Navistar’s continued changes by relocating the gear train to the rear of the engine and reinforcing for the bottom end. The crankshaft main and rod bearing surfaces were treated to an induction-hardening process and the crankshaft itself was held in place with a plate. The key to the VT 365’s increased performance, despite tighter emission controls, rests on several components. First is the Electronic Variable Response Turbocharger (EVRT), which provides improved throttle response and peak torque capability at lower rpm levels. Second, it is equipped with Electro-Hydraulic Generation Two (G2) fuel injection technology, which is based on a low-pressure common rail fuel system. Finally, Intuitive Shift controllers allow for smoother driving to compensate for the use of cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology, which cuts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. One key component to the 7.3-liter Power Stroke and the Navistar T444E is the HEUI system, which stands for Hydraulically Activated, Electronically Controlled Unit Injector.

Downwind of the turbo on a 6.7L Power Stroke, the cold-side intercooler pipe—which routes boost from the engine’s air-to-water intercooler toward the heads—is well-known for failing. The factory piece is infamous for becoming brittle over time, often cracks under boost, and some of them even explode. It’s a common failure for both ’11-’16 engines and ’17-current versions (as well as in both modified and completely stock engines), and when it strikes you’ve got a giant boost leak.
The remedy to this problem is installing a coolant circuit filtration system, which should catch nasty particles before they plug the oil cooler. As I said before, there is a fix for this, and it’s tossing the factory head bolts in the trash and replacing them with stronger studs (above), hopefully putting blown gaskets in your rearview mirror. As I said earlier, the 7.3-liter Power Stroke is known for relative bulletproof reliability in stock form. Tuners have also found the engine to be receptive to taking on more power, too.

Some searching of the web shows you can get newer 6.0-equipped trucks for a similar price to older 7.3s with more miles. Since we’re talking about oil, let’s look at the injectors. Oil pressurized as high as 3,600 PSI enters the injector through an electronically-actuated spool valve. The oil-actuated injector fires fuel into the cylinder at 26,000 PSI, 5,000 PSI better than the outgoing 7.3 engine. There are a lot of parts that can fail related to the injectors. You need low-pressure diesel fuel, a 48-volt, 20-amp coil to operate the spool valve, and high-pressure oil that hopefully isn’t blazing hot.

I have a friend with a rather crusty F-350 with the 7.3 Navistar that he used to use to haul a horse trailer but now is the Saturday “go to Home Depot” truck. This is his first one he’s bought himself, and he likes it a fair bit, even if it has been a bit problematic. All of this sounds scary, but for some people it’s worth it. In 2020, I owned a Ford E-350 van with a 6.0-liter Power Stroke.
Yet, my van, which was stock, still drove on its original head gaskets and even still had its emissions equipment intact. It got 18 mpg with me behind the wheel — good compared to my friend with a stock 7.3 Power Stroke that got 13 mpg on a good day. Sadly, the van was detuned compared to Super Duty trucks and made 235 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque. But it still made that glorious diesel soundtrack so I didn’t care one bit.
Sadly, the 6.0’s oil cooler is known for plugging up, which has a cascading effect of allowing the oil in all impacted components to reach dangerous levels. The resulting temps can kill expensive components and cause a catastrophic failure. DrivingLine notes that around 90 percent of 6.0 EGR cooler failures start with a plugged oil cooler.
If you like options, there are both factory and aftermarket solutions for the OEM ’11-’14 6.7L Power Stroke turbo. Going the factory route, you can install a ’15-’19 unit, the Garrett GT37, essentially using 100-percent OEM, second-generation engine parts (SPE Motorsport’s retrofit install kit is pictured here). The GT37 retains VGT functionality but sports a bigger turbine wheel and a larger, single compressor wheel. It sees lower shaft speeds and rarely overspeeds. The aftermarket path typically points toward the use of a fixed geometry turbo, and namely one of the many popular off-the-shelf BorgWarner S300 or S400’s.
Several loose rocker arms, loose pushrods, low pushrods(1 inch gap to rocker arms), several pushrods almost off their valves. When time permits(shop very busy this week)I am going to remove the VC. Have to do it with only a partial cab lift as per service manager. Bruno says it has zero physical compression, if the ex valves were stuck closed he'd still have compression. I'm thinking something more sinister, sounds like the rt VC is coming off for a look.

