A wide range of trendy food colourants and ready-to-eat foods containing pearlescent pigments providing glitter effects is currently on the market. These pearlescent pigments consist of mica (potassium aluminium silicate) platelets generally coated with titanium dioxide and/or iron oxides. All single components are approved food additives in the European Union (EU) (E 555, E 171 and E 172). However, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has stated recently, that pearlescent pigments should be evaluated as new food additives. Food grade titanium dioxide was already shown to contain a considerable fraction of nanoparticles. Thus, the question about 'nano'-labelling of TiO2-containing pearlescent pigments according to the 'Novel Food' and 'Food Information to Consumers' regulations arose. In order to provide data for dealing with these issues, in this study four commercially available products of different food categories containing pearlescent pigments were characterised with focus on the structure, size and chemical composition of these pigments. The measurement methods used were flow particle image analysis (FPIA), static light scattering (SLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). After isolation from various food matrices, the glitter pigments could be easily identified and differentiated by fast FPIA screening from any remaining organic food matrix particles due to their typical platelet-like shape and transparency. The particle size distribution of the platelets was determined by means of SLS and found to be in the range of 8-167 µm. SEM was identified as the most suitable technique for the analysis of the nano-structured coating. For all constituent metal oxide particles (TiO2 and/or Fe2O3) a median minimum Feret diameter (Fmin) of 29.9-46.8 nm was obtained by quantitative SEM image analysis.

This cross-sectional study aimed to identify determinants of manual abilities of children with cerebral palsy (CP), as measured by the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS), in terms of intrinsic (child-related) and extrinsic (service-related) variables.

The participants were 106 children with a confirmed diagnosis of CP (aged 4-16 years). Two ordinal logistic regression models were conducted to identify intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of manual abilities.

Four child-related (intrinsic) variables were found to be significant determinants of manual abilities bimanual ability, ability to maintain and assume chair sitting, presence of seizures, and gross motor function, and only one service-related (extrinsic) significant variable was identified, which was receiving spasticity medications.

