It is estimated that nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), affects more than 3 million Americans each year. Translation of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data into identification of new potential targets for therapeutic applications may be helpful. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) is a widely used NGS method that involves sequencing the protein-coding regions of the genome.

We report a case of a 65-year-old female smoker who was found to have two 6 mm lesions in her left nasal vestibule. Biopsies demonstrated synchronous BCC and SCC. The patient underwent surgical excision of both cancers with safe margins followed by plastic reconstruction. WES was performed on both cancers and 16 alterations including BRCA2 (p.P389S), FAM5C (S420L), KMT2A (P855L), and SMO (L412F), as unique for BCC, and 4 alterations including TP53 (p.H179Q) and CDKN2A (p.P114L), as unique for SCC, were identified.

We report the first documented case with unique genetic alterations in two distinct and synchronous skin BCC and SCC arising from the same nasal vestibule of a patient. This adds to the growing field of data regarding genetic variants in characterizing malignancies and potentially for targeted therapies.

Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy among women in Vietnam, but the country is yet to introduce a national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine programme targeted at adolescents. We determined HPV prevalence and HPV vaccine knowledge among female university students in Vietnam.

We surveyed and screened 1,491 female university students in Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City for their sexual behaviours, HPV knowledge and low- and high-risk HPV infection.

The prevalence of any HPV infection and any high-risk HPV infection were 4.2% (95%CI=3.3%-5.4%) and 3.4% (95%CI=2.5%-4.4%), respectively. Being sexually active [adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) 6.22; 95%CI=3.4-11.37] and having ever been pregnant (aPR 4.82; 95%CI=1.93-12.04) were positively associated with high-risk HPV infection. Whilst 60% of participants had heard of HPV vaccine, only 4.6% had received the vaccine.

The low HPV prevalence found in university students in Vietnam indicates that they can benefit from HPV vaccination, along with a well-designed HPV health promotion programme.

Self-defense products that use high-intensity light are being developed. The intense light generated by the high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of such self-defense products causes temporary blindness. However, few studies have been conducted on the visual safety of their devices. We, therefore, evaluated the effects of strong light of a short duration on the eyes of rabbits in this study.

The right eyes of 15 rabbits were irradiated for 5 s with a lighting device (25 W, 150 lm/W at 700 mA LED) and four eyes of two rabbits were non-irradiated as controls. Changes in the eye structure and function were evaluated before, and immediately, 30 min, 1 h, 24 h, 7 days and 14 days after light irradiation by full-field electroretinogram (ERG), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and retinal camera. The thickness of the outer nuclear layer of the retina tissue was measured, and histopathological signs of retinal damage were analyzed.

The ERG results showed that night vision was not affected. In day vision, the ERG waveform was temporarily affected immediately after light irradiation; however, it recovered within 24 h. No histopathological signs of damage were observed.

Application of high-power LED light with short duration as used for self-defense was found to cause temporary phototoxicity, but safety was confirmed as vision recovered within 24 h.

The cannabinoid 2 (CB2) receptor is an important regulator of immunoinflammatory responses. Crude drugs commonly used in Japanese traditional Kampo medicine have displayed anti-inflammatory effects; however, few studies have reported that these effects are mediated via CB2 receptor signaling. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate CB2 receptor-related anti-inflammatory regulation in crude drugs.

The ethanol extracts of 34 crude drugs listed in the Japanese Pharmacopeia were tested, and the inhibitory effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production were evaluated in murine macrophage RAW 264 cells.

The extracts of Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (dried rhizome of Curcuma longa) and Saussureae Radix (dried root of Saussurea lappa) significantly inhibited NO production and attenuated the LPS-induced decrease in CB2 receptor mRNA expression.

Curcumae Longae Rhizoma and Saussureae Radix can modulate the CB2-receptor-related anti-inflammatory regulation in macrophages.

Intestinal anastomosis' integrity is crucial in surgery. This study aimed to investigate whether fibrin glue (FG) (a fibrin sealant containing human factor XII and fibrinogen) has a positive effect on the healing and the integrity of the ileoileal anastomosis in rats.

