A new method based on coordination polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) derived from nucleotides and Tb3+ ions (GMP/Tb) for the selective and sensitive determination of aqueous 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) (picric acid) is established. The fluorescence of GMP/Tb nanoparticles is effectively quenched by TNP via photo-induced charge transfer (PCT), thus achieving its selectivity toward TNP over other nitroaromatic explosives. The decreased fluorescence of GMP/Tb shows a good linear relationship to the concentrations of TNP ranging from 5.0 to 40.0 μM, and the limit of detection is 26.0 nM (5.96 ppb). The proposed GMP/Tb probe also achieves satisfactory results in real samples. The obtained recoveries of this method in river water samples are in the range 93.15-106.10%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) are 0.57 to 1.01% based on three repeated determinations. This fabricated detector provides a feasible path for determination of ppb-level TNP in natural water samples, which can help humans to avoid TNP-contaminated drinking water. Graphical abstract.
To test the reliability and accuracy of the 2Win Refractometer Corneal Reflexes App (CR App) in detecting manifest strabismus in pediatric patients.
Prospective study involving 167 children with suspected strabismus (mean age 7.6years; SD = 3.0, range 2-14years) undergoing the CR App ocular alignment assessment (Pediatric Ophthalmologist) versus the alternate cover test with prism ocular alignment assessment for distance (Orthoptist) as the gold standard. The AAPOS 2013 guidelines for the detection of manifest strabismus in primary position (> 8 PD) were used.
Total sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV for the CR App were 79.2%, 86.2%, 86.4%, and 78.9%, respectively. The overall inconclusive rate was 17.9%, but was 36.3% in children younger than 5. Sensitivity and PPV for vertical deviations were poor (33.3% and 12.5%, respectively). The accuracy of the CR App regarding the degree (in prism diopters) of manifest deviations was tested with the Wilcoxon signed rank sum test correlation with the gold standard was good for esodeviations (p value = 0.765, not statistically significant) and poorer for exodeviations (p value = 0.056, still not statistically significant), whereas a significant difference (p value = 0.0001) was observed for vertical deviations.
The CR App showed good sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV for manifest strabismus > 8PD in accordance with the AAPOS 2013 guidelines; sensitivity and PPV were poor for vertical deviations. The accuracy of the CR App was good for horizontal deviations, but poor for vertical deviations. The inconclusive result rate was high in younger children.

After fermentation, the types of ginsenosides in ginseng change, and their physiological activity becomes a concern. L. plantarum KP-4 screened from Korean kimchi were used to ferment ginseng, and the changes of ginsenosides were observed. C57BL/6N mice were treated using fermented ginseng (390 mg kg-1 day-1), which was mixed with normal food, and an inflammatory mice model was established by the intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (2.5 mg per kg body weight) four weeks later. The liver index, pathological index, biochemical index, and inflammatory signaling pathway were determined. The results demonstrated that L. plantarum KP-4 fermentation increased the content of minor ginsenosides in ginseng and decreased the content of major ginsenosides. Fermented ginseng significantly reduced LPS-induced increases in ALT, AST, and pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β in mice. Supplementation with fermented ginseng significantly ameliorated LPS-induced overexpression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), caspase3, phosphorylation p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), and phosphorylation extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) compared with the control group. Moreover, fermented ginseng significantly increased the expression of claudin 1, the intestinal tight junction protein, caused by LPS. In conclusion, fermented ginseng alleviates LPS-induced inflammation through the TLR4/MAPK signaling pathway and increased intestinal barrier function in mice.Thermally and chemically stable, sulfonyl imide-based polymer blends have been prepared from sulfonimide poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SI-PAES) and sulfonimide Parmax-1200 (SI-Parmax-1200) using the solvent casting method. Initially, sulfonimide poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SI-PAES) polymers have typically been synthesized via direct polymerization of bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfonyl imide (SI-DCDPS) and bis(4-fluorophenyl) sulfone (DFDPS) with bisphenol A (BPA). Subsequently, SI-Parmax-1200 has been synthesized via post-modification of the existing Parmax-1200 polymer followed by sulfonation and imidization. The SI-PAES/SI-Parmax-1200 blend membranes show high ion exchange capacity ranging from 1.65 to 1.97 meq/g, water uptake ranging from 22.8 to 65.4% and proton conductivity from 25.9 to 78.5 mS/cm. Markedly, the SI-PAES-40/SI-Parmax-1200 membrane (blended-40) exhibits the highest proton conductivity (78.5 mS/cm), which is almost similar to Nafion 117® (84.73 mS/cm). The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fenton's test confirm the excellent thermal and chemical stability of the synthetic polymer blends. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study shows a distinct phase separation at the hydrophobic/hydrophilic segments, which facilitate proton conduction throughout the ionic channel of the blend polymers. Therefore, the synthetic polymer blends represent an alternative to Nafion 117® as proton exchangers for fuel cells. Background Superficial surgical site infections (S-SSIs) are common after trauma laparotomy, leading to morbidity, increased costs, and prolonged length of stay (LOS). Opportunities to mitigate S-SSI risks are limited to the intra-operative and post-operative periods. Accurate S-SSI risk stratification is paramount at the time of operation to inform immediate management. We aimed to develop a risk calculator to aid in surgical decision-making at the time of emergency laparotomy. Methods A retrospective cohort study of patients requiring emergency trauma laparotomy between 2011 and 2017 at a single, level 1 trauma center was performed. Operative factors, skin management strategy, and outcomes were determined by chart review. Bayesian multilevel logistic regression was utilized to create a risk calculator with variables available upon closure of the laparotomy. FRAX597 PAK inhibitor Models were validated on a 30% test cohort and discrimination reported as an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC). Results Of 1,322 patients, the majority were male (77%) with median age of 33 years, injured by blunt mechanism (54%), and median injury severity score of 19.
