This paper aimed to develop and validate a deep learning (DL) model for automated detection of the laterality of the eye on anterior segment photographs. Anterior segment photographs for training a DL model were collected with the Scheimpflug anterior segment analyzer. We applied transfer learning and fine-tuning of pre-trained deep convolutional neural networks (InceptionV3, VGG16, MobileNetV2) to develop DL models for determining the eye laterality. Testing datasets, from Scheimpflug and slit-lamp digital camera photography, were employed to test the DL model, and the results were compared with a classification performed by human experts. The performance of the DL model was evaluated by accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, operating characteristic curves, and corresponding area under the curve values. A total of 14,468 photographs were collected for the development of DL models. After training for 100 epochs, the DL models of the InceptionV3 mode achieved the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.998 (with 95% CI 0.924-0.958) for detecting eye laterality. In the external testing dataset (76 primary gaze photographs taken by a digital camera), the DL model achieves an accuracy of 96.1% (95% CI 91.7%-100%), which is better than an accuracy of 72.3% (95% CI 62.2%-82.4%), 82.8% (95% CI 78.7%-86.9%) and 86.8% (95% CI 82.5%-91.1%) achieved by human graders. Our study demonstrated that this high-performing DL model can be used for automated labeling for the laterality of eyes. Our DL model is useful for managing a large volume of the anterior segment images with a slit-lamp camera in the clinical setting.Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) has been used as a biomarker of endometrial cancer (EC) in clinical practice. However, there remains a lack of systemic research on the critical values of HE4 for diagnosing different clinical stages and pathological types of EC. This study investigated the accuracy of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) in the diagnosis of EC. Patients who were hospitalized for a chief complaint of abnormal vaginal hemorrhage at Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region People's Hospital between 2014 and 2019 were consecutively included. Pathological biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of EC; there were a total of 136 EC patients and 127 non-EC patients. The accuracy of HE4 in the diagnosis of EC was assessed with SPSS software. The accuracy of HE4 for diagnosing different clinical stages and pathological types of EC was also explored. CRCD2 research buy The critical value of HE4 for endometrial cancer was 52.40 mmol/L, with a sensitivity of 57.35% and a specificity of 76.38%. CRCD2 research buy For different stages of EC, the critical value was 36.9 mmol/L, and the sensitivity and specificity were 28% and 87.39%, respectively. For different pathological types, the critical value was 30.60 mmol/L, and the sensitivity and specificity were 93.85% and 33.33%, respectively. The diagnostic value of HE4 for EC is moderate, and the serum HE4 level cannot reflect the stage and type of EC.Hyriopsis cumingii is an important species for freshwater pearl cultivation in China. In terms of pearl production, males have larger pearls and better glossiness than females, but there are few reports focusing on the sex of H. cumingii. In this study, six mRNA and six microRNA (miRNA) libraries were prepared from ovaries and testes. Additionally, 28,502 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 32 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were identified. Compared with testis, 14,360 mRNAs and 20 miRNAs were up-regulated in ovary, 14,142 mRNAs and 12 miRNAs were down-regulated. In DEGs, the known genes related to sex determinism and/or differentiation were also identified, such as DMRT1, SOX9, SF1 for males, FOXL2 for females, and other potentially significant candidate genes. Three sex-related pathways have also been identified, which are Wnt, Notch, and TGF-beta. In 32 DEMs, the three miRNAs (miR-9-5p, miR-92, miR-184) were paid more attention, they predicted 28 target genes, which may also be candidates for sex-related miRNAs and genes. link2 Differential miRNAs target genes analysis reveals the pathway associated with oocyte meiosis and spermatogenesis. Overall, the findings of the study provide significant insights to enhance our understanding of sex differentiation and/or sex determination mechanisms for H. cumingii. The response to pain is highly individual and can be influenced by complex emotional perception. link2 This study aims to investigate the status of the pain-related emotional response, and the influence on headache characteristics and disability in migraine. We studied the pain-related emotional response in 145 consecutive migraine patients using the Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS), the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ) and compared them with 106 healthy controls. We investigated the relationship between emotional factors and migraine characteristics. The effect of pain-related emotion on migraine-related disability assessed with the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6) and the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS). Migraine patients showed significantly higher scores on total PASS (p less then 0.001), PCS (p less then 0.001) and PSQ (p = 0.002) compared to the healthy controls. The HIT-6 was weakly correlated with PASS (r = 0.390, p less then 0.001) and PCS (r = 0.354, p less then 0.001). PASS-Total (p = 0.001), headache frequency (p = 0.003), and HADS-Anxiety (p = 0.028) were independent variables associated with HIT-6. link3 Headache frequency (p less then 0.001) was an independent variable associated with MIDAS. The structural equation model indicated that headache severity has direct loading on emotion and subsequently influenced migraine-related disability. Disability has a significant effect on the frequency of abortive medication use. CRCD2 research buy Migraine patients have altered emotional responses to pain perception. Pain-related anxiety made an important contribution to headache-related disability. link3 The present results suggest that the management of