84.4%) were diagnosed with definitive food-induced acute urticaria. The most common foods causing acute urticaria were cow's milk, hen's eggs, and nuts in 56.4, 35.2, and 19% of cases, respectively. The positive predictive value of a history of milk-induced acute urticaria together with a milk-specific IgE >5 kU/L for cow's milk-induced acute urticaria was 92% (95% CI 81-96%). A history of cow's milk-induced and/or hen's egg-induced acute urticaria was consistent with a definitive diagnosis of food-induced urticaria (Chen's kappa 0.664 and 0.627 for milk and eggs, respectively). Urticaria activity scores were higher in patients with food-induced acute urticaria (p = 0.002).
Cow's milk, hen's eggs, and nuts were the most common allergens in the etiology of childhood food-induced acute urticaria. Although the urticaria activity score provides guidance for diagnosis, an oral food challenge is often essential for the definitive diagnosis of a patient with a history of food-induced acute urticaria.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that the antidiabetic drug metformin (MET) can also inhibit abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation. However, the underlying protective mechanism remains unknown. It has been reported that phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) levels are significantly lower in AAA tissues than control aortic tissues. AMPK activation can inhibit the downstream signaling molecule called mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), which has also been reported be upregulated in thoracic aneurysms. Thus, blocking mTOR signaling could attenuate AAA progression. MET is a known agonist of AMPK. Therefore, in this study, we investigated if MET could inhibit formation of AAA by activating the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.
The AAA animal model was induced by intraluminal porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) perfusion in male Sprague Dawley rats. The rats were treated with MET or compound C (C.C), which is an AMPK inhibitor. AAA formation was monitored by serial ultrasound. Aortas were collected 4 weeks after surgery and subjected to immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and transmission electron microscopy analyses.
MET treatment dramatically inhibited the formation of AAA 4 weeks after PPE perfusion. MET reduced the aortic diameter, downregulated both macrophage infiltration and matrix metalloproteinase expression, decreased neovascularization, and preserved the contractile phenotype of the aortic vascular smooth muscle cells. Furthermore, we detected an increase in autophagy after MET treatment. All of these effects were reversed by the AMPK inhibitor C.C.
This study demonstrated that MET activates AMPK and suppresses AAA formation. Our study provides a novel mechanism for MET and suggests that MET could be potentially used as a therapeutic candidate for preventing AAA.

We aimed to compare implant osseointegration with calcium phosphate (CaP) surfaces and rough subtractive-treated sandblasted/acid etched surfaces (SA) in an in vivo minipig mandible model.
A total of 36 cylindrical press-fit implants with two different surfaces (CaP, n = 18; SA, n = 18) were inserted bilaterally into the mandible of 9 adult female minipigs. After 2, 4, and 8 weeks, we analyzed the cortical bone-to-implant contact (cBIC; %) and area coverage of bone-to-implant contact within representative bone chambers (aBIC; %).
After 2 weeks, CaP implants showed no significant increase in cBIC and aBIC compared to SA (cBIC mean 38 ± 5 vs. 16 ± 11%; aBIC mean 21 ± 1 vs. 6 ± 9%). Two CaP implants failed to achieve osseointegration. After 4 weeks, no statistical difference between CaP and SA was seen for cBIC (mean 54 ± 15 vs. 43 ± 16%) and aBIC (mean 43 ± 28 vs. 32 ± 6). However, we excluded two implants in each group due to failure of osseointegration. JNK Inhibitor VIII After 8 weeks, we observed no significant intergroup differences (cBIC 18 ± 9 vs. 18 ± 20%; aBIC 13 ± 8 vs. 16 ± 9%). Again, three CaP implants and two SA implants had to be excluded due to failure of osseointegration.
Due to multiple implant losses, we cannot recommend the oral mandibular minipig in vivo model for future endosseous implant research. Considering the higher rate of osseointegration failure, CaP coatings may provide an alternative to common subtractive implant surface modifications in the early phase post-insertion.

Irritable mood (IM) and subthreshold hypomanic symptoms are reported in half and two-fifths of major depressed subjects respectively, but their clinical and prognostic meanings remain unclear. The aim of this study was to test the clinical usefulness of 2 specifiers in DSM-IV major depressive disorder (MDD) IM occurring during an index episode (IM+) and lifetime episodes of elated mood or IM with at least 2 concurrent hypomanic symptoms (subthreshold hypomanic episodes [SHEs]).
We included 482 outpatients with MDD participating in the Combining Medications to Enhance Depression Outcome study (mean age 43.14 ± 12.46 years, 144 males - 30%). The main aim of the original study was to test whether 2 different medications when given in combination as the first treatment step, compared to 1 medication, would improve antidepressant response.
IM + subjects (N = 349; 70%) were younger and more often females, with a more severe depression, a more marked social impairment, and more psychiatric comorbidities. The IM + group was also characterized by higher levels of suicidal ideation and more cases of emotional abuse. The combination of IM+ and SHEs was associated with an even more severe clinical picture. Limitations include the post hoc method, incomplete assessment of bipolar validators (e.g., family history of bipolar illness), personality disorders and suicide attempts.
The presence of IM and SHEs in MDD correlate with an overall more severe clinical condition.

As a new generation of artificial enzymes, nanozymes have the advantages of low cost, good stability, simple preparation, and easy storage, allowing them to overcome many of the limitations of natural enzymes in enzymatic therapy. Currently, most reported nanozymes exhibit oxidoreductase-like activities and can regulate redox balance in cells. Nanozymes with superoxide dismutase and catalase activity can be used to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) for cell protection, while those with peroxidase and oxidase activity can generate ROS to kill harmful cells, such as tumor cells and bacteria. In this review, we summarize recent progress in nanozyme-based medicine for enzymatic therapy and highlight the opportunities and challenges in this field for future study.Fish robots have many possible applications in exploration, industry, research, and continue to increase in design complexity, control, and the behaviors they can complete. Maneuverability is an important metric of fish robot performance, with several strategies being implemented. By far the most common control scheme for fish robot maneuvers is an offset control scheme, wherein the robot's steady swimming is controlled by sinusoidal function and turns are generated biasing bending to one side or another. An early bio-inspired turn control scheme is based on the C-start escape response observed in live fish. We developed a control scheme that is based on the kinematics of routine maneuvers in live fish that we call the 'pulse', which is a pattern of increasing and decreasing curvature that propagates down the body. This pattern of curvature is consistent across a wide range of turn types and can be described with a limited number of variables. We compared the performance of turns using each of these three control schemes across a range of durations and bending amplitudes.
