XAAS-A1T has a DNA G + C content of 42.1 mol%. The orthoANI and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization values were markedly lower than the recommended threshold values of 96% and 70%. Phenotypic and genotypic data suggest that XAAS-A1T represents a novel species of the genus Litoribacter, for which we propose the name Litoribacter populi sp. nov. and XAAS-A1T (= CCTCC AB 2017159T = KCTC 62045T) as the type strain.

Despite growing evidence about myocardial injury in hospitalized COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, the mechanism behind this injury is only poorly understood and little is known about its association with SARS-CoV-2-mediated myocarditis. Furthermore, definite evidence of the presence and role of SARS-CoV-2 in cardiomyocytes in the clinical scenario is still lacking.

We histologically characterized myocardial tissue of 40 patients deceased with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first wave of the pandemic. Clinical data were also recorded and analyzed. In case of findings supportive of myocardial inflammation, histological analysis was complemented by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry for SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens and in situ RNA hybridization for the detection of viral genomes.

Both chronic and acute myocardial damage was invariably present, correlating with the age and comorbidities of our population. Myocarditis of overt entity was found in one case (2.5%). SARS-CoV-2 genome was not found in the cardiomyocytes of the patient with myocarditis, while it was focally and negligibly present in cardiomyocytes of patients with known viral persistence in the lungs and no signs of myocardial inflammation. The presence of myocardial injury was not associated with myocardial inflammatory infiltrates.

Fabry disease (FD), an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency in alfa-galactosidase A (α-Gal A) activity due to mutations in the GLA gene, has a prevalence of 0-1.69% in patients undergoing haemodialysis; however, its prevalence in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) Stages 1-5 is unknown.

Serum α-Gal A activity analysis and direct sequencing of GLA were used to screen for FD in 2122 male patients with CKD, including 1703 patients with CKD Stage 5D and 419 with CKD Stages 1-5. The correlation between serum α-Gal A activity and confounding factors in patients with CKD Stages 1-5 was evaluated.

FD prevalence rates in patients with CKD Stage 5D and CKD Stages 1-5 were 0.06% (1/1703) and 0.48% (2/419), respectively. A patient with CKD Stage 5D exhibited a novel GLA mutation, p.Met208Arg, whereas two patients with CKD Stages 1-5 had c.370delG and p.Met296Ile. p. Met208Arg caused moderate structural changes in the molecular surface region near the substituted amino acid residue but did not affect the catalytic residues Asp170 and Asp231 in α-Gal A. Serum α-Gal A activity in patients with CKD Stages 1-5 was inversely correlated with age (P < 0.0001) but directly correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (P < 0.0001).

Infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) induces a complex antibody response that varies by orders of magnitude between individuals and over time.

We developed a multiplex serological test for measuring antibodies to five SARS-CoV-2 antigens and the Spike proteins of seasonal coronaviruses. We measured antibody responses in cohorts of hospitalized patients and healthcare workers followed for up to eleven months after symptoms. A mathematical model of antibody kinetics was used to quantify the duration of antibody responses. Antibody response data were used to train algorithms for estimating time since infection.

One year after symptoms, we estimate that 36% (95% range 11%, 94%) of anti-Spike IgG remains, 31% (9%, 89%) anti-RBD IgG remains, and 7% (1%, 31%) anti-Nucleocapsid IgG remains. The multiplex assay classified previous infections into time intervals of 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-12 months. This method was validated using data from a sero-prevalence survey in France, demonstrating that historical SARS-CoV-2 transmission can be reconstructed using samples from a single survey.

Due to minimal culturing requirements, easily characterized wing pattern elements, and technical feasibility of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, V. cardui is emerging as a functional genomics model for diverse research programs. Here, we report a high-quality, annotated genome assembly of the V. cardui genome, generated using 84× coverage of PacBio long-read data, which we assembled into 205 contigs with a total length of 425.4 Mb (N50 = 10.3 Mb). The genome was very complete (single-copy complete Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs [BUSCO] 97%), with contigs assembled into presumptive chromosomes using synteny analyses. Our annotation used embryonic, larval, and pupal transcriptomes, and 20 transcriptomes across five different wing developmental stages. Gene annotations showed a high level of accuracy and completeness, with 14,437 predicted protein-coding genes. This annotated genome assembly constitutes an important resource for diverse functional genomic studies ranging from the developmental genetic basis of butterfly color pattern, to coevolution with diverse hostplants.

ART, widely used in Europe, accounts for 3.3% of births in France. The various studies of ART complications are fairly reassuring, showing relatively low overall complication rates but only few studies have used exhaustive national registers.

The cohort for this study was identified from the comprehensive French national hospital-discharge database and includes women under 50 years with a first oocyte retrieval (T0) in 2012-2017, classified in three population subgroups according to the indication for oocyte retrieval infertility (IF), oocyte donation (OD), and fertility preservation (FP). This study includes 156 916 women whose first oocyte retrieval occurred in 2012-2017 and 542 775 hS (116 vs 0) and bleeding (24 vs 0) were significantly higher after (vs before) retrieval.

The French national health data system, despite all its advantages, present some limitations such as the risk of coding errors. The unavailability of some personal information and the absence of consideration of risk factors prevented us from adjusting the risk. Finally, only complications resulting in hospitalization were analyzed which probably leads to their underestimation.

The use of medico-administrative bases will be a valuable tool in public health and will furnish a better overview of the complications. Further studies are needed to complete this analysis. Adding information on drugs would help to better define T0 and less severe complications.

The liquid-solid interactions have attracted broad interest since solid surfaces can either repel or attract fluids, configuring a wide spectrum of wetting states (from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity). Since the blood-artificial surface interaction of bileaflet mechanical heart valves essentially represents a liquid-solid interaction, we analysed the thrombogenicity of mechanical heart valve prostheses from innovative perspectives. The aim of the present study was to modify the surface wettability of standard St. Jude Medical Regent™ occluders.

Four pyrolytic carbon occluders were irradiated by means of ultra-short pulse laser, to create 4 different nanotextures (A-D), the essential prerequisite to achieve superhydrophobicity. The static surface wettability of the occluders was qualified by the contact angle (θ) of 2 µl of purified water, using the sessile drop technique. The angle formed between the liquid-solid and the liquid-vapour interface was the contact angle and was obtained by analysing the droplet images captured by a camera. The morphology of the occluders was characterized and analysed by a scanning electron microscope at different magnifications.

The scanning electron microscope analysis of the textures revealed 2 different configurations of the pillars since A and B showed well-rounded shaped tops and C and D flat tops. The measured highest contact angles were comprised between 108.1° and 112.7°, reflecting an improved hydrophobicity of the occluders. All the textures exhibited, to different extents, an orientation (horizontal or vertical), which was strictly related to the observed anisotropy.
