The presence of cavities is associated with unfavorable prognosis in patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). However, little is known about the characteristics of such cavities and their impact on clinical outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the size of cavities and their implications on treatment outcomes and mortality in patients with NTM-PD.

We included patients diagnosed with NTM-PD at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2018. We measured the size of cavities on chest computed tomography scans performed at the time of diagnosis and used multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to investigate the impact of these measurements on treatment outcomes and mortality.

The study cohort comprised 421 patients (noncavitary, n = 329; cavitary, n = 92) with NTM-PD. During a median follow-up period of 49 months, 118 (35.9%) of the 329 patients with noncavitary and 64 (69.6%) of the 92 patients with cavitary NTM-PD received antibiotic treatment. Cavities >2 cm were associated with worse treatment outcomes (adjusted odds ratio, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.17-0.96) and higher mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.52; 95% CI, 1.09-5.84), while there was no difference in treatment outcomes or mortality between patients with cavities ≤2 cm and patients with noncavitary NTM-PD.

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), the preferred modality for intravenous antibiotics for infective endocarditis, has demonstrated similar outcomes among patients with DUA-IE versus non-DUA-IE, but current studies suffer selection bias. The utilization of OPAT for DUA-IE more generally is not well studied.

This retrospective cohort study compared OPAT use for DUA-IE versus non-DUA-IE in adults hospitalized between January 1, 2015 and September 1, 2019 at 3 urban hospitals. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy has become a popular nonoperative adjuvant treatment for such injuries to help reduce recovery time and avoid surgery.

To analyze patient outcomes by injury severity and identify injury types that responded most favorably and unfavorably to PRP treatment. It was hypothesized that PRP therapy would prove to be most beneficial in the treatment of lower-grade, partial UCL tears and less effective in the treatment of more severe, complete UCL tears.

A cohort of 50 patients with UCL injuries in their dominant elbow, diagnosed by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) arthrogram, underwent PRP therapy in conjunction with an established rehabilitation program. UCL injuries were classified by MRI as low-grade partial tear (Type I), high-grade partial tear (Type II), cpromise when combined with physical therapy and a rehabilitation program. Type III UCL tears demonstrated a high rate of success, although with low cohort numbers. Type IV UCL tears did not appear to respond well to PRP injection therapy and often required surgical intervention or cessation of sport. Therefore, PRP treatment does not appear to be appropriate for patients with complete Type IV UCL tears but may enhance recovery and improve outcomes in throwing athletes with Types I, II, and III UCL injuries.

Quantifying how the quadriceps load the ACL via the patellar tendon is important for understanding ACL injury mechanisms.

We hypothesized that flexion angle, patellar tendon orientation, and patellar tendon strain influence ACL strain during a single-leg jump. Specifically, we hypothesized that patellar tendon and ACL strains would increase concurrently when the knee is positioned near extension during the jump.

High-speed biplanar radiographs during a single-leg jump were obtained.
