5 kGy) in the jeotgal manufacturing industry for the reduction of norovirus. In many countries campylobacteriosis ranks as one of the most frequently reported foodborne illnesses and poultry is the commodity that is most often associated with these illnesses. Angiogenesis inhibitor Nevertheless, efforts to reduce the occurrence of pathogen contamination on poultry are often more focused on Salmonella. While some control measures are pathogen specific, such as pre-harvest vaccination for Salmonella, improvements in sanitary dressing and interventions applied during the slaughter process can be effective against all forms of microbial contamination. To investigate the potential effectiveness of these non-specific pathogen reduction strategies in the United States, it is helpful to assess if, and by how much, Campylobacter contamination of chicken meat has changed across time. Angiogenesis inhibitor This study assesses change considering data collected in both slaughter and retail establishments and comparing observed trends in contamination with trends in human surveillance data. The results support the assertion that substantial reductions in Campylobacter contamination of chicken meat in the late 1990s and early 2000s contributed to a reduction in the human case rate of campylobacteriosis. Further reductions in chicken meat contamination between 2013 and 2018 are more difficult to associate with trends in human illnesses, with one contributing factor being the inclusion of culture independent diagnostic test results in the official case counts during that time. Other contributing factors are discussed.

Ecological evidence suggests that exposure to air pollution affects coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes. However, no individual-level study has confirmed the association to date.

We identified COVID-19 patients diagnosed at the University of Cincinnati hospitals and clinics and estimated particulate matter ≤2.5μm (PM

) exposure over a 10-year period (2008-2017) at their residential zip codes. We used logistic regression to evaluate the association between PM

exposure and hospitalizations for COVID-19, adjusting for socioeconomic characteristics and comorbidities.

Among the 1128 patients included in our study, the mean (standard deviation) PM

was 11.34 (0.70) μg/m

for the 10-year average exposure and 13.83 (1.03) μg/m

for the 10-year maximal exposures. The association between long-term PM

exposure and hospitalization for COVID-19 was contingent upon having pre-existing asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary (COPD) (P

=0.030 for average PM

and P

=0.001 for maximal PM

). In COVID-19 patients with asthma or COPD, the odds of hospitalization were 62% higher with 1μg/m

increment in 10-year average PM

(odds ratio [OR] 1.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-2.64) and 65% higher with 1μg/m

increase in 10-year maximal PM

levels (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.16-2.35). However, among COVID-19 patients without asthma or COPD, PM

exposure was not associated with higher hospitalizations (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.65-1.09 for average PM

and OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.65-0.95 for maximal PM

).

Long-term exposure to PM

is associated with higher odds of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients with pre-existing asthma or COPD.

In December 2020, the European Agency of Medicine (EMA) licensed the first Sars-CoV-2 vaccine. Therapeutic management of the COVID-19 positive patient should primarily aim to avoid the severe complications and organ injury caused by generalized inflammation caused by a cytokine storm and occurring in the most severe stages of viral infection. Current knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms of SARS- CoV-2 suggests a central role for exaggerated activation of the innate immune system as an important contributor to the adverse outcomes of COVID-19. Several studies have shown that blocking the cytokine storm or acting early with prevention of it can be effective; studies are underway to evaluate agents that may be able to reduce this hyperinflammatory state. The search for effective management strategies for COVID-19 continues to evolve. link= Angiogenesis inhibitor The actions of colchicine, one of the oldest anti-inflammatory therapies, target multiple targets associated with excessive COVID-19 inflammation. Colchicine is easily administered, generally well tolerated, and inexpensive. This article reports the scientific and molecular rationale for the use of colchicine as monotherapy or in combination in the various stages of SARS-CoV-2 infection to modulate and control the inflammatory state. Low-dose colchicine may be considered safe and effective for the treatment and prevention of cytokine storm in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly as an adjunctive remedy to other therapeutic agents. Well-organized clinical studies are needed in this direction.

Reports comparing the characteristics of patients and their clinical outcomes between community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) COVID-19 have not yet been reported in the literature. We aimed to characterise and compare clinical, biochemical and haematological features, in addition to clinical outcomes, between these patients.

This multi-centre, retrospective, observational study enrolled 488 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients - 339 with CA infection and 149 with HA infection. All patients were admitted to a hospital within the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust between March 7th and May 18th

2020.

