The aim of the present study was to evaluate the spatial distribution of the prevalence of T. gondii in cows using the indirect immunofluorescence assay and determine associated risk factors. Serum samples were collected from 2970 cows on 263 rural farms in 223 municipalities. A questionnaire was administered to herd owners to collect data for the evaluation of risk factors associated with this disease. Mean seroprevalence of T. gondii in cows was 8.48% (95% CI 7.48 to 9.49). The microregions with the greatest likelihood (p ≤ 0.05) of having infected animals were Anápolis, Ceres, São Miguel do Araguaia, the Federal District, Anicuns, and Vão do Paraná. The purchase of females or males for reproductive/breeding purposes was significantly associated (p ≤ 0.05) with the prevalence of T. gondii in these regions. A positive correlation (0.7618; p = 0.047) was found between the prevalence of T. gondii and total area in hectares of forests in these regions, suggesting that wild cats may be disseminating T. gondii at these sites. The present results highlight the importance of considering the meat from these animals to be an important infection route for humans who eat raw or undercooked food.Caffeic acid (CA), a hydroxycinnamic acid possessing a variety of pharmacological activities, has caused a growing interest for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and associated conditions. This work endeavored to develop a novel formulation of CA-Phospholipon® 90H complex (CA-PC) using a solvent evaporation method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), and powder X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) was carried to confirm the formation of CA-PC. The CA-PC was functionally evaluated in terms of solubility, in vitro and ex vivo drug release, and in vivo bioavailability and efficacy studies. SEM, DSC, FTIR, and XRD studies indicated the physical interaction of CA with Phospholipon® 90H to form a complex. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies described particle size of 168 ± 3.9 nm with a monodisperse distribution (PDI 0.17) and a negative zeta-potential of - 16.6 ± 2.1 mV. The phospholipid complex significantly improved (4.2-fold) the solubility of CA. In vitro and ex vivo dissolution studies of the formulated CA-PC revealed a significantly higher release compared with the pure CA. The pharmacokinetic study of CA-PC in rats demonstrated a significant increase (4.79-fold) in oral bioavailability when compared with pure CA as well. Additionally, a significant improvement in serum lipid profile, serum liver biomarker enzyme levels and, restoration of hepatic tissue architecture to normal, in high-fat diet (HFD) induced hyperlipidemic model was obtained upon CA-PC administration when compared with pure CA. These findings indicated that CA-PC would serve as an effective and promising formulation for CA delivery with improved antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective activity.Graphical abstract.In the current study, the elastic and plastic properties of the 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 pristine and transition metal (TM)-doped antimonene are studied through DFT calculations. Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn atoms are selected as the doping atoms. It was observed that Young's and bulk moduli of both 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 pristine structure would decrease while affected by the doping atoms. The highest reduction in the Young's and bulk moduli of the 2 × 2 nanosheets has occurred in the Cr- and Ti-doped structures, respectively, while the same reduction was observed in the V- and Ti-doped structures in the 3 × 3 nanosheets. In addition, it was shown that all of the investigated structures express isotropic behavior since the obtained Young's moduli of these nanostructures have negligible difference along armchair and zigzag directions. Finally, the loading is further increased to investigate the plastic behavior of these structures. The results showed that except for 2 × 2 Sc-doped structure under biaxial loading, the yield strain of all doped nanosheets would decrease under uniaxial and biaxial loadings. The highest reduction in the yield strain of the 2 × 2 nanosheets under biaxial loading has been observed in Cu-doped nanosheet while in 3 × 3 nanosheets, the highest reduction has occurred in Cu-, Fe-, and Zn-doped nanosheets under the same condition. As for the yield strain of the doped 2 × 2 nanosheets while affected by the uniaxial loading, Cu- and Zn-doped nanosheets experienced the highest reduction while in 3 × 3 nanosheets, the highest reduction has been observed for Cr-doped nanosheet under the same condition.Multiple sclerosis (MS) as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) is thought to be caused by the abnormal induction of immune responses. To facilitate their simultaneous transport in the bloodstream, we synthesized, for the first time, liposomes (LIPUFU) containing 5-FU in the aqueous core and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) at a ratio of 12 in the lipid bilayer. LIPUFU werestable with uniform size of 154 ± 4 nm, PDI of 0.19 ± 0.03 and zeta potential of -41 ± 2 mV. They contained 557 ± 210 μmol/l DHA, 1467 ± 362 μmol/l EPA, and 9.8 ± 1.1 μmol/l 5-FU. Control liposomes without (LIP) or with only 5-FU (LIFU) or n-3 PUFAs (LIPU) were produced in a similar way. The effects of these different liposomal formulations on the cell cycle, growth, and apoptosis were evaluated in two human colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines differing in sensitivity to 5-FU, using fluorescence-activated cell sorting analyses. LIPUFU were more cytotoxic than LIP, LIFU, and LIPU in both LS174T (p53+/+, bax-/-) and HT-29 (p53-/0, bax+/+) cell lines. Similar to LIFU, LIPUFU increased the percentage of cells in S phase, apoptosis, and/or necrosis. The cytotoxic potential of LIPUFU was confirmed in vivo by tumor growth inhibition in the chicken chorioallantoic membrane model. These results suggest that LIPUFU could be considered to facilitate the simultaneous transport of 5-FU and n-3 PUFAs to the tumor site, in particular in case of CRC liver metastases.High-altitude cold habitats of the Karakoram are rarely explored for their bacterial community characterization and metabolite productions. In the present study, bacterial communities in ice, water, and sediments of Batura Glacier were investigated using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. Twenty-seven cold-adapted bacterial strains (mostly psychrotrophic) were isolated using R2A, Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), and Luria-Bertani (LB) media, at 4 °C and 15 °C. Most of the isolates exhibited growth at a wide range of temperature (4-35 °C), pH (5-12), and salinity (1-6%). Among the bacterial isolates, 52% were identified as Gram-positive and the remaining 48% represented as Gram-negative. The results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that all the culturable bacteria belonged to 3 major phylogenetic groups, i.e., Actinobacteria (48%), Bacteroidetes (26%), and Proteobacteria (22%), while Flavobacterium (26%), Arthrobacter (22%), and Pseudomonas (19%) were represented as the dominant genera. In this study, we used RT-qPCR to determine the pattern of expression of cel12A under different carbon sources and initial ambient pH. Among the carbon sources examined, rice straw triggered a greater increase in the expression of cel12A than 1% lactose or 0.1% glucose, indicating specific induction by rice straw. In contrast, cel12A was repressed in the presence of glucose even when combined with this inducer. The proximity of 2 adjacent 5'-CTGGGGTCTGGGG-3' CreA consensus target sites to the translational start site of cel12A strongly suggests that the carbon catabolite repression observed is directly mediated by CreA.
