Electrical conductivity is one of several outstanding features of graphene-polymer nanocomposites, but calculations of this property require the intricate features of the underlying conduction processes to be accounted for. To this end, a novel Monte Carlo method was developed. We first established a randomly distributed graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) network. Then, based on the tunneling effect, the contact conductance between the GNPs was calculated. Coated surfaces (CSs) were next set up to calculate the current flow from the GNPs to the polymer. Using the equipotential approximation, the potentials of the GNPs and CSs met Kirchhoff's current law, and, based on Laplace equation, the potential of the CSs was obtained from the potential of the GNP by the walk-on-spheres (WoS) method. As such, the potentials of all GNPs were obtained, and the electrical conductivity of the GNP polymer composites was calculated. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/pci-32765.html The barrier heights, polymer conductivity, diameter and thickness of the GNP determining the electrical conductivity of composites were studied in this model. The calculated conductivity and percolation threshold were shown to agree with experimental data. The influence of two tuning agents, polyglycerol ester (PE) and triblock copolymer (TC), on the properties of glycerol monooleate (MO) liquid crystalline phase (LCP) was investigated to achieve the therapeutic concentration of vancomycin hydrochloride (VHCl) into the eye, topically during 60 min (1 h) and intravitreally during 2880 min (48 h). Different techniques were used to elucidate the impact of surfactants on the structure of the LCP polarized light microscopy (PLM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and in vitro release tests I and II (simulating local and intravitreal application in the eye). The structure analysis by SAXS depicts that the inclusion of PE into the MO LCP provided partial transition of a hexagonal phase into a lamellar phase, and TC induced a partial transition of a hexagonal phase into an LCP which identification was difficult. The LCP modulated with PE and TC demonstrated different VHCl's release patterns and were evaluated by comparing our release data with the literature data. The comparison indicated that the LCP modulated with 30% w/w PE could be a promising VHCl delivery system intravitreally during 2880 min.Aims The effect of algae and its extract supplementation on glycolipid metabolism has not been finalized. Therefore, the purpose of the meta-analyses was to assess the effects of its supplementation on glycolipid metabolism concentration. link2 Methods We have systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library and Embase to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the impact of algae and its extracts supplementation on glycolipid metabolism. Effect size analysis was performed using weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% CI between the methods of the experiment group and the control group. link3 Subgroup analyses were performed to explore the possible influences of study characteristics. Publication bias and sensitivity analysis were also performed. Results A total of 27 RCTs (31 trials) with 1221 participants were finally selected for the meta-analysis. The algae and its extract intervention significantly decreased glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c, WMD = -0.18%; 95% CI -0.27 to -0.10y the effect of algae, seaweed polysaccharide, seaweed polypeptide, algae polyphenol and its products intervention on glycolipid metabolism.Body shape index (ABSI) and triponderal mass index (TMI) have been recently associated with cardiovascular risk in adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between different anthropometric adiposity indexes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Caucasian obese children and adolescents. Consecutive obese children aged ≥7 years have been enrolled. Anthropometric parameters, body composition (by bioelectrical impedance), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure have been measured. Fasting blood samples have been analyzed for lipids, insulin, glucose. A multivariate logistic regression analyses, with body mass index z-score, waist to height ratio, ABSI z-score, TMI, conicity index as predictors for MetS (IDEFICS and IDF criteria according to age) has been performed. Four hundred and three (179 boys and 224 girls) obese children, aged 7-20 years, have been evaluated. When we explored the joint contribution of each anthropometric and adiposity index of interest and BMIz on the risk of MetS, we found that the inclusion of ABSIz improved the prediction of MetS compared to BMIz alone. ABSI-BMI can be a useful index for evaluating the relative contribution of central obesity to cardiometabolic risk in clinical management of obese children and adolescents.Atherosclerosis (AS) leading to myocardial infarction and stroke remains worldwide the main cause for mortality. Vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques are responsible for these life-threatening clinical endpoints. Atherosclerosis is a chronic, complex, inflammatory disease with interactions between metabolic dysfunction, dyslipidemia, disturbed microbiome, infectious triggers, vascular, and immune cells. Undoubtedly, the immune response is a most important piece of the pathological puzzle in AS. Although macrophages and T cells have been the focus of research in recent years, B cells producing antibodies and regulating T and natural killer (NKT) cell activation are more important than formerly thought. New results show that the B cells exert a prominent role with atherogenic and protective facets mediated by distinct B cell subsets and different immunoglobulin