Neutron test campaigns on silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) power MOSFETs and IGBTs were conducted at the TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics) Mark II (Pavia, Italy) nuclear reactor and ChipIr-ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (Didcot, U.K.) facility. About 2000 power transistors made by STMicroelectronics were tested in all the experiments. Tests with thermal and fast neutrons (up to about 10 MeV) at the TRIGA Mark II reactor showed that single-event burnout (SEB) failures only occurred at voltages close to the rated drain-source voltage. Thermal neutrons did not induce SEB, nor degradation in the electrical parameters of the devices. SEB failures during testing at ChipIr with ultra-fast neutrons (1-800 MeV) were evaluated in terms of failure in time (FIT) versus derating voltage curves according to the JEP151 procedure of the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC). These curves, even if scaled with die size and avalanche voltage, were strongly linked to the technological processes of the devices, although a common trend was observed that highlighted commonalities among the failures of different types of MOSFETs. In both experiments, we observed only SEB failures without single-event gate rupture (SEGR) during the tests. None of the power devices that survived the neutron tests were degraded in their electrical performances. A study of the worst-case bias condition (gate and/or drain) during irradiation was performed. For the first time, the effect of the side-chain in polyalkylmethylsiloxane towards pervaporative removal of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) from water was studied. The noticeable enhancement of separation factor during the pervaporation of 1 wt.% MTBE solution in water through the dense film (40-50 µm) can be achieved by substitution of a methyl group (separation factor 111) for heptyl (161), octyl (169) or decyl (180) one in polyalkylmethylsiloxane. Composite membrane with the selective layer (~8 µm) made of polydecylmethylsiloxane (M10) on top of microfiltration support (MFFK membrane) demonstrated MTBE/water separation factor of 310, which was 72% greater than for the dense film (180). A high separation factor together with an overall flux of 0.82 kg·m-2·h-1 allowed this M10/MFFK composite membrane to outperform the commercial composite membranes. The analysis of the concentration polarization modulus and the boundary layer thickness revealed that the feed flow velocity should be gradually increased from 5 cm·s-1 for an initial solution (1 wt.% of MTBE in water) to 13 cm·s-1 for a depleted solution (0.2 wt.% of MTBE in water) to overcome the concentration polarization phenomena in case of composite membrane M10/MFFK (Texp = 50 °C).The severe deterioration of a cement asphalt (CA) mortar layer may lead to the movement of the upper concrete slab and impair the safety of the speedy train. In this study, a test specimen simulating the structure of high-speed rail track slabs was embedded with delaminated cracks in various lateral sizes inside the CA mortar layer. Impact-echo tests (IE) were performed above the flawed and flawless locations. In present study, the IE method is chosen to assess defects in the CA mortar layer. Both traditional IE and normalized IE are used for data interpolation. The normalized IE are the simulated transfer function of the original IE response. The peak amplitudes in the normalized amplitude spectrum and the peak frequency in the traditional amplitude spectrum for the top concrete overlay were used to develop simple indicators for identifying the integrity of the CA mortar layer. The index was based on the difference of the experimental peak amplitude and frequency of the ones calculated from previously developed formulas for plates without substrates. As a result, the technique does not require an experimental baseline for the crack assessment. A field test and analysis procedure for evaluating high-speed rail slab systems are proposed. The effects of gluten free diet (GFD) on body mass index (BMI) and growth parameters in pediatric patients with celiac disease (CD) and their dependence on different socio-cultural environments are poorly known. We conducted an international retrospective study on celiac patients diagnosed at the University of Verona, Italy, and at the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA, as underweight. A total of 140 celiac children and 140 controls (mean age 8.4 years) were enrolled in Chicago; 125 celiac children and 125 controls (mean age 7.3 years, NS) in Verona. At time of diagnosis, Italian celiac children had a weight slightly lower (p = 0.060) and a BMI z-score significantly (p less then 0.001) lower than their American counterparts. On GFD, Italian celiac children showed an increased prevalence of both underweight (19%) as well as overweight (9%), while American children showed a decrease prevalence of overweight/obese. We concluded that while the GFD had a similar impact on growth of celiac children in both countries, the BMI z-score rose more in American than in Italian celiac children. Additionally, in Italy, there was an alarming increase in the proportion of celiac children becoming underweight. We speculate that lifestyle and cultural differences may explain the observed variations.Pterocarpus is a genus of trees mainly distributed in tropical Asia, Africa, and South America. Some species of Pterocarpus are rosewood tree species, having important economic value for timber, and for some species, medicinal value as well. Up to now, information about this genus with regard to the genomic characteristics of the chloroplasts has been limited. Based on a combination of next-generation sequencing (Illumina Hiseq) and long-read sequencing (PacBio), the whole chloroplast genomes (cp genomes) of five species (rosewoods) in Pterocarpus (Pterocarpus macrocarpus, P. santalinus, P. indicus, P. pedatus, P. marsupium) have been assembled. The cp genomes of five species in Pterocarpus have similar structural