Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs), as non-viral gene delivery vectors, are considered with lower immunogenic response, and safer and higher gene capacity than viral systems. In our previous study, a CPP peptide called RALA (arginine rich) presented desirable transfection efficacy and owns a potential clinic use. It is believed that histidine could enhance the endosome escaping ability of CPPs, yet RALA peptide contains only one histidine in each chain. In order to develop novel superior CPPs, by using RALA as a model, we designed a series of peptides named HALA (increased histidine ratio). Both plasmid DNA (pDNA) and siRNA transfection results on three cell lines revealed that the transfection efficacy is better when histidine replacements were on the C-terminal instead of on the N-terminal, and two histidine replacements are superior to three. By investigating the mechanism of endocytosis of the pDNA nanocomplexes, we discovered that there were multiple pathways that led to the process and caveolae played the main role. During the screening, we discovered a novel peptide-HALA2 of high cellular transfection efficacy, which may act as an exciting gene delivery vector for gene therapy. Our findings also bring new insights on the development of novel robust CPPs.The curing kinetics can influence the final macroscopic properties, particularly the three-point bending of the fiber-reinforced composite materials. In this research, the curing kinetics of commercially available glass fiber/epoxy resin prepregs were studied by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). 3-Methyladenine The curing kinetic parameters were obtained by fitting and the apparent activation energy Ea of the prepreg, the pre-exponent factor, and the reaction order value obtained. A phenomenological nth-order curing reaction kinetic model was established according to Kissinger equation and Crane equation. Furthermore, the optimal curing temperature of the prepregs was obtained by the T-β extrapolation method. A vacuum hot pressing technique was applied to prepare composite laminates. The pre-curing, curing, and post-curing temperatures were 116, 130, and 153 °C respectively. In addition, three-point bending was used to test the specimens' fracture behavior, and the surface morphology was analyzed. The results show that the differences in the mechanical properties of the samples are relatively small, indicating that the process settings are reasonable.LiMn2O4 (LMO) spinel cathode materials suffer from severe degradation at elevated temperatures because of Mn dissolution. In this research, monobasic sodium phosphate (NaH2PO4, P2) is examined as an electrolyte additive to mitigate Mn dissolution; thus, the thermal stability of the LMO cathode material is improved. The P2 additive considerably improves the cyclability and storage performances of LMO/graphite and LMO/LMO symmetric cells at 60 °C. We explain that P2 suppresses the hydrofluoric acid content in the electrolyte and forms a protective cathode electrolyte interphase layer, which mitigates the Mn dissolution behavior of the LMO cathode material. Considering its beneficial role, the P2 additive is a useful additive for spinel LMO cathodes that suffer from severe Mn dissolution. This paper analyzes the working behavior characteristics of a prestressed concrete transverse large cantilever continuous (PCTLCC) box girder bridge model based on structural stressing state theory and the numerical shape function (NSF) method. At first, the normalized generalized strain energy density (GSED) is established to model the stressing state of the bridge model. Subsequently, the Mann Kendall (M-K) criterion is applied to detect three characteristic loads, respectively, elastic-plastic branch load P (200 kN), failure load Q (300 kN), and progressive failure load H (340 kN), and the failure load Q is found to be the starting load of the damage process of the bridge model, rather than the ultimate load where the structure has been destroyed. Finally, the NSF method is adopted to interpolate the test data, and a detailed analysis for the variation characteristics of the working behavior of the bridge model under loads is performed based on the interpolation results. The characteristic load detection method and experimental data extension method for PCTLCC box girder bridge established in this study can provide valuable references for the design and analysis of such bridges.Radiation leakage is a serious problem in various technological applications. In this paper, radiation shielding characteristics of some natural rocks are elucidated. Mass attenuation coefficients (µ/ρ) of these rocks are obtained at different photon energies with the help of the EPICS2017 library. The obtained µ/ρ values are confirmed via the theoretical XCOM program by determining the correlation factor and relative deviation between both of these methods. Then, effective atomic number (Zeff), absorption length (MFP), and half value layer (HVL) are evaluated by applying the µ/ρ values. The maximum μ/ρ values of the natural rocks were observed at 0.37 MeV. At this energy, the Zeff values of the natural rocks were 16.23, 16.97, 17.28, 10.43, and 16.65 for olivine basalt, jet black granite, limestone, sandstone, and dolerite, respectively. It is noted that the radiation shielding features of the selected natural rocks are higher than that of conventional concrete and comparable with those of commercial glasses. Therefore, the present rocks can be used in various radiation shielding applications, and they have many advantages for being clean and low-cost products. In addition, we found that the EPICS2017 library is useful in determining the radiation shielding parameters for the rocks and may be used for further calculations for other rocks and construction building materials. The major cement composition ratios of alite, belite, aluminate, and ferrite have been calculated with the Bogue models until now. However, a recent comprehensive analysis based on various experimental data has revealed that the chemical composition of alite, belite, aluminate, and ferrite