The neural mechanisms underlying this change in facial attractiveness according to beauty retouching level remain unknown. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging in women as they viewed photos of their own face or unknown faces that had been retouched at three levels no, mild, and extreme. The activity in the nucleus accumbens (NA) exhibited a positive correlation with facial attractiveness, whereas amygdala activity showed a negative correlation with attractiveness. Even though the participants rated others' faces as more attractive than their own, the NA showed increased activity only for their mildly retouched own face and the amygdala exhibited greater activation in the others' faces condition than the own face condition. Moreover, amygdala activity was greater for extremely retouched faces than for unretouched or mildly retouched faces for both conditions. Frontotemporal and cortical midline areas showed greater activation for one's own than others' faces, but such self-related activation was absent when extremely retouched. These results suggest that neural activity dynamically switches between the NA and amygdala according to perceived attractiveness of one's face.Undiagnosed HIV-1 patients still account for 25% of worldwide HIV patients. Studying late presenters (LPs) for HIV care may help to identify characteristics of such patients. The present study aims to identify factors associated with late presentation and late presentation with advanced disease based on a population of patients followed in a Portuguese hospital between 1984 and 2017. Sociodemographic and clinical data from infected patients with HIV-1 aged 18 years and older, followed in Egas Moniz Hospital, in Portugal were collected. Of the 907 patients included in this study, 68.7% were males and the median age was 37 years (interquartile range 30-47). Four hundred fifty-nine patients (50.6%) were LP and, of these, 284 patients (61.9%) were LPAD. The LP population mostly originated from Portugal and sub-Saharan Africa (64.4% and 28.8%; p = .004) and the HIV exposure category, mainly heterosexuals and men have sex with men (57.0% and 24.9%; p less then .001). The stage of disease and viral load at diagnosis were significantly associated with both LP and LPAD (p less then .001). Factors associated with LP in the logistic regression included age at diagnosis lower than 30 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.34; 0.17-0.68; p = .002) and origin from sub-Saharan Africa (aOR 2.24; 1.44-3.50; p less then .001). Late presentation is a major obstacle to halt the HIV epidemic. In this population, the majority of newly diagnosed HIV-infected individuals were LPs. Our results characterize vulnerable populations that should be frequently tested for HIV.Caregivers of elderly people with neurodegenerative diseases are highly vulnerable to stressful situations and mood disorders due to their work conditions. Stress has been associated with an increased risk of developing depression, and studies have supported that caffeine consumption can act as an independent protective factor for disorder. This study investigated indexes of stress and depression symptoms in caregivers of the elderly with neurodegenerative diseases, their caffeine intake and the association between stress and depressive symptoms with the salivary biomarkers cortisol, nitric oxide and DNA damage. Participants (n = 81) were recruited from the community between July 2018 and April 2019. Stress was assessed using Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms, and depressive symptoms were measured using the Hamilton Depressive Rating Scale. Participants provided a 72-hour recall of their diet to measure caffeine intake. selleck compound Saliva samples were used to measure cortisol and nitric oxide. DNA damage was measured through micronuclei frequency after swabbing on the buccal mucosa. The majority of caregivers displayed stress and depressive symptoms. Stress was associated with educational level, tobacco use and total DNA damage. The indexes found in this population were not associated with caffeine intake or other salivary biomarkers, indicating that only some salivary molecules could be used as biomarkers for stress-related disorders. Caregivers of the elderly are exposed to stressful situations daily, however, we observed that educational level can reduce the psychological symptoms of stress and thus reduce the negative impact on quality of life.
A time-period of turning off cochlear implant (CI) might affect the speech and voice features of the CI users due to loss of auditory feedback monitoring.
To evaluate Persian-speaking CI users' speech and voice parameters in a device-on/off experiment.
Forty-eight Persian-speaking adults with post-linguistic deafness who had received a unilateral CI and 50 normally-hearing counterparts were recruited. All CI users had to fulfill three phases of speech sampling, including the device-on, device-off (a 5-hourly period), and once again device-on phase. Their Fundamental frequency, Jitter, Shimmer, Harmonics-to-noise ratio, hyper-nasality score, and the percentage of speech intelligibility were assessed for both groups.
The findings revealed that the CI-on/off conditions significantly changed cochlear implanted participants' F0, Shimmer, HNR, and hyper-nasality values. However, no statistical differences were observed in Jitter and the percentage of speech intelligibility between the CI and control groups.
