The genus Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 is the largest group within the class Myxosporea and includes 905 nominal species, 18 of which have been found to infect fish belonging to the family Salmonidae. In the present study, microscopic analysis enabled detection of myxospores in 43 of 613 (7.0%) gastrointestinal tracts from brown trout (Salmo trutta) captured in several rivers in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Measurement of the whole myxospores, polar capsules and other morphological characteristics, together with identification of the site of infection, has led us to propose a novel salmonid-myxobolid species, Myxobolus compostellanus n. sp. Molecular analysis of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU-rRNA) gene yielded the same consensus sequence of 2039 bp in 14 fish specimens. A BLAST search indicated 97.6% similarity to Myxobolus neurobius. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. compostellanus n. sp. is clustered with other salmonid-infecting myxobolids. The present findings contribute to the existing knowledge about the genus Myxobolus, providing both morphological and molecular data on a novel species of Myxobolus found to infect the gastrointestinal tract of salmonids, M. compostellanus n. sp. in the brown trout (S. trutta).Bio-invasions are a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystems globally and may contribute to the proliferation of emerging infectious diseases. We examined the prevalence and phylogenetic diversity of avian haemosporidian parasites infecting the non-native house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and the native southern grey-headed sparrows (Passer diffusus). Blood samples from 104 sparrows (74 house sparrows and 30 southern grey-headed sparrows) mist-netted inside and around the Kruger National Park were used. Genomic DNA was extracted from each blood sample and subjected to nested PCR analyses, Sanger sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Overall, 35.57% (37/104) of the birds sampled were infected with at least one haemosporidian parasites. Southern grey-headed sparrows had a higher parasite prevalence (60%) than house sparrows (24.3%). A total of 16 parasite lineages were identified, of which eight were novel lineages. Whereas Haemoproteus spp. showed the highest lineage diversity, Leucocytozoon spp. were the most prevalent parasites, albeit with significant differences between sparrow species. A single Plasmodium sp. infection was recorded in a southern grey-headed sparrow. In support of the enemy release hypothesis, we found that prevalence on non-native house sparrows was lower than prevalence recorded in their region of origin and also that they were infected only by indigenous parasites lineages.
We aim to review evidence of the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare professionals and the effects of the psychological crisis interventions and measures implemented to manage stress.
Mental health problems are frequently encountered in health professionals during emergencies and often prevail over the following years. Results show health professionals exhibited symptoms of depression, anxiety, emotional distress, burnout, post-traumatic stress and poor sleep quality. In response to acute responses to stress, it is crucial to provide psychoeducation, mindfulness and coping resources. These interventions can improve resilience and self-efficacy of professionals, as well as help to prevent anxiety, depression and quality of sleep. The need for intervention programmes targeting the mental health of vulnerable populations has been widely acknowledged. We described a psychological support plan designed and implemented with the aim of providing mental health care for health professionals.Remote sensing is an important tool for environmental assessment, especially in the event of disasters such as the tailings dam burst at the Córrego do Feijão mine, located in the Paraopeba River basin, Brazil. Thus, this study aimed to carry out a spectro-temporal analysis of the Paraopeba River water given the dam burst, using multispectral images from the MSI sensor onboard Sentinel-2 satellites. For this analysis, sections along the river were defined by the creation of buffers, with 10-km intervals each, starting from the origin of the burst. 3-MA nmr For each section, the average visible to near-infrared (NIR) reflectance values per band and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) were obtained. We found that the red edge and NIR bands (B5, B6, B7, B8, and B8A) showed higher reflectance values when compared to the visible bands in the months immediately after the disaster, especially in the first 20 km. In these months, negative NDWI values were also found for almost all sections downstream, demonstrating the large volume of mining tailings in the Paraopeba River. The seasonal variation of the observed values indicates the resuspension of the material deposited at the river bottom with the beginning of the rainy season. Finally, we highlight the usefulness of the MSI/Sentinel-2 red edge and NIR bands for further studies on the monitoring from space of water bodies subjected to contamination by large amounts of mud with iron ore tailings and contaminants, as occurred in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil.
DNA double-strand breaks may evoke cell death or cancer. Cells have developed two fundamentally different mechanisms of DNA double-strand repair the accurate mechanism of homologous recombination repair and the error-prone nonhomologous end joining. The deficiency of homologous recombination repair (HRD) is afrequent feature of several solid tumor entities and is associated with sensitivity to poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor therapy.
Among other biomarkers, HRD testing provides an opportunity to guide PARP inhibitor therapy in solid tumors, but the basic principles are complex and the use and benefits of the different methodologies remain controversial. Knowledge of the underlying mechanisms at the molecular level will advance our understanding and will pave the way to introduce the testing of new biomarkers.