disability by considering various pain-related emotional factors may be necessary for the therapeutic aspects of migraine. To examine the association between endometriosis and the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), this nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study was conducted based on National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Endometriosis (N = 16,758) and non-endometriosis (N = 16,758) groups were identified by matching baseline characteristics and comorbidities. Student's t-tests and the Kaplan-Meier estimator were utilized to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and cumulative probability of SLE in the two groups. The endometriosis group showed a significantly higher incidence density rate (0.3 vs. 0.1 per 1000 person-years) and hazard ratio in SLE group (adjusted HR [aHR], 2.37; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.35-4.14) compared to the non-endometriosis group. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with endometriosis between 30 and 45 years of age, or were non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug users, or were hormonal medications-free participants, had higher risks of SLE. For patients with endometriosis, surgical intervention did not significantly impact on the risk of SLE. Our results demonstrated an increased risk of SLE in patients with endometriosis. Clinicians should be aware of this association when managing patients with endometriosis or SLE.The vestibular system is vital for maintaining balance and stabilizing gaze and vestibular damage causes impaired postural and gaze control. link2 Here we examined the effects of vestibular loss and subsequent compensation on head motion kinematics during voluntary behavior. Head movements were measured in vestibular schwannoma patients before, and then 6 weeks and 6 months after surgical tumor removal, requiring sectioning of the involved vestibular nerve (vestibular neurectomy). Head movements were recorded in six dimensions using a small head-mounted sensor while patients performed the Functional Gait Assessment (FGA). Kinematic measures differed between patients (at all three time points) and normal subjects on several challenging FGA tasks, indicating that vestibular damage (caused by the tumor or neurectomy) alters head movements in a manner that is not normalized by central compensation. Kinematics measured at different time points relative to vestibular neurectomy differed substantially between pre-operative and 6-week post-operative states but changed little between 6-week and > 6-month post-operative states, demonstrating that compensation affecting head kinematics is relatively rapid. Our results indicate that quantifying head kinematics during self-generated gait tasks provides valuable information about vestibular damage and compensation, suggesting that early changes in patient head motion strategy may be maladaptive for long-term vestibular compensation. In this paper, we propose a method of designing ultra-wideband single-layer metasurfaces for cross-polarization conversion, via the introduction of Fano resonances. By adding sub-branches onto the unit cell structure, the induced surface currents are disturbed, leading to coexistence of both bright and dark modes at higher frequencies. Due to the strong interaction between the two modes, Fano resonance can be produced. In this way, five resonances in all are produced by the single-layer metasurface. The first four are conventional and are generated by electric and magnetic resonances, whereas the fifth one is caused by Fano resonance, which further extends the bandwidth. A prototype was designed, fabricated and measured to verify this method. Both the simulated and measured results show that a 14.4 bandwidth can be achieved for both x- and y-polarized waves, with almost all polarization conversion ratio (PCR) above 90%. This method provides an effective alternative to metasurface bandwidth extension and can also be extended to higher bands such as THz and infrared frequencies.Environmental microbiomes encompass massive biodiversity and genetic information with a wide-ranging potential for industrial and agricultural applications. Knowledge of the relationship between microbiomes and environmental factors is crucial for translating that information into practical uses. In this study, the integrated data of Southeast Asian soil bacteriomes were used as models to assess the variation in taxonomic and functional diversity of bacterial communities. Our results demonstrated that there were differences in soil bacteriomes across different geographic locality with different soil characteristics soil class and pH level. Such differences were observed in taxonomic diversity, interspecific association patterns, and functional diversity of soil bacteriomes. The bacterial-mediated biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen, sulfur, carbon, and phosphorus illustrated the functional relationship of soil bacteriome and soil characteristics, as well as an influence from bacterial interspecific interaction. The insights from this study reveal the importance of microbiome data integration for future microbiome research. The biological mechanisms involved in aseptic loosening include inflammation-associated and bone resorption-associated processes. Coordinated cellular actions result in biochemical imbalances with devastating consequences for the joint. link3 Given that this condition is not known for showing systemic signs, we investigated whether circulating levels of inflammation-related proteins are altered in patients with aseptic loosening. Our study included 37 patients who underwent revision surgery due to hip osteolysis and aseptic loosening and 31 patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. Using antibody arrays, we evaluated the serum levels of 320 proteins in four patients from each group. The results showed differences in insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP-1) concentrations, which we then quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tests in all study patients. The results confirmed that serum IGFBP-1 concentrations were higher in the revision surgery patients than in the hip arthroplasty patients.
