Furthermore, this system oxidized 80% of 0.1 mM sulfanilamide, whereas only 30% was oxidized by conventional Fenton reaction, indicating that this combined system is effective and applicable to remediate groundwater. This study provides an alternative oxidation process to achieve in-situ chemical oxidation.Dark septate endophytes (DSEs) are the typical representatives of root endophytic fungi in heavy metal (HM)-contaminated environments. However, little is known about their roles in the HMs tolerance of hosts and the underlying mechanism. Here, we investigated the biological roles and molecular mechanisms of a DSE strain Falciphora oryzae in alleviating cadmium (Cd) toxicities in rice. It was found that F. oryzae possessed a capacity of accumulating Cd in its vacuoles and chlamydospores. During symbiosis, F. oryzae conferred improved Cd tolerance to rice, decreasing Cd accumulation in roots and translocation to shoots. F. oryzae alleviated Cd toxicity to rice by sequestering Cd in its vacuoles. Further application of F. oryzae as fertilizer in the field could reduce Cd content in rice grains. We identified a SNARE Syntaxin 1 gene through proteomics, which participated in Cd tolerance of F. oryzae by regulating chlamydospore formation and vacuole enlargement. Selleck 3-MA This study provided novel insights into how the DSEs and their host plants combat Cd stress.Slags are a co-product produced by the steel manufacturing industry and have mainly been utilised for aggregates in concreting and road construction. The increased utilisation of slag can increase economic growth and sustainability for future generations by creating a closed-loop system, circular economy within the metallurgical industries. Slags can be used as a soil amendment, and slag characteristics may reduce leachate potential of heavy metals, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as contain essential nutrients required for agricultural use and environmental remediation. This review aims to examine various slag generation processes in steel plants, their physicochemical characteristics in relation to beneficial utilisation as a soil amendment, and environmental implications and risk assessment of their utilisation in agricultural soils. link2 In relation to enhancing recycling of these resources, current and emerging techniques to separate iron and phosphorus slag compositions are also outlined in this review. Although there are no known immediate direct threats posed by slag on human health, the associated risks include potential heavy metal contamination, leachate contamination, and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in plants, thereby reaching the food chain. Further research in this area is required to assess the long-term effects of slag in agricultural soils on animal and human health. The oil dispersants have been applied in a broad oil pollution area, but the dispersed oil caused environmental problems during sedimentation. Unlike oil dispersants, flake type polyolefin-based oil absorbent (PA) is not emulsified and shows excellent swelling characteristic for oil removal. However, the sprayed PA flakes cannot be fully collected due to its tiny architectures, the uncollected flakes can cause unintentional secondary pollution. In this study, we develop a kind of flake type polyolefin-based magnetic absorbent (PMA) hybridized with magnetic nanoparticle, to facilitate the collection process. The magnetic nanoparticle is uniformly dispersed in PMA due to the hydrophobic functionalization of iron oxide nanoparticle. This enables the convenient collection of isolated sorbent flakes even when they were placed in the marine system and show a desirable oil recovery performance up to about 37 times for organic solvent. Moreover, oil-soaked PMA flakes can be fully converted into refined oil via a pyrolysis process. After pyrolysis, the thermally undecomposed compounds, which comprise of carbon residue and magnetic nanoparticle, can be also separated by a magnet. The as-prepared flake type PMA possesses good oil recovery performance, fast magnetic response, and efficient oil recycling, thus representing an environmentally promising method for oil spill cleanup. The growing human impact on aquatic environments deriving from the extensive use of pharmaceuticals and the release of persistent pollutants necessitates the implementation of new, widespread methods for characterising and quantifying such contaminants and their related degradation products. Carbamazepine, 5 H-dibenzo[b,f]azepine-5-carboxamide, (CBZ) is a widely used anti-epileptic drug characterised by limited removal by conventional wastewater treatments and high persistency in the environment. In this work, CBZ detection and quantification was performed in phosphate buffer, as well as in samples of complex matrix-like landfill leachates and treated wastewater originating from a medical facility, and simultaneously by optical and electrochemical methods using a novel transparent carbon-based nanostructured electrode. link3 Coupling electrochemical (differential pulse voltammetry) with optical (UV-visible spectroscopy) methods, it has been possible to reach the limit of detection (LOD) for CBZ at the levels of 4.7 μM for the electrochemical method, 10.3 μM for the spectroscopic method, and 3.6 μM for the opto-electrochemical method. Raman spectroscopy and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry techniques were employed to support and validate the combined technique. The novel developed technique showed high selectivity to carbamazepine and its by-products, even in environmental samples. Thus, this