Twenty Wistar rats underwent enterotomy, ileoileal anastomosis and divided into four groups (A complete anastomosis-no FG, B complete anastomosis-FG, C incomplete anastomosis-no FG, D incomplete anastomosis-FG). Data included leak, adhesions, bursting pressure of the anastomosis, neoangiogenesis, and hydroxyproline levels.

Angiogenesis was significantly higher in group B compared to group A (p=0.019). There were no significant differences between groups A and B regarding adhesions, hydroxyproline, and bursting pressure (p=0.500, p=0.158 and p=0.829, respectively). Hydroxyproline levels were higher in group D compared to C, but did not reach significance (p=0.098).

Fibrin glue has a positive effect on ileoileal anastomoses. It is not entirely clear whether this effect is due to mechanical support or to the facilitation of the healing process or both. Further research is needed before FG can be applied to humans.

To investigate the role of the expression of hypoxia-related genes on the prognosis of ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC).

Basal mRNA levels of eight hypoxia-related genes were compared. Cell viability was assayed after treating ES-2 cells under hypoxic conditions. The mRNA and protein levels were evaluated after the induction of hypoxia and administration of increased doses of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Finally, the prognostic role of their expression levels was evaluated in 61 patients with OCCC.

The mRNA and protein levels of maspin increased gradually with the induction of hypoxia. Maspin protein expression decreased after treatment with paclitaxel and NAC. High expression of maspin was related to poor progression-free and overall survival in patients with OCCC (adjusted hazard ratios, 3.97 and 7.47; 95% confidence intervals=1.34-11.81, and 1.98-28.13).

High expression of maspin induced by hypoxia might be associated with poor prognosis of OCCC.

This study performed

Tc-MAG

renal scintigraphy on rabbit kidneys and evaluated its ability to identify obstructive or non-obstructive kidneys.

Renal function was assessed during a four-week post-obstruction period by obtaining planar images of

Tc-MAG

activity following an ear vein injection. The individual renal function was evaluated by renal scintigraphy in conjunction with histopathological and morphological examinations.

The renal perfusion of

Tc-MAG

in the right kidney with a ureteral obstruction decreased with time. The width, height, and cortical thickness of the obstructed right kidney were significantly larger than those of the left kidney. A histopathological examination four weeks after the ureteral obstruction revealed a typical pattern of urinary tract obstruction, including multiple tubules, enlargement of the interstitial area, and cytoplasmic vacuoles.

Tc-MAG

renal scintigraphy provides the kidney shape and size and can identify potential obstructive and non-obstructive kidneys in rabbits.

This study aimed to identify the most useful components of Elental

in the treatment of 5-fluorouracil (FU)-induced mucositis and salivary gland atrophy in mice.

Mice (except the control group) were intraperitoneally injected with 5-FU. The mice received saline (control group and 5-FU group), dextrin (Dextrin group), amino acids (17AA group), or Elental

(Elental

group).

The volume and weight of salivary glands was higher in 17AA and Elental

groups compared to 5-FU group. The number of mucous glands was higher, whereas the number of damaged granular ductal epithelial cells was lower in the salivary glands of all groups except the 5-FU group. Salivation was also decreased in the 5-FU group compared to the other groups.

Amino acids could be the most effective components of Elental

for protecting mouse salivary glands from 5-FU-induced atrophic changes, and might be useful in the treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients.

The pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis continue to be the subject of intensive research and study by the scientific community. Based on Fourier-transform infrared spectra and 3D-Doppler echogram, we attempted to develop a computational simulation model for predicting the association of atherosclerotic risk factors with pathogenic molecular structural changes.

Atheromatic carotid arteries from 56 patients (60-85 years old) were used as samples. Color 3D-Doppler echogram screening was performed on all patients preoperatively. Each infrared spectrum consisted of 120 co-added spectra at a spectral resolution of 4 cm

Results The infrared spectral analysis reveals 'marker bands', such as the 1,744 cm

band assigned to aldehyde formation and to the 'fingerprint' digital spectral region of 1,050-1,169 cm