effects. These new insights come, amongst others, from observations of the effects of innovative B cell targeted therapies in autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These diseases associate with AS, and the beneficial side effects of B cell subset depleting (modifying) therapies on atherosclerotic concomitant disease, have been observed. Moreover, the CANTOS study (NCT01327846) showed impressive results of immune-mediated inflammation as a new promising target of action for the fight against atherosclerotic endpoints. This review will reflect the putative role of B cells in AS in an attempt to connect observations from animal models with the small spectrum of the thus far available human data. We will also discuss the clinical therapeutic potency of B cell modulations on the process of AS.The cooperative binding behavior of a face-directed octahedral metal-organic supercontainer featuring one endo cavity and six exo cavities was thoroughly examined in chloroform solution through ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) titration technique using two representative drug molecules as the guests. The titration curves and their nonlinear fit to Hill equation strongly suggest the efficient encapsulation of the guest molecules by the synthetic host, which exhibit interesting cooperative and stepwise binding behavior. Based on the control experiments using tetranuclear complex as a reference, it is clear that two equivalents of the guest molecules are initially encapsulated inside the endo cavity, followed by the trapping of six additional equivalents of the drug molecules through six exo cavities (1 eq. per exo cavity), and the remaining guests are entrapped by the external pockets. The results provide an in-depth understanding of the cooperative binding behavior of metal-organic supercontainers, which opens up new opportunities for designing synthetic receptors for truly biomimetic functional applications. The production of high-quality seedlings and their use in commercial planting reduce pressure on natural areas. Eugenia dysenterica DC is a native fruit tree from the Brazilian Cerrado, whose nutritional requirements are still unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supplementation on the physiology, growth and nutrient uptake, and use efficiencies of E. dysenterica seedlings grown in glasshouse conditions. The following rates were used in separate experiments 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg dm-3 N and 0, 100, 200, 400, and 600 mg dm-3 P. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block with four replications. The lowest N rate (50 mg dm-3) increased the stomatal conductance (gS) and, consequently, resulted in the highest transpiration (E), electron transport (ETR), and photosynthetic (A) rates. Also, rates of 50 mg dm-3 and 100 mg dm-3 N increased the Root Uptake Efficiency (RUE) and plant Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) for macronutrients and the RUE for micronutrients, stimulating plant growth. Phosphorous fertilization resulted in the maximum values for photosynthesis, electron transport rate, total dry mass, and NUE at the 200 mg dm-3 rate. The results of this study suggest that fertilization with 50 mg dm-3 N and 200 mg dm-3 P is suitable for the development of E. dysenterica seedlings.Sequencing datasets available in public repositories are already high in number, and their growth is exponential. Raw sequencing data files constitute a substantial portion of these data, and they need to be pre-processed for any downstream analyses. The removal of adapter sequences is the first essential step. Tools available for the automated detection of adapters in single-read sequencing protocol datasets have certain limitations. To explore these datasets, one needs to retrieve the information on adapter sequences from the methods sections of appropriate research articles. This can be time-consuming in metadata analyses. Moreover, not all research articles provide the information on adapter sequences. We have developed adapt_find, a tool that automates the process of adapter sequences identification in raw single-read sequencing datasets. We have verified adapt_find through testing a number of publicly available datasets. adapt_find secures a robust, reliable and high-throughput process across different sequencing technologies and various adapter designs. It does not need prior knowledge of the adapter sequences. We also produced associated tools random_mer, for the detection of random N bases either on one or both termini of the reads, and fastqc_parser, for consolidating the results from FASTQC outputs. Together, this is a valuable tool set for metadata analyses on multiple sequencing datasets.Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains are a major cause of illness and death in mammals, including neonatal, recently weaned pigs and infant human beings. We have previously shown that outer membrane vesicles (OMV) obtained from ETEC serotypes encapsulated into zein nanoparticles, coated with a Gantrez-mannosamine polymer conjugate (OMV-NP), were immunogenic in mice and sows. In the present study, we show that pups from vaccinated mice were protected against ETEC F4 serotype challenge through maternal passive immunization. OMV from F4 cultures were collected and characterized. Two-week-pregnant BALB/c mice were orally immunized with a single dose of vesicles (0.2 mg) either free (OMV) or encapsulated into nanoparticles (OMV-NP). Evaluation of the antibodies in serum (IgG1, Ig2a or IgA) and feces (IgA) of dams immunized with OMV-NP revealed an enhancement of specific immunogenicity. The antibody response conferred by the nanoparticle adjuvant was also correlated with IL-6 and IL-10 splenic levels. Each mother was allowed to feed her progeny for one week.
