The results showed that the follicular pool was highest in the control group but higher in the 4-HC + let-7a group than the 4-HC group. DNA-damage/apoptosis ratios were higher in all 4-HC-exposed groups compared to control but were reduced in the 4-HC + let-7a group. In addition, the post-transplantation oocyte in vitro maturation rate was higher in the 4-HC + let-7a group compared to the 4-HC group, suggesting better oocyte quality. These results provide new information regarding the beneficial effects of let-7a replacement against chemotherapy-induced ovarian damage and open new perspectives for future in vivo applications.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a progressive, idiopathic, fibro-obliterative disease of the intra and extrahepatic biliary tree. If untreated, it results in severe liver injury and death. The etiology and pathogenesis of BA remain unclear. Few studies have investigated the association between maternal illness/drug use and the occurrence of BA in offspring.

We used the data from the Birth Certificate Application of Taiwan and linked to National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database for the years 2004 to 2017 (N = 1,647,231) on 2022/03, and identified BA cases according to diagnosis and procedure code. A total of 285 BA cases were identified.

Mothers with type 2 diabetes mellitus and non-dependent drug abuse had higher rates having BA children than non-BA children, with an odds ratio of 2.17 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.04-4.53) and OR 3.02 (95% CI = 1.34-6.78), respectively.

These results support the notion that BA occurrence is related to maternal reasons. Further studies should be designed to identify additional maternal and pregnancy risk factors and to understand the underlying pathophysiology.

1. The occurrence of offspring biliary atresia may be related to maternal illness/drug use. 2. Maternal drug abuse and type 2 diabetes mellitus pose a high risk for offspring biliary atresia. 3. If maternal etiology is found, biliary atresia might be a preventable disease.

Diagnosis is most effective at an early stage of the disease, as patients can start early treatment to delay progressive cognitive decline. While other diagnostic methods for dementia are available, electroencephalography (EEG) is noninvasive, more accessible, and less complicated than other biomarker measurements. Moreover, it may be orders of magnitude less expensive, thereby offering the possibility of low-cost mass screening. This paper presents a novel digital signal processing method called cardinal spline empirical mode decomposition (CS-EMD) for EEG processing. This new method uses a different signal envelope interpolation algorithm to separate EEG signals into constituent components, called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), with better signal decomposition properties than classical empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The IMFs obtained from the new method are then used to compute longitudinal and transversal synchrony measures, which are explored as features for healthy and dementia classification using a support vector machine (SVM). The performance of the proposed method is studied on a publicly available EEG dataset. The results show that using multiple synchrony measures of both longitudinal and transversal EEG channels on five IMFs produces the best classification result of 90% accuracy, 96.67% specificity, 83.33% sensitivity, and 96.15% precision, outperforming the classical EMD method and various other approaches. This new, data-driven CS-EMD method shows good potential as a dementia screening tool. CS-EMD may also be applied in processing other nonlinear and nonstationary biosignals.

To investigate whether completion of concurrent chemotherapy (CCT) improves overall survival (OS) of patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and to identify predictors of non-completion of CCT.

Data of ESCC patients treated with definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy from January 2012 to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. CCT completion was defined as receiving recommended cycles with at most 25% dose reduction. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was applied to adjust unbalanced covariates between groups. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify factors affecting CCT completion.

Of the 487 patients in the study, 194 patients (39.8%) had completed CCT. The majority (90.7%) had stage III-IV disease. Three-year OS rate was significantly higher in the completion group than non-completion group (35.4% vs. 30.3%; p = 0.025). Multivariate Cox analysis showed CCT completion was independently associated with longer OS (p = 0.005). The independent risk factors for CCT non-completion were weekly CCT regimen [odds ratio (OR) = 4.35, 95% CI 2.26-8.37; p < 0.001], clinical target volume (CTV)-elective nodal irradiation (ENI) (OR = 3.86, 95% CI 2.41-6.18; p < 0.001), planning target volume (PTV)/50 cm

(OR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.02-1.16; p = 0.017), age (OR = 1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.07, p = 0.011), and tumor in middle/lower esophagus (OR = 1.59, 95% CI 1.05-2.43, p = 0.030).

CCT completion can provide superior OS for ESCC patients treated with definitive CCRT. Weekly CCT regimen, CTV-ENI, PTV, older age, and tumor location are independent predictors of non-completion of CCT.