characteristics, gene content, and sequence to other flowering plants. The cp genomes have a typical four-part structure, containing 110 unique genes (77 protein coding genes, 4 rRNAs, 29 tRNAs). Through comparative genomic analysis, abundant simple sequence repeat (SSR)loci (333-349) were detected in Pterocarpus, among which A /T single nucleotide repeats accounted for the highest proportion (72.8-76.4%). In the five cp genomes of Pterocarpus, eight hypervariable regions, including trnH-GUG_psbA, trnS-UGA_psbC, accD-psaI, ndhI-exon2_ndhI-exon1, ndhG_ndhi-exon2, rpoC2-exon2, ccsA, and trnfM-CAU, are proposed for use as DNA barcode regions. In the comparison of gene selection pressures (P. santalinus as the reference genome), purifying selection was inferred as the primary mode of selection in maintaining important biological functions. Phylogenetic analysis shows that Pterocarpus is a monophyletic group. The species P. tinctorius is resolved as early diverging in the genus. Pterocarpus was resolved as sister to the genus Tipuana. The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence of pregnancy loss (PL; between 28-110 pregnancy days) and its relationship with factors farm, year (2015-2018), season, artificial insemination (AI)-rank, parity, AI-type (fixed-time vs. oestrus-AI), previous PL, days in milk (DIM), fixed-time-AI protocol, AI-technician, bull, and semen-type (sexed vs. conventional). Data of 19,437 Holstein cattle AIs from eight Spanish farms were studied. Overall conception rate was 34.3% (6696/19,437) and PL 12.3% (822/6696). The PL was more likely to occur in primiparous (10.8%, odds ratio (OR) = 1.35; p = 0.04) and multiparous (15.3%; OR = 2.02, p less then 0.01) than in heifers (PL = 6.9%, reference). Pregnancies achieved with AI after observed oestrus and natural breedings were associated with less PL than pregnancies after fixed-time-AI (12.7 vs. 11.9%; OR = 0.12, p = 0.01). First AIs related to higher PL than ≥2nd AIs (PL = 13.8% vs. 11.2; OR = 0.73, p less then 0.01). The factors season, fixed-time-AI protocol, DIM, bull, AI-technician, or type of semen were not significantly associated with PL. Therefore, farmers and consultants should adapt their preventive strategies relating to PL, particularly, to the parity of the cattle. Background the apicomplexan parasite Neospora caninum causes important reproductive problems in farm animals, most notably in cattle. After infection via oocysts or tissue cysts, rapidly dividing tachyzoites infect various tissues and organs, and in immunocompetent hosts, they differentiate into slowly dividing bradyzoites, which form tissue cysts and constitute a resting stage persisting within infected tissues. Bumped kinase inhibitors (BKIs) of calcium dependent protein kinase 1 are promising drug candidates for the treatment of Neospora infections. Antiviral inhibitor BKI-1294 exposure of cell cultures infected with N. caninum tachyzoites results in the formation of massive multinucleated complexes (MNCs) containing numerous newly formed zoites, which remain viable for extended periods of time under drug pressure in vitro. MNC and tachyzoites exhibit considerable antigenic and structural differences. Methods Using shotgun mass spectrometry, we compared the proteomes of tachyzoites to BKI-1294 induced MNCs, and analyzed the mRNA expression levels of selected genes in both stages. Results More than half of the identified proteins are downregulated in MNCs as compared to tachyzoites. Only 12 proteins are upregulated, the majority of them containing SAG1 related sequence (SRS) domains, and some also known to be expressed in bradyzoites Conclusions MNCs exhibit a proteome different from tachyzoites, share some bradyzoite-like features, but may constitute a third stage, which remains viable and ensures survival under adverse conditions such as drug pressure. We propose the term "baryzoites" for this stage (from Greek βαρυσ = massive, bulky, heavy, inert).Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening disease characterized by significant vascular remodeling and aberrant expression of genes involved in inflammation, apoptosis resistance, proliferation, and metabolism. Effective therapeutic strategies are limited, as mechanisms underlying PH pathophysiology, especially abnormal expression of genes, remain unclear. Most PH studies on gene expression have focused on gene transcription. However, post-transcriptional alterations have been shown to play a critical role in inflammation and metabolic changes in diseases such as cancer and systemic cardiovascular diseases. In these diseases, RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) have been recognized as important regulators of aberrant gene expression via post-transcriptional regulation; however, their role in PH is less clear. Identifying RBPs in PH is of great importance to better understand PH pathophysiology and to identify new targets for PH treatment. In this manuscript, we review the current knowledge on the role of dysregulated RBPs in abnormal mRNA gene expression as well as aberrant non-coding RNA processing and expression (e.g., miRNAs) in PH.There is still a need for improving the treatment of breast cancer with doxorubicin (DOX). In this paper, we functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with DOX and studied the DOX-induced antitumor effects in breast cancer cells (BT474) in the presence of magnetic hyperthermia (43 °C, 1 h). We show that i) intratumoral application of DOX-functionalized MNPs (at least at a concentration of 9.6 nmol DOX/100 mm3 tumor volume) combined with magnetic hyperthermia favors tumor regression in vivo, and there is evidence for an increased effect compared to magnetic hyperthermia alone or to the intratumoral application of free DOX and ii) the presence of the pseudopeptide NucAnt (N6L) on the MNP surface might well be beneficial in its function as carrier for MNP internalization into breast cancer cells in vitro, which could further augment the possibility of the induction of intracellular heating spots and cell death in the future.
