Eosinophilic otitis media is an intractable otitis media and a fairly common middle ear disease. However, the pathogenesis of eosinophilic otitis media is obscure.
To observe the pathological and ultrastructural changes of the Eustachian tube mucosal epithelium in rats with eosinophilic otitis media and further explore the pathogenesis of eosinophilic otitis media.
Animals were intraperitoneally injected with 2000 mg ovalbumin and 100 mg aluminum hydroxide (alum) on day 0, followed by 100 mg ovalbumin and 100 mg alum injection on days 7 and 14. Next they were topically boosted by daily application of 100 mg ovalbumin solution via nasal drip and intratympanic injection of 0.1 mL ovalbumin (1000 mg/mL) in the right ear (group A, n = 80) and 0.1 mL saline in the left ear as control (group B, n = 80) starting on day 21 and continuing for 14 days. The temporal bones were dissected on the 35th, 38th, 41st and 43rd day separately under anesthesia. Scanning electron microscopy, hematoxylin-eosin and toluidine bc otitis media.
In the eosinophilic otitis media model, allergy caused significant changes in pathology and morphology of the Eustachian tube mucosa, affecting the normal function of the Eustachian tube which played an important role in the occurrence and development of eosinophilic otitis media.
In patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, BPPV; a torsional-vertical down beating positioning nystagmus can be elicited in the supine straight head-hanging position test or in the Dix-Hallpike test to either side. This type of nystagmus can be explained by either an anterior canal BPPV or by an apogeotropic variant of the contralateral posterior canal BPPV Until now all the therapeutic maneuvers that have been proposed address only one possibility, and without first performing a clear differential diagnosis between them.
To propose a new maneuver for torsional-vertical down beating positioning nystagmus with a clear lateralization that takes into account both possible diagnoses (anterior canal-BPPV and posterior canal-BPPV).
A prospective cohort study was conducted on 157 consecutive patients with BPPV. The new maneuver was performed only in those with torsional-vertical down beating positioning nystagmus with clear lateralization.
Twenty patients (12.7%) were diagnosed with a torsional-vn anterior canal-BPPV, and in shifting in a controlled way the posterior canal-BPPV cases of the contralateral side into a geotropic-posterior-BPPV successfully treated during the followup visit. Moreover, this new maneuver helped in the differential diagnosis between anterior canal-BPPV and a contralateral posterior canal-BPPV.
Quantify the on-field movements, heart rate and perceived exertion (RPE) of lead referees during Rugby World Cup matches.
Descriptive, observational.
On-field movements (distance, average speed, high-speed running [>5ms
]), heart rate and RPE of 11 lead referees were assessed during 29 Rugby World Cup (Knockout and Pool) matches. Average speed and heart rate were assessed using rolling average methods (1-10min epochs). Linear mixed models and Cohen's effect size (d) were used to compare match variables between Pool and Knockout matches.
Referees covered on average 6674±566m (65.8±6.3mmin
), with 586±290m in high-speed running. Mean heart rate was 146±9 beatsmin
, summated-heart-rate-zones was 235±36AU, and sRPE load was 577±205AU. A large reduction (d=1.40) in high-speed running distance and moderate reductions in average speed over 1 (d=0.81) and 2min (d=0.83) epochs were found during Knockout, compared to Pool matches. Differences between Pool and Knockout matches on other measures of referee e practitioners with knowledge to assist in preparation of rugby union referees for future Rugby World Cup competitions.
To determine (1) the association between lifetime diagnosed concussion and lower extremity musculoskeletal injury (LE-MSI) among community rugby union players and (2) the sex specific risk of LE-MSI given concussion history among males and females.
Retrospective survey.
1037 (59.0% male, (612/1037), age 31.6 ± 11.3 years) rugby players (10.1 ± 8.1 years played) completed an online survey to ascertain injury history. A chi-squared test of association was performed between concussion and LE-MSI; significant outcomes were followed-up with an odds ratio. A binary logistic regression with any LE-MSI (yes/no) as the outcome and concussion (yes/no) and sex (male/female) as predictors was performed to determine if there was a sex by concussion interaction.
There was an overall significant association between concussion and any LE-MSI(χ(1) = 13.055, p < 0.001, OR = 2.30 [95%CI 1.45, 3.65]). Both male (OR = 2.21) and females (OR = 2.49) had significant associations for concussion and LE-MSI, but there were nize a conservative return to play protocols following concussion.Reducing inequity in access to health care and disparity in health outcomes remain key objectives in cardiovascular medicine. Echocardiography is often the primary diagnostic tool used to detect cardiovascular disease (CVD), and relies on comparison with published reference ranges to appropriately detect pathology. Our understanding of the contribution of age, sex and ethnicity to quantification of cardiac size is improving, but cardiovascular disease management guidelines have yet to evolve. While recently, sex, age and ethnicity-specific reference values have been produced, treatment thresholds in many clinical guidelines do not differentiate between sexes. see more As a result, in order to reach management thresholds, women are often required to have more severe pathology. In order to reduce potential disadvantage to women, future research efforts should be directed to develop more personalised treatment approaches by identification of sex-appropriate management thresholds.Increased heme levels, anemia, and desaturation occur during infection. We aimed to compare the levels of heme, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), ferritin, and bilirubin in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients at different saturation levels. Heme and HO-1 enzyme levels significantly increased in the low SpO2 group, but further studies are required.
