Sugarcane crops management in Brazil includes the use of pesticides, as well as alternative organic fertilizers such as vinasse obtained from waste of the ethanol industry. In order to assess the effects of the environmental contamination generated by such sugarcane practices, this study was aimed to investigate the effects of the pesticides 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and fipronil, as well as vinasse, on the survival, behavior, and reproduction of the native epibenthic macroinvertebrate Hyalella meinerti through in situ and laboratory experiments. In situ assays were conducted in mesocosms with six treatments, i.e. untreated control, 2,4-D, fipronil, and vinasse, the mixture of the two pesticides, and both pesticides mixed with vinasse. Survival, swimming behavior, and reproduction were evaluated over time post contamination, from 0-96 h (T1) and 7-14 days (T2) through in situ experiments and 30-44 days (T3) and 75-89 days (T4) post contamination by laboratory bioassays with mesocosm water. Crouch gait pattern is a common gait pattern in children with diplegic cerebral palsy with excessive knee flexion throughout stance phase. Few studies have grouped this pattern of gait and usually have examined only the features of gait in the sagittal plane and mostly lower extremities without considering pelvis and trunk behavior. Studies usually categorize the gait pattern according to important variables from the researcher's point of view. Our aim was to define existing clusters of crouch gait pattern in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

Cluster analysis was applied on the lower extremity, pelvis and trunk gait kinematics data of 64 limbs of children with crouch gait pattern and 64 limbs of typically developing children. Eighty-nine kinematic variables were used as input variables for clustering.

Four clusters of crouch gait pattern were defined. Sparse K-means identified influential variables and identified the knee and hip flexion as a major factor in clustering. Kinematic of the trunk, pelvis and ankle was determined in each cluster. Trunk and pelvis kinematic features were strongly correlated with the knee and hip joint flexion severity.

Obtained clusters were confirmed observationally. With increasing knee flexion, the kinematic of the trunk and pelvis were further away from the patterns of typically developing individuals. The clusters ranking appear to be reasonable based on the crouch severity.

Although previous studies showed that frail older adults are more susceptible to develop cardiovascular diseases, the underlying effect of frailty on heart rate dynamics is still unclear. The goal of the current study was to measure heart rate changes due to normal speed and rapid walking among non-frail and pre-frail/frail older adults, and to implement heart rate dynamic measures to identify frailty status.

Eighty-eight older adults (≥65 years) were recruited and stratified into frailty groups based on the five-component Fried frailty phenotype. While performing gait tests, heart rate was recorded using a wearable ECG and accelerometer sensors. Groups consisted of 27 non-frail (age=78.70±7.32) and 61 pre-frail/frail individuals (age=81.00±8.14). The parameters of interest included baseline heart rate measures (mean heart rate and heart rate variability), and heart rate dynamics due to walking (percentage change in heart rate and required time to reach the maximum heart rate).

Respectively for normal and rapid walking conditions, pre-frail/frail participants had 46% and 44% less increase in heart rate, and 49% and 27% slower occurrence of heart rate peak, when compared to non-frail older adults (p<0.04, effect size=0.71±0.12). Measures of heart rate dynamics showed stronger associations with frailty status compared to baseline resting-state measures (sensitivity=0.75 and specificity=0.65 using heart rate dynamics measures, compared to sensitivity=0.64 and specificity=0.62 using baseline parameters).

Military deployments to austere environments since November 9, 2001 may put "deployers" at risk for respiratory disease. Sensitive, noninvasive tools for detecting large and small airways injury are needed to identify early disease and help inform management for this at-risk population.

We examined multiple breath washout (MBW) as a tool for identifying deployment-related airways disease and assessed host and exposure risk factors compared to healthy controls.

Between March 2015 and March 2020, 103 healthy controls and 71 symptomatic deployers with asthma and/or distal lung disease completed a questionnaire, spirometry and MBW testing. SAS v. 9.4 was used to compare MBW parameters between deployers and controls via univariate analyses and adjusted for demographic factors using multiple linear regression.

Deployers were significantly more likely than controls to have an abnormal lung clearance index (LCI) score indicating global ventilation inhomogeneity. Adjusting for sex, smoking status, smoking pack-years and body mass index, LCI scores were significantly more abnormal among those with deployment-related asthma and distal lung disease compared to controls.