The CA cohort comprised of a significantly younger population, median age 75 years, versus 80 years in the HA cohort (P=0·0002). Significantly less patients in the HA group experienced fever (P=0·03) and breathlessness (P<0·0001). Furthermore, significantly more patients had anaemia and hypoalbuminaemia in the HA group, compared to the CA group (P<0·0001 for both). Hypertension and a lower median BMI were also significantly more pronounced in the HA cohort (P=0·03 and P=0·0001, respectively). The mortality rate was not significantly different between the two cohorts (34% in the CA group and 32% in the HA group, P=0·64). However, the CA group required significantly greater ICU care (10% versus 3% in the HA group, P=0·009).

Hospital-acquired and community-acquired COVID-19 display similar rates of mortality despite significant differences in baseline characteristics of the respective patient populations. Delineation of community- and hospital-acquired COVID-19 in future studies on COVID-19 may allow for more accurate interpretation of results.

Multiple microRNAs (miRNAs) have been proven to regulate osteogenic differentiation by affecting the Runx2 signaling pathway. The intervention of miRNA can delay the progress of osteoporosis (OP) and induce fracture repair by affecting bone regeneration. However, the function and mechanism of miR-187 in osteoporotic fractures are still unknown.

We first established the OP mouse model. Next, the BMD value was certified by iDXA. The miR-187 level in the OP mice and serum of OP patients was identified through qRT-PCR. link2 Bone repair and bone healing were assessed through toluidine blue staining and X-ray, and BARX2 expression was also confirmed. Osteogenesis-related proteins, ALP activity, and the matrix mineralization state were evaluated by western blot, ALP staining, and Alizarin Red staining in hMSCs after transfection with miR-187 mimics, miR-187 inhibitor, or human BarH-like homeobox 2 (BARX2) siRNA. Moreover, the interplay between miR-187 and BARX2 was identified through the dual-luciferase reporter.

The BMD value was notably reduced in the OP mice, and miR-187 was markedly downregulated in the OP mice and serum of OP patients. Meanwhile, we proved that miR-187 induced bone reconstruction and healing, and downregulated BARX2 in the OP mouse model. We also proved that BARX2 was a direct target of miR-187, and could be significantly downregulated by miR-187. link3 Furthermore, miR-187 induced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs by targeting BARX2.

The miR-187 might have a significant therapeutic effect in osteoporotic fractures. miR-187 accelerated osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs by directly regulating BARX2.

Breast carcinoma with extensive peritumoral vascular invasion (ePVI-BC) is a cancer with massive vascular invasion (>10) detected in more than one slide. This neoplasm shows clinic-pathological affinity with inflammatory breast carcinoma (IBC). In this paper we evaluate their biological relationship through the study of surrogate markers (β-catenin and NFAT5) of Canonical (cWnt) and non-canonical (nWnt) Wnt pathways activation.

By immunoistochemistry, we investigate β-catenin and NFAT5 in 39 IBC, 74 ePVI-BC and 84 control cases (CG-BC).

cWnt was activated in 100 % of ePVI-BC, in 64 % of IBC and 10 % of CG-BC. nWnt was activated in 20 % of ePVI-BC, 50 % of IBC and 1% of CG-BC. link2 The prognosis of carcinomas with nWnt activated was poor similar to IBC. The statistical analysis evidences as both the pathways are synergistic in malignant progression and survival time. β-catenin show an important association with prognostic factors and NFAT5 shows a relevant prognostic role on OS (p = 1.5*10

) and DFS (P = 1,2*10

). nWnt is associated with a worse prognosis independently of cWnt. cWnt is associated with adverse prognosis (DFS p = 0.0469; OS p = 0.004891) but its prognostic role is indifferent in carcinoma with nWnt activated.

Canonical Wnt pathway is involved in malignant progression with dominant role for vascular invasion whereas non canonical Wnt pathway plays an important role on survival time including the capacity to identify carcinomas with IBC-like prognosis. Furthermore ePVI may represent a "prodromal form of IBC" as demonstrated by its clinicopathological and biological similarity with IBC.

The clinical signs are caused by a deficiency of the active thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) and have a negative impact on dog's quality of life. link3 We hypothesized that serum metabolic profile varies between healthy dogs and dogs with hypothyroidism. Twenty serum samples from dogs with hypothyroidism and 20 from healthy dogs were used for untargeted metabolomics analysis performed by LC/MS analysis. Fifteen metabolites showed significant changes between hypothyroid and healthy dogs, being the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis and pyrimidine metabolism the principal pathways altered in hypothyroidism. Specifically, metabolites such as D-gluconic acid and L-Isoleucine may potentially act as biomarkers of disease.
