Indigenous health workers (IHW) play an integral role in the provision of culturally safe care for Indigenous communities. Despite this, IHW involvement in oral health has been limited. Therefore, this qualitative systematic review aimed to build an understanding of IHW insights on oral health.

Two independent reviewers searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Scopus using a pre-established search strategy. Qualitative studies that included IHW illustrations about oral health were considered. The search was not limited by geographic setting. Included articles were critically appraised with the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tool for qualitative studies.

The search identified 1856 articles eligible for inclusion; a total of 10 articles were included. Four synthesized findings were identified during the meta-aggregation oral health challenges in community, systemic barriers limiting IHW ability to support oral health, benefits of IHW involvement in oral health and avenues to increase IHW involvement in oral health.

The prioritization of Indigenous leadership in oral health has the potential to address many of the current challenges Indigenous communities face. Future works need to determine the capacity of IHW to provide oral health care and explore opportunities to create specific oral health roles for IHW.

Future works need to determine the capacity of IHW to provide oral health care and explore opportunities to create specific oral health roles for IHW.Originally applied to alpha oscillations in the 1970s, microstate (MS) analysis has since been used to decompose mainly broadband electroencephalogram (EEG) signals (e.g., 1-40 Hz). We hypothesised that MS decomposition within separate, narrow frequency bands could provide more fine-grained information for capturing the spatio-temporal complexity of multichannel EEG. In this study, using a large open-access dataset (n = 203), we first filtered EEG recordings into four classical frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha and beta) and thereafter compared their individual MS segmentations using mutual information as well as traditional MS measures (e.g., mean duration and time coverage). Firstly, we confirmed that MS topographies were spatially equivalent across all frequencies, matching the canonical broadband maps (A, B, C, D and C'). Interestingly, however, we observed strong informational independence of MS temporal sequences between spectral bands, together with significant divergence in traditional MS measures. For example, relative to broadband, alpha/beta band dynamics displayed greater time coverage of maps A and B, while map D was more prevalent in delta/theta bands. Moreover, using a frequency-specific MS taxonomy (e.g., ϴA and αC), we were able to predict the eyes-open versus eyes-closed behavioural state significantly better using alpha-band MS features compared with broadband ones (80 vs. 73% accuracy). Overall, our findings demonstrate the value and validity of spectrally specific MS analyses, which may prove useful for identifying new neural mechanisms in fundamental research and/or for biomarker discovery in clinical populations.

Blood transfusions after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been associated to adverse outcomes, especially in anemic patients. However, little is known about the influence of the modality of revascularization. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the impact of TAR-CABG versus SV-CABG on blood products use and perioperative outcomes in patients with preoperative anemia, normally at higher risk for postoperative transfusions.

From a cohort of 936 patients with mild preoperative anemia undergoing primary elective on-pump CABG, 166 matched pairs of patients undergoing either TAR- or SV-CABG were obtained. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin level<13 g/dl for men and <12 g/dl for women. The primary endpoint was the evaluation of red packed cells (RPC) use over the entire hospital stay.

TAR patients showed significantly reduced RPC usage compared with SV (mean difference 0.45 units). TAR patients had a reduced intubation time (mean difference 7.6 h) and were discharged 1.24 days earlier than SV patients. Pneumonia and acute kidney injury were doubled among SV patients. Adjusted regression showed that TAR technique is a predictor of reduced RPC unit use regardless of age and EuroSCORE II (odds ratio 0.63, p < .01).

Airline pilots face significant ultraviolet radiation exposure resulting in an increased risk of sun damage and skin cancers. We aimed to evaluate sun-protective practices and associated factors among airline pilots.

We disseminated an online questionnaire evaluating the use of sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and protective clothing during daytime hours in the cockpit and during outdoor activities to 346 global commercial airline pilots, and we received 220 completed responses. The Pearson chi-squared test or Fisher's exact test where necessary were used to determine possible factors associated with the use of sun-protective practices. Potential confounders were adjusted for using multivariate analyses.

