Family functioning is associated with anxiety and depression. Perinatal depression and anxiety are common and influence the well-being of women, partners and their offspring. However, little is known about differences in associations between family functioning and mood symptoms in women and their partners in early pregnancy.

Investigating differences in associations between family functioning and anxious and depressive symptoms in women and their partners in early pregnancy.

In total, 171 woman-partner pairs were enrolled. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item scale (GAD-7) and Family Assessment Device (FAD) were performed. Correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were applied to investigate the associations.

In pregnant women, all the subscale scores on the FAD were correlated with total scores on the EPDS and GAD-7 (all

< 0.05), whereas only the Roles subscale showed a predicting effect iin pregnant women and their partners. This study also provides a basis for family health education in early pregnancy.Heat stroke that may cause acute central nervous system dysfunction, multiple organ dysfunction and even death has become a typical health problem in tropical developing countries. The primary goal of heat stroke treatment is to lower core body temperature, which necessitates physical or medical cooling in time. Here, we design a new self-powered wearable brain-machine-interface system for real-time monitoring and regulating body temperature. This system can monitor body temperature in real time and transmit neural electrical stimulation signals into specific brain regions to lower the body temperature. The whole system can work without an external power supply and be powered by the body itself through the piezoelectric effect. The system comprises a temperature detecting unit, a power supply unit, a data processing module, and a brain stimulator. Demonstration of the system with stimulation electrodes implanted in the median preoptic nucleus brain region in mice reveals an evident decrease in body temperature (1.0 °C within 15 min). This self-powered strategy provides a new concept for future treatment of heat stroke and can extend the application of brain-machine-interface systems in medical care. The site selective C(sp2)-H bond functionalization of olefins has been achieved through a visible-light-induced photoredox-quinuclidine dual catalysis upon merging the quinuclidinium radical cation addition to alkene strategy and the distal heteroaryl ipso-migration strategy. This synthetic protocol features a simple operation with readily available starting materials in good step-economy to access alkenylheteroaromatic products in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. A plausible cascade catalytic reaction mechanism is also proposed.Streptococcus pyogenes is a major human-specific bacterial pathogen and a common cause of a wide range of symptoms from mild infection such as pharyngitis (commonly called strep throat) to life-threatening invasive infection and post-infectious sequelae. Traditional methods for diagnosis include collecting a sample using a pharyngeal swab, which can cause discomfort and even discourage adults and children from seeking proper testing and treatment in the clinic. Saliva samples are an alternative to pharyngeal swabs. To improve the testing experience for strep throat, we developed a novel lollipop-inspired sampling platform (called CandyCollect) to capture bacteria in saliva. The device can be used in clinics or in the home and shipped back to a lab for analysis, integrating with telemedicine. CandyCollect is designed to capture bacteria on an oxygen plasma treated polystyrene surface embedded with flavoring substances to enhance the experience for children and inform the required time to complete the sampling process. In addition, the open channel structure prevents the tongue from scraping and removing the captured bacteria. The flavoring substances did not affect bacterial capture and the device has a shelf life of at least 2 months (with experiments ongoing to extend the shelf life). We performed a usability study with 17 participants who provided feedback on the device design and the dissolving time of the candy. This technology and advanced processing techniques, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), will enable user-friendly and effective diagnosis of streptococcal pharyngitis.A tunable multimode white emission Ca2(Mg0.5Al0.5)(Si1.5Al0.5O7)Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor was prepared by doping Eu2O3 in molten high-aluminum blast furnace slag. The structural probe Eu2+ was studied during phase transformation between the glassy state and Ca2(Mg0.5Al0.5)(Si1.5Al0.5O7) crystals based on site-selective Eu2+ occupancy. When the doped Eu2+ ions occupied two different Ca2+ sites in the matrix, blue light (421 nm) and green light (516 nm) emissions were observed corresponding to two types of Eu2+Ca2+, namely Eu2+Ca2+ (Mg2+ → Al3+) and Eu2+Ca2+ (Si4+ → Al3+). The effects of Eu concentration (0.1-2.0 mol%), heat treatment temperature (800-1000 °C), and thermal quenching temperature (30-150 °C) on the structural evolution of the emission unit were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The Eu2+Ca2+ (Mg2+ → Al3+) structure formed by site-selective Eu2+ occupancy possessed better structural stability in the Ca2(Mg0.5Al0.5)(Si1.5Al0.5O7) crystal matrix, in favour of light-emitting diode (LED) illumination and plasma display panels (PDPs).Humans with salt-sensitive hypertension demonstrate increased morbidity, increased mortality, and renal end-organ damage when compared with normotensive subjects or those with salt-resistant hypertension. Substantial evidence from humans and animals has also demonstrated the role of dietary components other than salt to modulate hypertension. Evidence presented in this review provides support for the view that immunity and inflammation serve to amplify the development of salt-sensitive hypertension and leads to malignant disease accompanied by end-organ damage. Interestingly, salt-sensitive disease is modulated by changes in dietary protein intake, which also influences immune mechanisms. find more Together, the evidence presented in this review from animal and human studies indicates that changes in dietary protein source have profound effects on the gut microbiota, microbiota-derived metabolites, DNA methylation, gene expression, immune cell activation, the production of cytokines and other factors, and the development of salt-sensitive hypertension and related disease phenotypes. We have recently reported a series of half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complexes with curcuminoid ligands showing excellent cytotoxic activities (particularly ionic derivatives containing PTA (PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane). In the present study, new members of this family of compounds have been prepared with the objective to investigate the effect of a long hydrophobic chain obtained by replacing the OH-groups, present in curcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin, with the palmitic acid ester. We report the synthesis of ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) p-cymene derivatives containing palmitic acid curcumin ester ligands ((1E,3Z,6E)-3-hydroxy-5-oxohepta-1,3,6-triene-1,7-diyl)bis(2-methoxy-4,1-phenylene)dipalmitate (p-curcH) and ((1E,3Z,6E)-3-hydroxy-5-oxohepta-1,3,6-triene-1,7-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene)dipalmitate (p-bdcurcH). Complexes [M(II)(cym)(p-curc)/(p-bdcurc)(Cl)] 1-4 (M = Ru or Os) are neutral, whereas [M(II)(cym)(p-curc)/(p-bdcurc)(PTA)][SO3CF3] 5-8 are salts obtained when the chloride ligand is replaced by the PTA ligand. Stability studies performed on 1-8 in DMSO-PBS under physiological conditions (pH = 7.4) indicate that the complexes remain intact. The complexes exhibit potent and selective cytotoxic activity against an ovarian carcinoma cell line and its cisplatin-resistant form (A2780 and A2780cis), and non-cancerous human embryonic kidney (HEK293T) cells. To define the structure-activity relationships (SAR), the compounds have been compared with other Ru(II) and Os(II) complexes with curcuminoid ligands previously reported. SAR data reveal that the bisdemethoxycurcumin complexes are generally more active and selective than analogous curcumin-containing complexes.

Cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) have been implicated in cardiac dysfunction and toxicity associated with doxorubicin (DOX). Although TNFα can elicit different cellular responses, including survival or death, the mechanisms underlying these divergent outcomes in the heart remain cryptic. The E3 ubiquitin ligase TRAF2 (TNF receptor associated factor 2) provides a critical signaling platform for K63-linked polyubiquitination of RIPK1 (receptor interacting protein 1), crucial for nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation by TNFα and survival. Here, we investigate alterations in TNFα-TRAF2-NF-κB signaling in the pathogenesis of DOX cardiotoxicity.

Using a combination of in vivo (4 weekly injections of DOX 5 mg·kg

·wk

) in C57/BL6J mice and in vitro approaches (rat, mouse, and human inducible pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiac myocytes), we monitored TNFα levels, lactate dehydrogenase, cardiac ultrastructure and function, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and cardiac cell viability.

In contrast totion of TRAF2 and DOX-induced cell death. Furthermore, wild-type TRAF2, but not a RING finger mutant defective for K63-linked polyubiquitination of RIPK1, restored NF-κB signaling and suppressed DOX-induced cardiac cell death. Last, cardiomyocyte-restricted expression of TRAF2 (cardiac troponin T-adeno-associated virus 9-TRAF2) in vivo protected against mitochondrial defects and cardiac dysfunction induced by DOX.

Our findings reveal a novel signaling axis that functionally connects the cardiotoxic effects of DOX to proteasomal degradation of TRAF2. Disruption of the critical TRAF2 survival pathway by DOX sensitizes cardiac myocytes to TNFα-mediated necrotic cell death and DOX cardiotoxicity.

The eastern migratory population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) has declined markedly over the last few decades, in part due to variation in breeding-season climate. Here, we combined a retrospective, annual-cycle model for the eastern monarch population with climate projections within the spring breeding grounds in eastern Texas and across the summer breeding grounds in the midwestern U.S. and southern Ontario, Canada to evaluate how monarchs are likely to respond to climate change over the next century. Our results reveal that projected changes in breeding-season climate are likely to lead to decreases in monarch abundance, with high potential for overwintering population size to fall below the historical minimum three or more times in the next two decades. Climatic changes across the expansive summer breeding grounds will also cause shifts in the distribution of monarchs, with higher projected abundances in areas that become wetter but not appreciably hotter (e.