implemented by the Bogue models are slightly different than the experimental data, where small amounts of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 existing in alite and belite can change the prediction of cement composition. Since the amounts of cement compound are very important factors in determining the properties of concrete, improvement in the calculation would give more precise prediction for application usages such as climate change adaptable cement and high durable concrete manufacturing. For this purpose, 20 new models are proposed by modifying chemical compositions of the cement compounds and verified with the 50 experimental data sets. From the verification, the most accurate models are identified. The calculation using new models exhibit an accuracy improvement of approximately 5% compared to the Bogue models. Their applicable range is also presented. link2 The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.Deformation of metals has attracted great interest for a long time. However, the constitutive models for viscoplastic deformation at high strain rates are still under intensive development, and more physical mechanisms are expected to be involved. In this work, we employ the newly-proposed methodology of mesoscience to identify the mechanisms governing the mesoscale complexity of collective dislocations, and then apply them to improving constitutive models. Through analyzing the competing effects of various processes on the mesoscale behavior, we have recognized two competing mechanisms governing the mesoscale complex behavior of dislocations, i.e., maximization of the rate of plastic work, and minimization of the elastic energy. Relevant understandings have also been discussed. Extremal expressions have been proposed for these two mesoscale mechanisms, respectively, and a stability condition for mesoscale structures has been established through a recently-proposed mathematical technique, considering the compromise between the two competing mechanisms. Such a stability condition, as an additional constraint, has been employed subsequently to close a two-phase model mimicking the practical dislocation cells, and thus to take into account the heterogeneous distributions of dislocations. This scheme has been exemplified in three increasingly complicated constitutive models, and improves the agreements of their results with experimental ones.Semi-solid billets of GH3536 alloy were prepared by semi-solid isothermal treatment of wrought superalloy method. GH3536 samples were soaked at several semi-solid temperatures (1350 °C, 1360 °C, 1364 °C, and 1367 °C) for 5-120 min. The effects of temperature and soaking time on the microstructure of GH3536 billets were studied. The results indicated that the microstructure was affected by coalescence mechanism, Ostwald ripening mechanism, and breaking up mechanism. Semi-solid microstructure of GH3536 alloy was composed of spherical solid particles and liquid phases, and the liquid phases affected the microstructure greatly. At 1350 °C, the coalescence mechanism was dominant at the early stage of isothermal treatment, then the Ostwald ripening mechanism played a major role for the longer soaking times. At higher temperatures, the breaking up mechanism occurred to form large irregular grains and small spherical grains. As the heating continued, the Ostwald ripening mechanism was dominant. However, at 1364 °C and 1367 °C, the solid grains had irregular shapes and large sizes when the isothermal time was 120 min. link3 The optimum parameters for the preparation of GH3536 semi-solid billets were temperature of 1364-1367 °C and soaking time of 60-90 min. This paper presents the effort to reduce friction and wear of gear washers under low-speed and heavy-load conditions by designing the arrangement of surface textures. The influence of distributional parameters of textures on load-bearing capacity and friction coefficient of gear washers are studied numerically to obtain a preferable surface texturing design. Then, experimental tests were carried out to plot the Stribeck curves of the obtained texture arrangement compared with bare surface and another unoptimizable texture distribution arrangement to facilitate the verification of the simulation results. Theoretical predictions illustrate that the annular gear washers with partial surface texturing provide lower friction coefficients than bare washers. Textures having a sector angle of 20°, a coverage angle of 12°, a circumferential number of 8, and a radial number of 6 are selected as the final optimal surface texture distribution design. Experimental results confirm that the obtained texture arrangement moves the Stribeck curve towards the lower left, indicating thickening of oil film thickness and reduction in friction coefficient. In addition, the weight loss caused by wear is also reduced by the optimized texture design. In order to improve the wear resistance of CoCrNi alloy, TiC was introduced into the alloy and wear-resistant CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites were designed. The effects of TiC contents on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of CoCrNi matrix were investigated, respectively. It was found that the TiC produced dissolution and precipitation process in CoCrNi alloy, and a large number of needled and blocky TiC particles were precipitated in the composites. The compressive yield strength of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites increased with the increasing TiC content. Compared with the CoCrNi alloy, the yield strength of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites increased from 108 to 1371 MPa, and the corresponding strengthening mechanism contributed to the second phase strengthening. The wear resistance of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites was also greatly improved due to the strengthening of TiC. Compared with the CoCrNi alloy, the specific wear rate of CoCrNi/(TiC)1.0 alloy was reduced by about 77%. The wear resistance of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites was enhanced with the increasing content of TiC addition.
