Binge eating and binge drinking are two of the most common health-risk behaviors among young people showing to frequently co-occur in nonclinical samples of adolescent boys and girls. The present study examined the role of different dimensions of family functioning in binge behaviors among adolescents. One thousand and twenty young to late adolescents (507 girls and 517 boys) with ages ranging from 16 to 22 years participated in the study and completed a survey of self-report measures. Our findings showed that adolescents who binge eat and drink and adolescents who only binge eat perceived a lower quality of family functioning with lower levels of cohesion, flexibility, communication, satisfaction and higher degree of disengagement compared to adolescents who do not binge and adolescents who only binge drink. Only adolescents who engage in both binge behaviors reported higher levels of chaotic style compared to other binge groups. Furthermore, living in families poorly flexible, highly disengaged and with communication problems among members resulted as risk factors for binge eating behavior. Results suggest the importance for prevention programs to be based on an integrated approach focused on improving family environment such as the ability in changing family structure to deal effectively with developmental problems and defining clear home rules adolescents may stand on.Numerous studies have proposed the transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the treatment of typical type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to find a new strategy with MSC therapy at an early stage of T2DM to efficiently prevent the progressive deterioration of organic dysfunction. Using the high-fat-fed hyperinsulinemia rat model, we found that before the onset of typical T2DM, bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) significantly attenuated rising insulin with decline in glucose as well as restored lipometabolic disorder and liver dysfunction. BM-MSCs also favored the histological structure recovery and proliferative capacity of pancreatic islet cells. More importantly, BM-MSC administration successfully reversed the abnormal expression of insulin resistance-related proteins including GLUT4, phosphorylated insulin receptor substrate 1, and protein kinase Akt and proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNFα in liver. These findings suggested that MSCs transplantation during hyperinsulinemia could prevent most potential risks of T2DM for patients.Natural rubber (NR), principally comprising cis-1,4-polyisoprene, is an industrially important natural hydrocarbon polymer because of its unique physical properties, which render it suitable for manufacturing items such as tires. Presently, industrial NR production depends solely on latex obtained from the Pará rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. In latex, NR is enclosed in rubber particles, which are specialized organelles comprising a hydrophobic NR core surrounded by a lipid monolayer and membrane-bound proteins. The similarity of the basic carbon skeleton structure between NR and dolichols and polyprenols, which are found in most organisms, suggests that the NR biosynthetic pathway is related to the polyisoprenoid biosynthetic pathway and that rubber transferase, which is the key enzyme in NR biosynthesis, belongs to the cis-prenyltransferase family. Here, we review recent progress in the elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying NR biosynthesis through the identification of the enzymes that are responsible for the formation of the NR backbone structure. The prognosis of HCM-LVSD has reportedly been poor, but due to its relative rarity, natural history remains incompletely characterized. Methods Data from eleven high-volume HCM specialty centers comprising the international Sarcomeric Human Cardiomyopathy Registry (SHaRe) were used to describe the natural history of patients with HCM-LVSD. Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify predictors of prognosis and incident development. Results From a cohort of 6,793 HCM patients, 553 (8%) met criteria for HCM-LVSD. Overall, 75% of HCM-LVSD patients experienced clinically relevant events and 35% met the composite outcome (all-cause death (n=128), cardiac transplantation (n=55) or left ventricular assist device implantation (n=9). After recognition of l history of HCM-LVSD was variable, 75% of patients experienced adverse events, including 35% experiencing a death-equivalent with an estimated median time of 8.4 years after developing systolic dysfunction. We examined college students' self-perceptions of the challenges of aging using essays from a "When I'm 75" assignment implemented at the beginning and end of the semester in an introductory gerontology course. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyze 24 students' perceptions of their own aging at age 75. The superordinate theme, challenges of aging, was identified along with five subordinate themes deterioration, age-related impairments, mental health, loneliness and loss, and experiencing ageism. Findings suggest that after completing the course, students both demonstrated an understanding of realistic age-related changes and had (contradictory) stereotypical ideas of what it would be like to be 75. Findings have implications for research that continues to evaluate self-perceptions and contributes to the development of pedagogical strategies and tools that promote students' optimal aging.
