PulseCam can detect subtle changes in blood perfusion below the skin with at least two times better sensitivity, three times better response time, and is significantly cheaper compared to infrared thermography. PulseCam can also detect venous or partial blood flow occlusion that is difficult to identify using existing modalities such as the perfusion index measured using a pulse oximeter. With the help of a pilot clinical study, we also demonstrate that PulseCam is robust and reliable in an operationally challenging surgery room setting. We anticipate that PulseCam will be used both at the bedside as well as a point-of-care blood perfusion imaging device to visualize and analyze blood perfusion in an easy-to-use and cost-effective manner.A novel nanohybrid of graphene-based Cu2ZnNiSe4 with WO3 nanorods (G-CZNS@W) was successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method to use as a counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The characterization technique confirmed the structural and morphologies of the G-CZNS@W nanohybrid, which could show rapid electrons transfer pathway through the WO3 nanorods. Moreover, the as-fabricated G-CZNS@W nanohybrid exhibited synergetic effect between G-CZNS and a WO3 nanorod, which could affect the electrocatalytic activity towards triiodide reaction. The nanohybrid exhibits an excellent photovoltaic performance of 12.16%, which is higher than that of the standard Pt electrode under the same conditions. The G-CZNS@W nanohybrid material as CE thus offers a promising low-cost Pt-free counter electrode for DSSC.Effects of chemical injuries on the cornea and limbus have been widely studied; however, little is known about glaucoma after ocular chemical injuries. We herein investigated the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of glaucoma in patients with ocular chemical burns. Medical records were reviewed of patients who visited our clinic for chemical injuries to the ocular surface. Patients were divided into glaucoma and non-glaucoma groups based on high intraocular pressure (IOP) readings. Clinical characteristics, treatment method, and therapeutic and visual outcomes were compared between the two groups. Of 29 patients (40 eyes), 9 patients (15 eyes, 37.5%) were diagnosed with glaucoma at 2.64 ± 2.92 months after injury. PLX4032 price Factors associated with glaucoma included male gender (p = 0.0114), bilateral ocular involvement (p = 0.0478), severe ocular surface involvement (Dua grades IV-VI, p = 0.0180), poor initial visual acuity (p = 0.0136), high initial IOP (p less then 0.0001), pupil involvement at initial examination (p = 0.0051), and the need for amniotic membrane transplantation in the acute stage (p = 0.0079). At final follow-up, IOP was uncontrolled in 3 eyes (20.0%), and visual acuity was worse in the glaucoma group than in the non-glaucoma group (logMAR 2.94 ± 1.86 vs 0.34 ± 0.69, p less then 0.0001). These findings suggest that careful evaluation and intensive treatment for glaucoma are essential in patients with severe ocular burns. An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper.Establishing eye contact with an individual can subsequently lead to a stronger gaze-mediated orienting effect. However, studies exploring this phenomenon have, so far, only assessed manual responses and focused on covert attention - namely, without eye movements. Here, in two experiments, we explored for the first time whether eye contact can also impact on overt attention in an oculomotor task. This approach has two main advantages, in that it relies on more sensitive, online measures of attention allocation and it better mimics real life settings. Participants performed leftwards and rightwards eye movements in response to a central cue. Furthermore, a task-irrelevant central face established - or not - eye contact with the participant, and then averted its gaze either leftwards or rightwards. Hence, eye movement direction was either congruent or incongruent with that of the gaze stimulus. In both experiments, a gaze following behaviour emerged - specifically, smaller saccadic latencies and a greater accuracy emerged on congruent than on incongruent trials - but its magnitude was not modulated by eye contact. However, in Experiment 2 - in which the different eye contact conditions were presented intermixed rather than blocked, thus making eye contact contextually salient - eye contact led to an overall decrement of saccadic latencies and enhanced the reflexive component of gaze following. Taken together, these results provide novel evidence indicating that eye contact can impact on both eye movements programming and overt gaze following mechanisms, at least when eye contact is made contextually salient.Prognosis of patients with high-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is only insufficiently displayed by current standard prognostic scores. This study aims to evaluate the role of pupil status for mortality prediction and provide improved prognostic models. Anonymized data of 477 aSAH patients admitted to our medical center from November 2010 to August 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Identification of variables independently predicting in-hospital mortality was performed by multivariable logistic regression analysis. Final regression models included Hunt & Hess scale (H&H), pupil status and age or in a simplified variation only H&H and pupil status, leading to the design of novel H&H-Pupil-Age score (HHPA) and simplified H&H-Pupil score (sHHP), respectively. In an external validation cohort of 402 patients, areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROC) of HHPA (0.841) and sHHP (0.821) were significantly higher than areas of H&H (0.794; p less then 0.001) or World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) scale (0.775; p less then 0.01). Accordingly, including information about pupil status improves the predictive performance of prognostic scores for in-hospital mortality in patients with aSAH. HHPA and sHHP allow simple, early and detailed prognosis assessment while predictive performance remained strong in an external validation cohort suggesting adequate generalizability and low interrater variability.
