(4) Conclusion Since CTS in childhood is predominantly caused by an underlying disorder, a thorough evaluation and search for a causative condition is recommended in this age group.Health status and health behavior change during the transition from school to university. However, it is still unclear whether these changes occur at specific points in time, and whether these changes are stable. Therefore, our aim was to conduct a pilot test on biographical mapping (BM) for the first time in this research area in order to map the trajectories of the health status of university students over time. This enabled us to also test the practicability of BM, and to assess the agreement of the findings of BM with those of a standardized questionnaire. We included 30 fourth-year university students. First, they filled in a standardized questionnaire on their sociodemographic information, current health status, and health status compared with that for their final year of school. Second, they filled in a BM grid that allows for drawing the changes in health status that have taken place over the transition period. The health status changed during the transition (e.g., slight decline in general subjective health), and was related to specific events before and after the transition (e.g., examinations), showing that all health variables were not stable over time. The findings of BM were also reflected in the standardized questionnaire. Using BM revealed the changes in health during a six-year-period, including the school-university transition. The identified changes in health during transition and at specific time points underline that not only assistance before the transition, but also psychological support during studies, seems to be important for the health promotion of students. Besides this, BM seems to be a useful, although time-consuming, instrument for which the results were similar to those in the questionnaire.Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors are present early in life in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), consequently cardiovascular morbidity presents in early adulthood. However, risk factors of CVD have been rarely addressed in children with early stage of CKD. This study included 63 children and adolescents aged 8- to 18 years-old with CKD stage G1-G4. Cardiovascular assessments consisted of 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), arterial stiffness index, and echocardiography. We also applied dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning to analyze percentage body fat (PBF), lean body mass index (LBMI), fat mass index (FMI), and the android to gynoid fat ratio (A/G ratio). Up to 63.5% of CKD children had abnormal changes in BP detected by ABPM. CKD children with abnormal ABPM were older, had higher numbers of CKD stage G2 to G4, hyperuricemia, obesity, and higher FMI z-score and A/G ratio compared to individuals with normal ABPM (all p less then 0.05). Among these factors, only FMI z-score showed an independent association with abnormal ABPM using multivariate logistic regression analysis (p = 0.037). Our data highlight that body fat plays a key role for an abnormal ABPM in CKD children. The assessment of FMI may have clinical utility in discriminating CV risk in children and adolescents with early stages of CKD.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not only put our national health systems to the test, but it also notably hit the economy, the society and the psychology of the people. Our pets have been subjected to the pandemic related stress too. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the stress induced on domestic dogs resulted in an increase of dog bites in the paediatric population.

A retrospective study was conducted on all patients admitted to our paediatric emergency department for dog bite from January 2014 and December 2020. We compared the total mean dog bites of the years 2014-2019 and the mean number per single month with the respective 2020 data. The bites were divided between bites from family dogs and bites from stranger dogs. Continuous data were analysed using single sample

test while categorical values with chi-squared test, considering statistically significant a

value < 0.05.

From January 2014 to December 2019, we recorded a mean of 41 ± 5.9 dog bites (range 30-46) of which a mean 13 ± lication of Steri Strips (78%). On the other hand, in 2020, 21 wounds needed to be sutured (70%), and 9 received just Steri Strips application (41%). The frequency distribution of the treatments required (stitches vs. Steri Strips) between the 2014 to 2019 period and the 2020 period was statistically significant (

< 0.0001).

The number of family dog bites in children increased in 2020, especially during the lockdown period. Paediatricians should pay a lot of attention now more than ever to educate parents on the importance of always supervising children who are playing with dogs.

The aim of our study was to determine the relationship between parental attitudes, the development of psychological resilience, and systematic medication adherence in a group of adolescents after kidney and liver transplantation. The analysis included the results obtained from 96 families. selleck compound A total of 52 patients after kidney transplantation and 44 patients after liver transplantation, aged 12-18 years and their parents were examined. The types of parental attitudes were assessed using the Parental Attitude Scale. The patient's resilience was determined with the Resiliency Assessment Scale. The MMAS-8 was used to assess the regularity of medication-taking behavior. A total of 61% of the patients in the study group displayed high levels of psychological resilience. The analyses showed a positive correlation between resilience and the systematic taking of medication by the patients. Moreover, it was found that the analyzed link between psychological resilience on the degree of the regularity of medication intake was enhanced by a specific type of parental attitude. The obtained results confirm the importance of psychological resources in developing better disease control. The relationship between the type of parental attitudes and medication adherence indicates the need to take into account the family context during the child's treatment.