Upon perception of environmental stress multiple copies of RsbT are released from the surface of the stressosome. Free RsbT activates downstream proteins to elicit a global cellular response, such as the activation of the general stress response in Gram-positive bacteria. The molecular events triggering RsbT release from the stressosome surface remain poorly understood. Here we present the map of Listeria innocua RsbR1/RsbS complex at resolutions of 3.45 Å for the STAS domain core in icosahedral symmetry and of 3.87 Å for the STAS domain and N-terminal sensors in D2 symmetry, respectively. The structure reveals a conformational change in the STAS domain linked to phosphorylation in RsbR. Docking studies indicate that allosteric RsbT binding to the conformationally flexible N-terminal sensor domain of RsbR affects the affinity of RsbS towards RsbT. Our results bring to focus the molecular events within the stressosome complex and further our understanding of this ubiquitous signaling hub.The purpose of this study was to evaluate cartilage quality after internal fixation of osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT) using second-look arthroscopies and MRIs. see more Thirty-four patients underwent internal fixation of OLTs involving large bone fragments. Twenty-one of these patients underwent second-look arthroscopies and 23 patients underwent MRIs postoperatively. The arthroscopic findings were assessed using the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) grading system, and the MRI findings were evaluated using the Magnetic Resonance Observation of Cartilage Repair Tissue (MOCART) score. Five of the patients who underwent second-look arthroscopies showed normal cartilage, 12 showed nearly normal cartilage, 3 showed abnormal cartilage, and 1 showed severely abnormal cartilage, according to the overall ICRS repair grades. All the patients who achieved bone fragment union showed normal, or nearly normal cartilage upon second-look arthroscopy. The ICRS and MOCART scores were significantly higher for the patients with bone fragment union compared to those with nonunion (ICRS scores 10.3 ± 1.5 vs. 6.0 ± 2.0, p  less then  0.001, MOCART score 88.3 ± 10.0 vs. 39.0 ± 20.4, p  less then  0.001). Low signal intensities of the bone fragments on preoperative T1-weighted MRIs were not associated with nonunion (Fisher's exact test, p = 0.55), and the signal intensities increased postoperatively to levels similar to the underlying talus when bone union was achieved. Second-look arthroscopy and MRI showed normal, or nearly normal, cartilage after internal fixation of OLTs when bone union was achieved. The nonunion of bone fragments resulted in inferior cartilage quality.

This study aimed to determine the incidence of pelvic fistulas in cervical cancer patients treated with bevacizumab in Japanese clinical practice.

A post-marketing surveillance (PMS) study was conducted between June 2016 and February 2018 to survey physicians who treated advanced or recurrent cervical cancer patients with bevacizumab (according to the product label). The clinical/treatment status of patients with pelvic fistulas was assessed in an additional retrospective case series study.

142 patients were included in the PMS study (median age 51years; 66.9% squamous cell carcinoma; 66.2% recurrent cervical cancer; 64.1% previous radiotherapy). Patients received a median of seven bevacizumab doses. Six patients, all of whom had a history of pelvic irradiation, developed seven fistulas (4.2%; 95% confidence interval, 1.56-8.96), and five patients had also undergone pelvic surgery. The case series study of the patients who developed fistulas indicated that three patients had high cumulative bladder and en after careful evaluation, should be considered. This study conducted a comprehensive characterization and analyses on the fire-resistant behaviors of novel fungal fibers grown with substrate containing Silica (Si) source at multiple scales. At micro-scale, the results of SEM showed that silica affected the physiological activities of fungi, with the extent of effects depending upon its concentration. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra displayed the existence of Si-O-C chemical bonds in fungal fibers grown with Si source, indicating that Si source becomes a part of the structure of fungal fibers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) of fungal fibers exhibit an early thermal decomposition of non-combustible components, which will potentially help release the thermal stress and mitigation of spalling when used in concrete. Compared with polypropylene (PP) fibers, fungal fibers have a lower thermal degradation rate, a higher residual weight, a lower heat release peak temperature, and less total heat of combustion;lease and heat transfer. FTIR spectra of residual char demonstrated that fungal fibers grown with Si source formed more stable chemical bonds with higher heat of chemical bond formation, contributing to improved thermal stability and fire resistance. Therefore, compared with traditional fibers used for fiber reinforced concrete, incorporating the new natural grown fibers will potentially further improve the fire resistance of concrete and mitigate the concrete spalling.