environmentally friendly, fast and accurate detection method is believed to be successfully implementable in investigating other pharmaceutical and chemical contaminates of concern.Pharmaceuticals have seriously contaminated aquatic environments and resulted in the formation of drug-tolerant bacteria owing to continuous release and accumulation. Therefore, the development of new methods to simultaneously decompose drugs and disinfect pathogens in an environmental-friendly manner with high efficiency is still in great demand. Bioinspired by the great photosensitivity of natural product cercosporin with the ability to efficiently generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under natural sunlight and its antibacterial activity, here a novel cercosporin/polymethylmethacrylate (CP/PMMA) photocatalyst was rationally developed by incorporating and restricting cercosporin in a "green" macroporous resin PMMA, which greatly improved the ROS generation efficiency and displayed 97.2-100% photodegradation for broad-spectrum pharmaceuticals, including fluoroquinolones, trimethoprim and chloroquine phosphate, upon 15 W compact fluorescent lamp irradiation. More importantly, this decontamination efficiency was greatly improved, and the decontamination time was substantially shortened in a large-scale assay under natural sunlight. Furthermore, it could inactivate the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, this work provides new insight into how a multifunctional photocatalyst could be designed using a natural product and macroporous resins for environmental remediation.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely distributed in the environment and pose a serious threat to human health. Due to their unfavorable biological effects and persistent properties, it is extremely urgent to effectively degrade PAHs that are present in the environment, especially in wastewater. In this study, we obtained an efficient bacterial consortium (PDMC), consisting of the genera Sphingobium (58.57-72.40%) and Pseudomonas (25.93-39.75%), which is able to efficiently utilize phenanthrene or dibenzothiophene as the sole carbon source. The phenanthrene-cultivated consortium could also degrade naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, dibenzofuran, carbazole and indole, respectively. Furthermore, we identified the multiple key intermediates of aforementioned 11 substrates and discussed proposed pathways involved. Notably, a novel intermediate 1,2-dihydroxy-4a,9a-dihydroanthracene-9,10-dione of anthracene degradation was detected, which is extremely rare compared to previous reports. The PDMC consortium removed 100% of PAHs within 5 days in the small-scale wastewater bioremediation added with PAHs mixture, with a sludge settling velocity of 5% after 10 days of incubation. Experiments on the stability reveal the PDMC consortium always has excellent degrading ability for totaling 24 days. Combined with the microbial diversity analysis, the results suggest the PDMC consortium is a promising candidate to facilitate the bioremediation of PAHs-contaminated environments.Bioremediation technology has attracted increasing interest due to it efficient, economical and eco-friendly to apply to heavy metal contaminated soil. This study presents a new biological remediation system with phosphate functionalized iron-based nanomaterials and phosphate solubilizing bacterium strain Leclercia adecarboxylata. Different phosphate content functionalized iron-based nanomaterials were prepared, and nZVI@C/P1 (nP nFe nC=110200) with high passivation efficiency was selected to combine with PSB for the remediation experiments. The change in lead fraction and microbial community under five conditions (CK, PSB, nZVI@C, nZVI@C/P1, nZVI@C/P1 + PSB) during 10 days incubation were investigate. The results indicated that nZVI@C/P1 + PSB increased the residual fraction of lead by 93.94% compared with the control group. Meanwhile, inoculation of Leclercia adecarboxylata became the dominant microflora in the soil microbial community during the remediation time, improving the utilization rate of phosphate in nZVI@C/P1 and enhancing the passivation efficiency of lead. Experimental findings demonstrated that combining nZVI@C/P1 with PSB could be considered as an efficient strategy for the lead contaminated soil remediation. It is urgently needed to develop high-performance materials that can synchronously remove heavy metals and organic pollutants. Herein, the visible-light responsive Zn3In2S6/AgBr composites were prepared for concurrent removals of metronidazole (MNZ) and Cr (VI). In the Cr (VI)-MNZ coexisting system, the removals of MNZ and Cr (VI) using the optimized Zn3In2S6/AgBr-15 photocatalyst reached 98.2% and 94.8% within 2 h, respectively; higher than those using counterparts. The radical species trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) results demonstrated that ·OH was the most dominated species for MNZ oxidation, and photo-generated electrons were responsible for Cr (VI) reduction. Besides, slight competition for ·O2- during the simultaneous MNZ degradation and Cr (VI) reduction occurred. Energy band structure analysis, ESR and the outstanding photocatalytic performance for MNZ and Cr (VI) removals demonstrated that the Zn3In2S6/AgBr-15 was a Z-scheme photocatalyst, which promoted photo-induced carrier's separation. Possible MNZ degradation pathways and mechanism over the Z-scheme Zn3In2S6/AgBr were also proposed based on the identified intermediates. This study could inspire new ideas for design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.
