BACKGROUND Wild capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) usually are found in conserved forests near the zoo and the urban areas of Brasília city, Brazil. In this study, some capuchin monkeys were captured using traps, followed by safe biological procedures for their overall health analysis, based on specific haematological and biochemical tests of blood samples. METHODS Blood was collected from a total of 17 monkeys for the determination of parameters, namely packed cell volume (PCV), leucocytes, erythrocytes, platelets and triglycerides. Statistical analyses for average values, median, standard deviation and range were performed. RESULTS These parameters were set based on the minimum and maximum values obtained from the blood tests. Data are presented in tabulated form. CONCLUSIONS Capture procedures were based on animal safety analysis for free-living animals and would help future studies on wild animals. The collected samples used in this study suggested the animals to be apparently healthy in their habitat. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. MATERIALS AND METHODS A questionnaire was designed and used to assess attitudes of 36 operating room personnel to the checklist. The checklist was retrospectively audited on 984 patients over an 8-month period to investigate compliance. RESULTS Responses were obtained from 100% of theatre personnel. Attitudes to the checklist were positive, with 83.4% agreeing that it improved teamwork and 100% agreed that the checklist improved patient safety, reduced error and was best practice. Most personnel (94%) believed that a completed checklist was used for every procedure. Several barriers were highlighted, including issues of hierarchy and team-working and lack of training. 984 checklists were used during the study period with 83 (8.4%) being fully completed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Surgical safety checklists have potential to improve patient safety in veterinary operating rooms. However, appropriate design and implementation are critical and surgeons should endeavour to support checklist use. © 2020 British Small Animal Veterinary Association. The understanding of the migration of mercury from packaging materials to food stuffs is the prerequisite for the development of food safety regulations. In this article, the migration of mercury from food paper-plastic packaging containers to four food stimulants under different migrated temperatures is studied. The results show that the mobility and the maximum migration volume of mercury increase at certain temperatures when the migration time is extended. It is also noted that the time to reach equilibrium is reduced as the temperature increases. Meanwhile, different solvents appear various different while the rates of migration are 3% acetic acid >10% ethanol >20% ethanol >50% ethanol. But they show the same trend at the different temperatures. Our data suggest that different solvents, temperatures, and food stimulants affect the migration rates, and ameliorate those conditions will reduce migration and promote food quality. © 2020 Institute of Food Technologists®.Effects of lysozyme (LYS) combined with cinnamaldehyde (CA) on quality enhancement of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) fillets during refrigerated storage at 4 °C for 20 days were assessed. Changes of total viable count (TVC), K-value, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), texture profile analysis (TPA), and trichloroacetic acid-soluble peptide (TCA-soluble peptide) in samples were determined periodically. Results demonstrated that the combination of LYS and CA treatment enhanced the antibacterial activity against S. putrefaciens and P. fluorescens, and lowered TVC values. Meanwhile, LYS combined with CA significantly retarded the increases of TBA value, TVB-N, K-value, and TCA-soluble peptide content compared to the control. Furthermore, the combined treatment also effectively maintained the texture properties of flounder fillets during the storage period. The efficiency was better than that of LYS or CA treatment alone. Thus, LYS combined with CA is promising in olive flounder shelf life extension. © 2020 Institute of Food Technologists®.Young children develop causal knowledge through everyday family conversations and activities. Children's museums are an informative setting for studying the social context of causal learning because family members engage together in everyday scientific thinking as they play in museums. In this multisite collaborative project, we investigate children's developing causal thinking in the context of family interaction at museum exhibits. We focus on explaining and exploring as two fundamental collaborative processes in parent-child interaction, investigating how families explain and explore in open-ended collaboration at gear exhibits in three children's museums in Providence, RI, San Jose, CA, and Austin, TX. Our main research questions examined (a) how open-ended family exploration and explanation relate to one another to form a dynamic for children's learning; (b) how that dynamic differs for families using different interaction styles, and relates to contextual factors such as families' science background, anngoing approaches to promote the benefit of parent-child interaction during play for children's learning and problem solving. Selitrectinib chemical structure We also examine the implications of these findings for formal and informal learning settings, and for theoretical integration of constructivist and sociocultural approaches in the study of children's causal thinking. © 2020 The Society for Research