This physiological process includes not only the resorption of hard tissues of deciduous teeth, such as dentin and cementum, but also the elimination of soft tissues, such as pulp and periodontal ligament (PDL). However, the mechanisms of physiological root resorption are not yet clear. In this article, the advances of research on the mechanisms related to physiological root resorption will be reviewed in two main aspects hard tissues and soft tissues of deciduous teeth, specifically in relation to the effects of inflammatory microenvironment and mechanical stress on the resorption of hard tissues, the repair of hard tissues, and the elimination and the histological events of soft tissues.
Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are chronic diseases that affect the various aspects of a patient's life. However, the impact of living with PIDs is poorly described.
This study aimed to explore the living experience challenges among the Malaysian caregivers of the patients with PID who underwent a follow-up in the Universiti Sains Malaysia or those registered members of the Malaysian PIDs Society.
The study was conducted from March 1 to May 30, 2021. The parents of children with PIDs were invited to participate for a semi-structured in-depth interview at the PID clinics in the USM. Oxyphenisatin The estimated time of each interview was 30 min. The semi-structured interview was performed
a telephone call because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The audio recording of each interview was transcribed and translated from Malay to English. Subsequently, a thematic analysis utilizing the ATLAS.ti software was performed.
The thematic analysis revealed five main themes, which are living with fear and anxiety with four sub-themes (sickness, psychological issues, fear of infections and hereditary issues), PID healthcare support struggles with four sub-themes (PID health system, treatment, diagnosis and financial issues), knowledge with two sub-themes (educational issues and disease understanding), social constraint with two sub-themes (relationships and social isolations) and coping with three sub-themes (acceptance, child health improvement and emotional hygiene).

There are estimated 20% of mechanically ventilated patients having difficulty in weaning from the ventilators, and the weaning process accounts for 40% of the whole ventilation time. Reliable tools are urgently needed to estimate the weaning outcome. Diaphragmatic ultrasonography, as a relatively good predictive method for the adults, was measured in this study, assessing the value of each indicator of diaphragmatic ultrasonography to predict the outcomes of ventilator weaning from mechanically ventilated children of 1-3 years old.
Between November 2018 and November 2019, children who were mechanically ventilated and ready for weaning in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) were enrolled in the study. Recently, deleterious heterozygous variants in KMT5B were implicated in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and/or autism spectrum disorder. We describe three unrelated patients with global developmental delay (GDD) or ID, macrocephaly and additional features. Using whole exome sequencing, each of the probands was found to harbor a distinct de novo heterozygous disease-causing variant in KMT5B c.541C > G (p.His181Asp); c.833A > T (p.Asn278Ile); or c.391_394delAAAG (p.Lys131GlufsTer6). We discuss herein their clinical presentations, and compare them to those of previously reported patients. Furthermore, using a three-dimensional computational model of the KMT5B protein, we demonstrate the predicted structural effects of the two missense variants. Our findings support the role of de novo missense and nonsense variants in KMT5B-associated GDD/ID, and suggest that this gene should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders accompanied by macrocephaly and/or overgrowth.
Epidemiological studies suggest a link between eczema and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but underlying mechanisms have not been examined.
We aim to investigate the association between eczema and subsequent ADHD symptoms in the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes cohort and explore the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines and gut microbiome.
The modified International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire and Computerized Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children Version IV were administered to assess reported eczema within the first 18 months and presence of ADHD symptoms at 54 months, respectively. Skin prick testing at 18 months, cytokines in maternal blood during pregnancy and cord blood and the mediating role of the gut microbiome at 24 months were assessed.
After adjusting for confounders, eczema with or without a positive skin prick test was associated with doubling the risk of ADHD symptoms. No differences in maternal and cord blood cytokines were observed in children with and without eczema, or children with and without ADHD. Gut microbiome dysbiosis was observed in children with eczema and children with ADHD. Children with eczema also had lower gut bacterial Shannon diversity. However, the relationship between eczema and ADHD was not mediated by gut microbiome.
Early life eczema diagnosis is associated with a higher risk of subsequent ADHD symptoms in children. We found no evidence for underlying inflammatory mechanism or mediation by gut microbiome dysbiosis. Further research should evaluate other mechanisms underlying the link between eczema and ADHD.

Diagnostic testing has evolved greatly over the last 20 years; initial testing with pH-metry to measure esophageal acid reflux burden has evolved into measurement of both acid and non-acid reflux and liquid and gas reflux. However, measuring reflux burden alone only tells a small part of the GERD story and many symptoms originally thought to be reflux related are, in fact, related to other disorder which mimic reflux. The current paradigm which involves empiric treatment of symptoms with acid suppression has been replaced with early testing for not only gastroesophageal reflux but also for other diagnostic masqueraders. The focus for interventions has shifted away from acid suppression toward motility interventions and includes a greater recognition of both functional and motility disorders which present with reflux symptoms.
Coronary artery lesions including aneurysm, as the most severe complications of Kawasaki disease (KD), remain of great concern. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is implicated in the regulation of inflammatory response and lipid metabolism. Since excessive inflammatory response and aberrant lipid metabolism have involved in the development of KD, we in this study sought to investigate the relationship between coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) and Lp-PLA2 and other blood parameters in children with KD.
The participants included 71 KD patients, 63 healthy controls (HCs) and 51 febrile controls (FCs). KD patients were divided into KD-CAA (KD with CAA) group and KD-NCAA (KD without CAA) group. Serum Lp-PLA2 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Other routine clinical parameters were also detected.
Serum Lp-PLA2 levels in KD group [4.83 μg/mL (3.95-6.77)] were significantly higher than those in HC [1.29 μg/mL (0.95-2.05)] and FC [1.74 μg/mL (1.18-2.74)] groups. KD-CAA group [5.56 μg/mL (4.55-22.01)] presented substantially higher serum Lp-PLA2 levels as compared with KD-NCAA group [4.64 μg/mL (2.60-5.55)]. In KD group, serum Lp-PLA2 level was positively related with erythrocyte sedimentation rate, the levels of leukocytes, platelets, albumin, creatine kinase-MB, and D-dimer, and the
scores of left main CA, right CA, left anterior descending CA, and left circumflex CA; and negatively related with mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and mean platelet volume. Moreover, receiver operating characteristic curves showed that Lp-PLA2 exhibited superior and moderate diagnostic performance for distinguishing KD patients from HC and FC ones, respectively, and possessed the potential ability to predict the occurrence of CAAs in KD.
Lp-PLA2 may be related to KD and the formation of CAAs, and thus may serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker for KD.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, breastmilk has been studied for its antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. Based on these assumptions, we conducted a preliminary study in order to investigate the prevalence of long COVID in a cohort of Italian children with previously detected SARS-CoV-2 infection and evaluate if breastfeeding might play a role in modulating long COVID occurrence.