An overview of the fundamental mechanisms of DNA repair is provided. Important terms like HRR, HRD, and BRCAness are defined, and analysis methods are described, especially with regardes commercial assays, different tests might be used for the analysis of HRD. The application depends, among other things, on the local situation and has to be extensively validated. With the long-term mining activation and use of coal, ecological environment of mining area has been damaged to a certain extent. As one of the 13 large coal bases in China, Huainan coal mining area was selected to evaluate the ecosystem service value and ecological storage value. Remote sensing images of 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015 based on Landsat series in Huainan mining area were employed to obtain the classification information of the surface. Referring to the existing research results, ecological service value was computed. By using a mining area ecological storage model, estimation of ecological storage were studied. Results showed that ecological service value and ecological storage both showed a downward trend. Finally, the paper put forward the comprehensive treatment countermeasures and remediation strategy of ecological environment.
To investigate the associations of different types of carbohydrate intake after breast cancer diagnosis with breast cancer-specific and all-cause mortality.
We prospectively assessed post-diagnostic intake of total sugar, added sugar, and natural sugar as well as carbohydrate from different sources, among 8932 women with stage I-III breast cancer that were identified in the Nurses' Health Study from 1980 to 2010 and Nurses' Health Study II from 1991 to 2011. Participants completed a validated food frequency questionnaire every four years after diagnosis and were followed up for death.
We prospectively documented 1071 deaths due to breast cancer and 2532 all-cause deaths, over a mean of 11.5years of follow-up. After adjustment for confounding variables, greater post-diagnostic total sugar intake was suggestively associated with greater risk of breast cancer-specific mortality [hazard ratio (HR)
= 1.16, 95%confidence interval (CI )= 0.95-1.41; P
= 0.02] and significantly associated with greater risk odrate from potatoes was suggestively associated with higher risk of breast cancer-specific mortality and carbohydrate from refined grains was suggestively associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality.
We found that higher total sugar intake, especially added sugar, sucrose, and fructose, as well as carbohydrate from fruit juice after a breast cancer diagnosis were associated with poorer prognosis. High post-diagnostic intake of carbohydrate from vegetables was associated with reduced risk of mortality.

Information on the association between diet and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in type 1 diabetes (T1D) is scarce. We assessed the association between biomarkers of fatty acid (FA) intake and the presence of carotid plaques (a surrogate marker of future CVD events) in this high-risk population.
Cross-sectional study in 167 consecutive T1D patients without CVD and with at least one of the following ≥ 40years, diabetic nephropathy, or ≥ 10years of T1D duration with another CVD risk factor. link3 The FA profile of erythrocyte membranes was determined by gas chromatography, and the number of carotid plaques (intima-media thickness ≥ 1.5mm) was assessed by ultrasonography. Regression models were constructed adjusting for classical (age, gender, blood pressure, smoking habit, LDL-cholesterol, body mass index and statins) and T1D-specific risk factors (diabetes duration, HbA1c and chronic complications).
A total of 58.7% were men (mean age 48.3 ± 10.3years, T1D duration 27.2 ± 10.1years). Sixty-one patients (36.5%) showed carotid plaque. Linoleic acid decreased and all-C181trans increased with the number of carotid plaques (none, 1-2, ≥ 3 plaques; p for trend < 0.05). In multivariate regression models, linoleic acid remained inversely associated with the presence of plaque [1% increase of total FAs; OR 0.71 (0.53-0.95), p = 0.021] and ≥ 2 plaques [OR 0.70 (0.51-0.98), p = 0.039]; whereas, all-C181trans was positively associated with ≥ 3 plaques (0.1% increase of total FAs; OR 1.51 [1.05-2.16], p = 0.026).
Erythrocyte FA composition, as a biomarker of FA intake, was independently associated with preclinical atherosclerosis in T1DM. Our data support the potential role of an unfavorable pattern of fat intake and CVD risk in this population.

DENV is a mosquito-borne disease having four serotypes, one or two circulating in epidemic outbreaks. The diagnosis of DENV is challenging mainly due to the circulation of new viruses with remarkable similarities, such as Zika (ZIKV) that may cause fetal microcephaly. DENV affects 390 million people per year, but these numbers may be higher due to the underreported and misclassified cases. Recently, the NS1 nonstructural protein has been described in serum and urine of DENV and ZIKV patients, suggesting its use as a biomarker for screening since a negative NS1 sample confirms the absence of these infections. Herein, a label-free immunosensor comprising an assembled nanostructured thin film of carbon nanotube-ethylenediamine is described. The advantage of in situ electrosynthesis of polymer film is to allow major control of thickness and conductivity, in addition to designing the reactive groups for functionalization.