in Child Development.Serial assessments of measurable (or minimal) residual disease (MRD) by qPCR may identify nascent relapse in children with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and enable pre-emptive therapy. We investigated the kinetics and prognostic impact of recurrent fusion transcripts (RUNX1-RUNX1T1, CBFB-MYH11, KMT2A-MLLT3 or KMT2A-ELL) in 774 post-induction samples from bone marrow (BM, 347) and peripheral blood (PB, 427) from 75 children with AML. BM MRD persistence during consolidation did not increase the risk of relapse, and MRD at therapy completion did not correlate to outcome (HR = 0·64/MRD log reduction (CI 0·32-1·26), P = 0·19). In contrast, 8/8 patients with detectable MRD in PB after first consolidation relapsed. Persistence (n = 4) and shifting from negative to positive (n = 10) in PB during follow-up predicted relapse in 14/14 patients. All 253 PB samples collected during follow-up from 36 patients in continuous complete remission were MRD negative. In core-binding factor AML, persistent low-level MRD positivity in BM during follow-up was frequent but an increment to above 5 × 10-4 heralded subsequent haematological relapse in 12/12 patients. We demonstrate that MRD monitoring in PB after induction therapy is highly informative and propose an MRD increment above 5 × 10-4 in PB and BM as a definition of molecular relapse since it always leads to haematological relapse. © 2020 British Society for Haematology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Ear tip-barrenness (ETB) phenotype threatens crop yield, because it reduces the kernel number per ear. The genetic basis of ETB in maize remains largely unknown. Herein, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping were jointly applied to identify the significant genetic loci interrelated with ETB. Six significant SNPs were detected at a stringent P-value threshold (1.95 × 10-6 ). Additionally, four environment-stable SNPs were co-detected across a single environment and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) model at a less stringent P-value threshold (1 × 10-4 ). The above 10 SNPs were closely linked to 6 candidate genes, which mainly involved seed development, photosynthesis and ethylene response. Moreover, the ratio of superior allele at each significant SNP ranged from 0 to 83.33% in 30 investigated maize elite lines. QTL mapping identified 14 QTL with phenotypic variation explained (PVE) ranging from 3.64 to 7.09%, of which one QTL (qETB2-1) was repeatedly identified in two environments. Combined analysis of GWAS and QTL mapping showed that one SNP (PZE-102175229, chromosome 2 217 66 Mb) was located in the QTL (qETB2-2, chromosome 2 215 90-217 82 Mb). Eighteen gene models situated in the linkage disequilibrium (LD) region of the co-localized SNP were further used to evaluate their correlation with ETB by candidate gene association analysis. Two superior haplotypes and two superior alleles were detected among 74 lines for Zm00001d007195, Zm00001d007197 and Zm00001d007201. These results provide more information for clarifying the molecular mechanism of ETB and for speeding up the genetic improvement of maize varieties. © 2020 Scandinavian Plant Physiology Society.Light is a pivotal environmental element capable of influencing multiple physiological processes across the entire plant life cycle. Over the course of their evolution, plants have developed several families of photoreceptors such as phytochromes, phototropins, ultraviolet (UV) resistance locus 8 and cryptochromes (crys), in order to sense light stimuli and respond to their changes. Numerous genetic studies have demonstrated that functional alterations to these photoreceptors cause a change in important agronomical traits. In particular, crys, which absorb UVA/blue light, can influence seed germination, flowering induction, plant architecture, fruit metabolic content and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. In the years to come, the rising temperatures and alterations to precipitation patterns generated by climate change will present a dramatic challenge for our agricultural system, with its few varieties characterized by a narrow genetic pool derived from artificial selection. Here, we review the main roles of crys in determining important agronomic traits in crops, we discuss the opportunities of using these photoreceptors as genetic targets for tuning plant physiological responses to environmental change, and the molecular strategies used so far to manipulate this family of photoreceptors. © 2020 Scandinavian Plant Physiology Society. The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize inclusion complexes between tea polyphenol (TP) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), and to evaluate their antioxidant properties. Freeze-drying was used to prepare the inclusion complex of TP/HP-β-CD at different component ratios (10.5, 11, and 12). The supermolecular structure of the TP/HP-β-CD complex was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Molecular docking was used to simulate the positions and interactions of the binding sites of TP/HP-β-CD inclusion complexes and target protein receptors. In addition, the effects of TP/HP-β-CD inclusion complexes on myofibrillar protein (MP) from lamb tripe were observed under oxidative conditions. Results showed that TP was encapsulated in the cavity of HP-β-CD to form an optimal complex with 12 molar ratio of stoichiometry, while the FTIR, TGA, and SEM studies also support the inclusion process. Molecular modeling results were systematically analyzed to determine the stability of inclusion complexes and protein.
