To evaluate the effect of different demographic, clinical and social factors on diabetic patients' quality of life (QOL).
A cross sectional study conducted on patients with type 2 diabetes who attended King Abdulaziz University Hospital outpatient clinics between February and March 2017. The patients were asked about sociodemographic data including age, sex, educational level, exercise history and marital status in addition to clinical data such as duration of diabetes, presence of comorbidities as well as medication history. The patients' QOL were assessed using EQ-5D-5L Arabic version.
131 participants were included in the study with a median age 55years old. Forty five percent of participants were male. Regarding EQ-5D scores, there were significant correlation with gender, exercise, hypertension, heart disease, marital status, educational level and duration of diabetes while there was a significant difference in EQ-VAS scores with respect to heart disease, level of education and duration of diabetes.

Existing research predominantly considers only a single level of interaction; however, serious health complications may result from multi-pathway DDIs, and so new methods are needed to enable predicting and preventing complex DDIs. This article introduces a novel method for the prediction of DDIs at two pharmacological levels (metabolic and transporter interactions) by means of a rule-based model implemented with Semantic Web technologies. The chemotherapy agent irinotecan is used as a case study for demonstrating the validity of this approach. Mechanistic and interaction data were mined from available sources and then used to predict interactors of irinotecan, including potential DDIs mediated by previously unidentified mechanisms. The findings also draw attention to the profound variation between DDI resources, indicating that clinical practice would see significant value from the development of an evidence-based resource to support DDI identification.Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease characterized by degeneration of the joint complex due to cartilage destruction. Fraxetin, a widely used and studied coumarin compound extracted from a traditional Chinese herb (Qin Pi), has shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but its effects on OA have not been studied. In the present study, western blotting, immunofluorescence, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) were used to evaluate the effects of fraxetin on IL-1β-induced apoptotic activity, inflammatory responses, and catabolism in rat chondrocytes. The results showed that fraxetin prevented IL-1β-induced apoptosis of chondrocytes and inhibited inflammatory mediator release by regulating the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MyD88)/nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathway in chondrocytes. Additionally, fraxetin suppressed the upregulation of matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13) and degradation of collagen II in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Moreover, the effects of fraxetin in vivo were assessed in a monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced rat model of OA using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Safranin O-fast green staining and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results showed that fraxetin protected the cartilage against destruction. In conclusion, fraxetin could be a potential therapeutic for OA.
Brazilian protected areas are essential for plant conservation in the Atlantic Forest domain, one of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of "Parque Nacional do Caparaó" (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website "Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil." Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the List. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD) and five as priorities for conservation. Fifity-one species were possible new ocurrences for ES and MG states.

Here, we characterized the function of mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 from Oryza officinalis Wall. ex Watt encoded by OrMKK3. Different alternative splicing variants occurred in OrMKK3. Green fluorescent protein (GFP)-OrMKK3 fusion proteins localized to the cell membrane and nuclei of rice protoplasts. Overexpression of OrMKK3 influenced the expression levels of the grain size-related genes SMG1, GW8, GL3, GW2, and DEP3. Phylogenetic analysis showed that OrMKK3 is well conserved in plants while showing large amounts of variation between indica, japonica, and wild rice. In addition, OrMKK3 slightly influenced brassinosteroid (BR) responses and the expression levels of BR-related genes. Our findings thus identify a new gene, OrMKK3, influencing morphology and grain size and that represents a possible link between mitogen-activated protein kinase and BR response pathways in grain growth.

Among the many intervention programs for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is one of the few approaches that has succeeded in demonstrating clinical efficacy in randomized control trials. Here, we inves-tigate the clinical efficacy of ESDM intervention in young children with ASD in a community setting within Japan.
All subjects were children with ASD who received ESDM intervention during the study period. Each ESDM session lasted 75 min and occurred once per week for at least 12 weeks. The outcome measures consisted of the Kyoto Scale of Psychological Develop-ment (K-test), Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Japanese version (ABC-J), and the Clinical Global Impression-Severity scale (CGI-S).
Twenty-seven subjects (29.4±6.4 months old) received ESDM intervention that lasted for 8.0±2.6 months on average. The score on Language and Social developmental quotient on the K-test increased significantly after the intervention. The total scores on the ABC-J and CGI-S significantly decreased after completion of the ESDM intervention.
Our results suggest that ESDM intervention could reduce the severity of distinct clinical features of ASD, such as impair-ments in social interaction and communication assessed by the K-test, and maladaptive behavior rated by the ABC-J and CGI-S. We be-lieve that the ESDM adapted to each institution might become one of the standard options for children with ASD in Japan.

This study aimed to examine the effect of maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the attention-deficit/hyper-activity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in the offspring and to examine the mediating role of antepartum health risk on the intergenera-tional transmission of maternal ACEs.
The participants consisted of 461 mother-child dyads. Mothers completed the ACEs questionnaire and Diagnostic Predictive Scales. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the risk of ADHD symptoms in the offspring of mothers with ACEs and the mediating effect of antepartum health risks by path analysis.
In all, 35.4% (n=163) had at least one maternal ACE, and 11.1% (n=51) had three or more. Compared to the non-ADHD symp-tom group, the group of offspring with ADHD symptoms showed a significant association with maternal ACE score (p<0.001) and an-tepartum health risks (p<0.001).