Ford used what essentially was a cardboard “bag” attached to the receiver/dryer in the AC system. The cardboard would break down over time, and the desiccant would cycle through the AC system and corrode it from the inside out. We just replaced the turbo earlier this year after its impeller decided to emulate a grenade. We were able to replace it without lifting the cab.
Tuner Required – Removal of the DPF, CAT, SCR, and/or DOC involves removing and eliminating emission related sensors. I only bought them because of the great price and wasn’t expecting much, but when I opened them up and saw the size, quality and construction of them it blew me away. Operating it under any circumstances required earmuffs … and good earmuffs at that. Think about the heavily modified trucks and tractors you see at pulling events. The amount of pressure they “exhaust” is extraordinary – way more than a normal farm tractor or pickup would create. A muffler on those beasts would end up heading for the sky (or scarier – the spectators).
Unfortunately, the cylinder pressure under the head is a lot, and has been found to stretch the stock bolts, leading to an eventual blown head gasket. Reportedly, this happens most often with modified engines, but has happened with stock engines as well. It put Ford back into the diesel truck power wars, and its EGR system satisfied emissions regulations. The variable geometry turbo was also great, allowing for hard power early on and throughout the powerband. Unfortunately, problems started getting reported in 2003 while these engines were still new. International Harvester was even one of the first American companies to put a diesel engine in a light-duty pickup truck.
Starting with the worst, we begin with the 6.7L Power Stroke’s CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. The twin-piston Bosch pump, which is responsible for pressurizing fuel as high as 30,000 psi, is notorious for self-destructing. And when it comes apart, metal debris flows out to the fuel rails, and is often sent through the engine’s expensive piezoelectric injectors. Worse yet, the fuel system’s return circuit is also contaminated, with the fuel tank, fuel supply (and return) lines and even the lift pump requiring replacement and/or cleaning. It’s a failure that, while it may only occur on 1-percent of all engines, costs upward of $10,000 to fix. Since replacing 6.7 powerstroke straight pipe Stroke, and the problematic 6.0L Power Stroke before that, Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke has been a significant force in the world of diesel trucks.
The new engine had to comply with stricter emissions, but it still made more power out of the factory than its predecessor. Unfortunately, the 6.0 Power Stroke would encounter a long list of issues and give tuners even larger headaches. The 6.0 carries such a reputation today that it’s sometimes called the “6.Blow” and you can sometimes find newer trucks with the 6.0 selling for cheaper than an older truck with a 7.3. If you’re loyal to the Blue Oval, the Navistar/Ford 7.3-liter Power Stroke is a legendary engine. It’s been over two decades since the last 7.3 was built, yet enthusiasts continue to pay tens of thousands to own an example of one of greatest diesel engines of all time. Sure, a stock 7.3-liter doesn’t make a ton of power compared to today’s trucks, but these are engines that can last longer than the metal bodies in which they’re packaged.

These up pipes fit perfectly, no trouble at all and look awesome. This kit works perfectly for these trucks, not too loud but also still has a good grumble. That was a couple more thousand, I don’t even remember, but by the time I finished with that I was ready to be done with the truck. I was starting to measure my weekly operating costs by the maintenance bills instead of the fuel bills. I wish I would have bought a slightly older truck with the 7.3. Next, we have the fuel injection control module (FICM), the computer responsible for opening and closing the spool valves and thus, getting fuel to the cylinders. This module is the one sending 48-volt pulses to the coils and while its lower than the 100 to 120 volts utilized by the 7.3, any low-voltage problems with the truck could cause running issues.

Another kit, offered by H&S Motorsports, uses a stainless-reinforced, multi-ply silicone hose as a direct replacement—a piece that’s rated for high heat and triple-digit boost. Some aftermarket cold-side intercooler pipe replacement systems also feature an adapter assembly for the factory throttle body.
Powdered-metal connecting rods also made a return in the 6.0. These rods were panned during their short life in the 7.3, but they found a good home in the 6.0 engine. As DrivingLine explains, the 7.3’s engine revved low and submitted a lot of torque to the rods.
Not only has it been ultra-reliable (helping to revive the Power Stroke brand), but it’s also offered class-leading power figures for much of its production run. However, that doesn’t mean Ford’s V8 diesel is bulletproof. Only thing it needs is better installation instructions. I would highly recommend and will purchase from again in the future.

Loudness can be a pro or a con depending on your taste and application. Sometimes you just need or want exhaust that is loud. Straight pipes can usually deliver loudness, but at the price of good sound quality. This information was taken from an affidavit by one of Ford’s own officials in a lawsuit it filed against Navistar. Despite this testimony, Ford later denied engine problems when it was being sued over the Navistar engine. One email presented during trial was dated five months before Margeson purchased his truck.
The powertrain control module commands an injection event and the injector driver module triggers the injector solenoids. When this happens, the solenoid pulls an internal poppet valve off of its seat, allowing high-pressure oil into the injector. That oil comes courtesy of a high-pressure oil circuit charged by the high-pressure oil pump. The HPOP sends high-pressure oil into the injectors, which forces a piston in the injector down, lifting a nozzle. The nozzle then opens and 3,000 psi of fuel pressure multiplies to 21,000 psi of fuel pressure in the cylinder. In theory, the 6.0 had the right ingredients to rise to stardom.
The kit fits every 6.7L Power Stroke produced to date, from ’11-’24. The choice of 4 inches and 5 inches is determined by customer needs. The price of 5 inches is higher, and the displacement and performance will be greatly improved.With or without Muffler?

Before CP4.2 pump failure took over as the 6.7L Power Stroke’s Achilles Heel, turbo death was arguably more common. On first-generation engines, the Garrett GT32 SST became infamous for overspeed failure. And even though it’s graced with an electronic wastegate, it isn’t enough to bleed off all the drive pressure created at those turbine speeds.

Any vehicle can have its muffler deleted- if it has one. Straight pipes can refer to muffler deletes, but they can also refer to removing everything in the exhaust system that isn’t pipe. This includes resonators and catalytic converters. Then one day I ran it down to almost E, truck never died, but a few days later I needed 6 injectors. It turns out the injectors are lubricated by the fuel… to the point that running it low, was enough to trash them. No one really explained what happened, so a few months later the same thing happened.

You'll probably still have to have the VC off to verify the valves are closed...... A damaged or stuck ipn intake will cause low compression and popping from the intake BUT exhaust valves not opening will cause a more severe pop noise from my experience. Some owners replace the variable geometry turbo with a fixed geometry turbo, conduct more frequent flushing of the oil cooling system, and clean the EGR system. There are a number of issues that plagued the 6.0 engine during parts of its life. Thankfully, time heals a lot of wounds, and there are now solutions to the engine’s infamous issues.
This one is purely up to preference and what you like. The only deciding factor for some in the dual vs single exhaust debacle is a dual exhaust system can be a little more costly. I put this together for a customer, for the millionth time, on which exhaust system is right for a 6.7 Powerstroke.