Dimeglio (DimS) and Pirani (PirS) scores are the most common scores used in congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the interobserver reliability of these scores and how clinical practice can influence the clinical outcome of clubfoot through the DimS and Pirs.

Fifty-four feet were assessed by six trained independent observers through the DimS and PirS three consultants (OS), and three residents (RS) divided into three pediatric orthopaedic surgeons (PeO) and three non-pediatric orthopaedic surgeons (NPeO).

The PirS and DimS Scores were strongly correlated. In the same way, OS and RS, PirS, and DimS scores were strongly correlated, and the interobserver reliability ranked "good" in the comparison between PeO and NPeO. In fully trained paediatric orthopaedic surgeons, an "excellent" interobserver reliability was found but was only "good" in the NPeO cohort.

In conclusion, after careful preparation, at least six months of observation of children with CTEV, PirS and DimS proved to be valid in terms of clinical evaluation. However, more experience with CTEV leads to a better clinical evaluation.

Patients who have Frasier syndrome develop nephrotic syndrome (NS) featuring focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) that is resistant to steroid treatment in early childhood. Male patients can have female external genitalia (pseudo-hermaphroditism) at birth and develop gonado-blastoma in their adolescence. Frasier syndrome is caused by mutations in the splice donor site at intron 9 of the Wilms' tumor WT1 gene; these mutations result in an imbalanced ratio of WT1 protein isoforms and affect the development of the urogenital tract, podocyte function, and tumor suppression. Here, we report on a patient with long-term refractory NS who developed a malignant mixed germ cell tumor arising in a gonado-blastoma of the ovary 8 years after the onset of proteinuria.Acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHOM) is a rare pathology in pediatric population. The aim of this study is to analyse the epidemiological data and the management, compared to European Society for Paediatric Infectious Disease (ESPID, European Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases) guidelines 2017 of 216 children with AHOM, divided in three cohorts (neonatal-onset osteomyelitis, those with vertebral involvement and other types of osteomyelitis). We conducted a retrospective single center study, evaluating data from all the children (aged 0-18 years) consecutively admitted to the Meyer Children's Hospital, during a period of ten years (1 January 2010-31 December 2019). Isolation of pathogen was possible in 65 patients and S. aureus was the most frequently involved (43/65 children). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI, magnetic resonance imaging) was performed in 201/216 cases and was compatible with osteomyelitis in 185/201 of these children (92.03%). In the neonatal-onset osteomyelitis group the percentage of diagnostic ultrasound for osteomyelitis was 36.36% significantly higher than the other groups. The median duration of total antibiotic therapy was 37.5 days. In total, 186/199 children recovered without complications. The present study delineates three heterogeneous cohorts of patients. S. aureus is confirmed as the first pathogen for isolation in all three groups analysed. MRI represent a gold standard for diagnosis. Longer duration of antibiotics treatment was performed in neonatal and spondylodiscitis group, compared to the other types of osteomyelitis.Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is widely used in pediatric patients as a successful curative therapy for life-threatening conditions. The treatment is intensive, with risks of serious complications and lethal outcomes. This study aimed to provide insight into current data on the place and cause of death of transplanted children, the available specialized pediatric palliative care services (SPPCS), and what services HSCT professionals feel the SPPCS team should provide. First, a retrospective database analysis on the place and cause of death of transplanted pediatric HSCT patients was performed. Second, a survey was performed addressing the availability of and views on SPPCS among HSCT professionals. Database analysis included 233 patients of whom the majority died in-hospital 38% in the pediatric intensive care unit, 20% in HSCT units, 17% in other hospitals, and 14% at home or in a hospice (11% unknown). For the survey, 98 HSCT professionals from 54 centers participated. Nearly all professionals indicated that HSCT patients should have access to SPPCS, especially for pain management, but less than half routinely referred to this service at an early stage.