The most common sun protective behaviour was the wearing of sunglasses during daytime flights (89.5%), followed by the use of caps during outdoor activities (47.7%). More pilots applied sunscreen during daytime flights (14.1%) compared with walk-arounds (8.2%). Males were less likely to use sunscreen during flights (adjusted odds ratio, aOR=0.76), use sunscreen for walk-arounds (aOR=0.175) and wear long sleeves (aOR=0.013). Pilots who flew less than 30h a month in high latitude regions were less likely to use a cap or hat outdoors (aOR=0.419) or use sunscreen during walk-arounds (aOR=0.241). Younger pilots were also less likely to use caps or hats outdoors (aOR=0.446).

Inhibition of SOS·Ras could regulate the function of Ras in cells and has emerged as an effective strategy for battling Ras related cancers. A key factor to the success of this approach is to understand the conformational change of Ras during the GTP exchange process. In this study, we perform an extensive molecular dynamics simulation to characterize the specific conformations of Ras without and with guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) of SOS, especially for the substates of State 1 of HRasGTP∙Mg2+ . The potent binding pockets on the surfaces of the RasGDP∙Mg2+ , the S1.1 and S1.2 substates in State 1 of RasGTP∙Mg2+ and the ternary complexes with SOS are predicted, including the binding sites of other domains of SOS. This promise has not been realized due to low expression levels in mammalian cells producing IgM class antibodies, and the failure of protein A chromatography for IgM purification. Here, we describe a nonchromatographic platform for quantitatively capturing IgMs at neutral pH, which is then recovered with 86%-94% yield and >95% purity at pH 3. The platform contains micelles conjugated with the [(bathophenanthroline)3 Fe2+ ] amphiphilic complex. Inclusion of amino acid monomers, for example, phenylalanine or tyrosine, during conjugation of detergent micelles, allows subsequent extraction of IgMs at close to neutral pH. With the successful implementation of this purification platform for both polyclonal humans and bovine IgMs, we anticipate similar results for monoclonal IgMs, most relevant for the pharmaceutical industry.The current review focuses on our work on the relationship between the error-related negativity (i.e., ERN) and anxiety in children and adolescents. The ERN is an event-related potential (ERP) that appears as a negative deflection in the ERP waveform when individuals make errors and has been found to be increased in anxious individuals. We, and others, have extended this work into developmental populations, finding that the ERN can be measured reliably in children and that the ERN is increased among clinically anxious youth. Furthermore, we have found that the ERN predicts risk for increases in anxiety across development, among healthy and clinically anxious children. We have done work to elucidate what psychological phenomena the increased ERN among anxious children may reflect by creating a self-report measure of error sensitivity (i.e., the Child Error Sensitivity Index) that relates to the ERN. Moreover, we review our work on parenting and the ERN, which suggests that harsh or critical parenting styles may potentiate the ERN in offspring. And, building on these findings, we discuss our recent work to develop novel, computerized intervention strategies to reduce the ERN and thereby risk for anxiety.We studied the fitness consequences of colonizing a novel host by experimental lines of fleas (Synosternus cleopatrae and Xenopsylla ramesis) maintained for 18-22 generations on the principal or novel (sympatric or allopatric) hosts via number, developmental success and size of the offspring of the fleas exploiting these hosts. We asked whether (a) fitness on non-principal hosts increases after prolonged maintenance; (b) the colonization success depends on the spatial co-occurrence of a flea and a host and (c) colonization of a novel host is accompanied by a decreased ability to exploit an original host. The ability of fleas to colonize novel hosts differed between species, with S. cleopatrae, but not X. ramesis, increasing its offspring production on novel hosts. Spatial co-occurrence did not affect colonization success. Maintenance on an alternative host was not accompanied by decreased adaptation to the original host. When fleas returned to the original host, their reproductive output was higher than that of their ancestors.