The results highlight several determinants that should be considered when assessing and intervening to improve manual abilities of children with CP. The findings are discussed in relation to the intervention approach, contextual modification, and assistive device prescription.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS)-based treatment selection is expected to rapidly increase worldwide. This study aimed to calculate and compare the total cost of currently used diagnostic techniques and of WGS in treatment of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), melanoma, colorectal cancer (CRC), and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in the Netherlands. Methods The activity-based costing (ABC) method was conducted to calculate total cost of included diagnostic techniques based on data provided by Dutch pathology laboratories and the Dutch-centralized cancer WGS facility. Costs were allocated to four categories capital costs, maintenance costs, software costs, and operational costs. Results The total cost per cancer patient per technique varied from € 58 (Sanger sequencing, three amplicons) to € 2925 (paired tumor-normal WGS). The operational costs accounted for the vast majority (over 90%) of the total per cancer patient technique costs. Conclusion This study outlined in detail all costing aspects and cost prices of current and new diagnostic modalities used in treatment of NSCLC, melanoma, CRC, and GIST in the Netherlands. Detailed cost differences and value comparisons between these diagnostic techniques enable future economic evaluations to support decision-making.Background Nicotine is the addictive agent in tobacco products. The monoterpene linalool is the main ingredient in the essential oils of various aromatic plants. It has previously been demonstrated that linalool has beneficial effects on some mechanisms that are important in drug addiction. Objectives The goal of the current study was to investigate the effect of linalool on nicotine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in male mice. Methods CPP was induced by administering intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of nicotine (0.5 mg/kg) during the conditioning phase. The effects of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist varenicline and linalool on the rewarding characteristics of nicotine were tested in mice with administration of linalool (12.5, 25, and 50 mg/kg, i.p.), varenicline (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline 30 minutes before nicotine injection. CPP was extinguished by repeated testing, during which conditioned mice were administered varenicline and linalool every day. One day after the last extinction trial, mice that received linalool, varenicline or saline 30 minutes before a priming injection of nicotine (0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) were immediately tested for reinstatement of CPP.Results Linalool attenuated nicotine acquisition (50 mg/kg, p less then .01) and reinstatement (25 and 50 mg/kg, respectively p less then .05, p less then .01) and accelerated the extinction of nicotine-induced CPP (50 mg/kg, p less then .05). Linalool exhibited similar effects on the reference drug varenicline in the CPP phases. Conclusion These results suggest that linalool may be helpful as an adjuvant for the treatment of nicotine use disorder.Children and young people (CYP) with appearance-affecting conditions/injuries report common pervasive psychosocial difficulties, regardless of cause, nature or extent of their visible differences. Parents or carers can also experience psychosocial difficulties and challenges specific to having CYP with a visible difference. Current literature is confined to exploring condition-specific concerns of parents, typically in more prevalent appearance-affecting conditions/injuries, whilst the experiences of parents of CYP with other visible differences are unknown. Thirty-one interviews (parents n = 20, health and support professionals n = 11) and 4 parent focus groups (n = 25) were conducted. Three overarching themes were constructed "Appearance does(n't) matter" describes the impact of having a child with a socially undesirable appearance; "Being 'battle' ready" reflects parents' desire to arm their child with resources to manage challenges, whilst "Walking the tightrope" reflects parents' lack of clarity about how best to approach this. Findings highlight shared and common cross-condition psychosocial difficulties among parents and carers.Understanding the genetic diversity of wheat is important for wheat breeding and improvement. However, there have been limited attempts to evaluate wheat diversity using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In this study, the chromosomal structures of 149 wheat accessions from 13 countries located between the latitudes of 30° and 45°N, the principal growing region for wheat, were characterized using FISH with pTa535 and pSc119.2 probes. The ranges of the numbers of FISH types in the A-, B-, and D-genomes were 2-8, 3-7, and 2-4, respectively, and the average numbers in the A- and B-genomes were greater than in the D-genome. Chromosomal translocations were detected by these probes, and previously undescribed translocations were also observed. Using the FISH, the genetic relationships among the 149 common wheat lines were divided into three groups (G1, G2, and G3). G1 mainly consisted of Southern European lines, G2 consisted of most lines from Japan and some lines from Western Asia, China, and Korea, and G3 consisted of the other lines from Southern Europe and most of the lines from Western Asia, China, and Korea. FISH karyotypes of wheat chromosomes distinguished chromosomal structural variations, revealed the genetic diversity among wheat varieties. Furthermore, these results provide valuable information for the further genetic improvement of wheat in China.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in the death of over 18 000 Canadians and has impacted the lives of all Canadians. Many Canadian research groups have expanded their research programs to include COVID-19. Over the past year, our knowledge of this novel disease has grown and has led to the initiation of a number of clinical vaccine and drug trials for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Here, we review SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) and the natural history of COVID-19, including a timeline of disease progression after SARS-CoV-2 exposure. We also review the pathophysiological effects of COVID-19 on the organ systems that have been implicated in the disease, including the lungs, upper respiratory tract, immune system, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal organs, the liver, and the kidneys. Then we review general therapeutics strategies that are being applied and investigated for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, including vaccines, antivirals, immune system enhancers, pulmonary supportive agents, immunosuppressants and (or) anti-inflammatories, and cardiovascular system regulators. Finally, we provide an overview of all current Health Canada authorized clinical drug and vaccine trials for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19.Temporal coding precision of bushy cells in the ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN), critical for sound localization and communication, depends on the generation of rapid and temporally precise action potentials (APs). Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are critically involved in this. The bushy cells in rat VCN express Kv1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.6, 3.1, 4.2, and 4.3 subunits. CCT128930 mouse The Kv1.1 subunit contributes to the generation of a temporally precise single AP. However, the understanding of the functions of other Kv subunits expressed in the bushy cells is limited. Here, we investigated the functional diversity of Kv subunits concerning their contributions to temporal coding. We characterized the electrophysiological properties of the Kv channels with different subunits using whole cell patch-clamp recording and pharmacological methods. The neuronal firing pattern changed from single to multiple APs only when the Kv1.1 subunit was blocked. The Kv subunits, including the Kv1.1, 1.2, 1.6, or 3.1, were involved in enhancing temporal coding. We conclude that the Kv channels are specialized to promote the precise and rapid coding of acoustic input by optimizing the generation of reliable APs.
