These topological discrepancies impact on the inferred phylogenetic position of many fossil taxa. In Crocodylia, morphology-based phylogenetic inferences differ fundamentally in placing Gavialis basal to all other living forms, whereas molecular data consistently unite it with crocodylids. The Cenomanian Portugalosuchus azenhae was recently described as the oldest crown crocodilian, with affinities to Gavialis, based on morphology-only analyses, thus representing a potentially important new molecular clock calibration. Here, we performed analyses incorporating DNA data into these morphological datasets, using scaffold and supermatrix (total evidence) approaches, in order to evaluate the position of basal crocodylians, including Portugalosuchus. Our analyses incorporating DNA data robustly recovered Portugalosuchus outside Crocodylia (as well as thoracosaurs, planocraniids and Borealosuchus spp.), questioning the status of Portugalosuchus as crown crocodilian and any future use as a node calibration in molecular clock studies. Finally, we discuss the impact of ambiguous fossil calibration and how, with the increasing size of phylogenomic datasets, the molecular scaffold might be an efficient (though imperfect) approximation of more rigorous but demanding supermatrix analyses.Animals show vast numerical competence in tasks that require both ordinal and cardinal numerical representations, but few studies have addressed whether animals can identify the numerical middle in a sequence. Two rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) learned to select the middle dot in a horizontal sequence of three dots on a touchscreen. When subsequently presented with longer sequences composed of 5, 7 or 9 items, monkeys transferred the middle rule. Accuracy decreased as the length of the sequence increased. Here, we used the homing motivation of the Manx shearwater to investigate navigational decision making in a wild bird by displacing them 294 km to the far side of a large island (the island of Ireland). Since shearwaters are reluctant to fly over land, the island blocked the direct route home, forcing a navigational decision. Further still, on the far side of the obstacle, we chose a release site where the use of local knowledge could facilitate a 20% improvement in route efficiency if shearwaters were able to anticipate and avoid a large inlet giving the appearance of open water in the home direction. We found that no shearwater took the most efficient initial route home, but instead oriented in the home direction (even once the obstacle became visible). Upon reaching the obstacle, four shearwaters subsequently circumnavigated the land mass via the long route, travelling a further 900 km as a result. We aimed to assess the prevalence of ischemic brain lesions detected by magnetic resonance imaging and their association with cognitive function 3 months after first-time ablation using continuous oral anticoagulation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF).

We performed a prespecified analysis of the AXAFA-AFNET 5 trial (Anticoagulation Using the Direct Factor Xa Inhibitor Apixaban During Atrial Fibrillation Catheter Ablation Comparison to Vitamin K Antagonist Therapy), which randomized 674 patients with AF 11 to uninterrupted apixaban or vitamin K antagonist therapy before first-time ablation. Brain magnetic resonance imaging using fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging was obtained within 3 to 48 hours after AF ablation in all eligible patients enrolled in 25 study centers in Europe and the United States. Patients underwent cognitive assessment 3 to 6 weeks before ablation and 3 months after ablation using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)on (relative risk, 1.02 per 10 years [95% CI, 1.01-1.03]).

Chronic white matter damage as well as acute ischemic lesions detected by brain magnetic resonance imaging were found frequently after first-time ablation for paroxysmal AF using uninterrupted oral anticoagulation. Emerging evidence indicates that the renal collateral circulation can similarly adapt and thereby limit kidney ischemia in atherosclerotic renovascular disease. These adaptations predominantly include recruitment of preexisting microvessels for arteriogenesis, with de novo vessel formation playing a limited role. Yet, adaptations of the renal collateral circulation in renovascular disease are often insufficient to fully compensate for the limited flow within an obstructed renal artery and may be hampered by the severity of obstruction or patient comorbidities. Experimental strategies have attempted to circumvent limitations of collateral formation and improve the prognosis of patients with various ischemic vascular territories. These have included pharmacological approaches such as endothelial growth factors, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockade, and If channel-blockers, as well as interventions like preconditioning, exercise, enhanced external counter-pulsation, and low-energy shock-wave therapy. However, few of these strategies have been implemented in atherosclerotic renovascular disease. This review summarizes current understanding regarding the development of renal collateral circulation in atherosclerotic renovascular disease. Studies are needed to apply lessons learned in other vascular beds in the setting of atherosclerotic renovascular disease to develop new treatment regimens for this patient group.

We examined consecutive patients undergoing right heart catheterization between 2005 and 2016 in a hospital-based cohort. Multivariable Cox models were utilized to examine the association between PAPi and all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiac events, and heart failure hospitalizations.

Coronary microvascular function can be distinctly quantified using the coronary flow reserve (CFR) and index of microvascular resistance (IMR). Patients with low CFR can present with low or high IMR, although the prevalence and clinical characteristics of these patient groups remain unclear.

One hundred ninety-nine patients underwent coronary microvascular assessments using coronary thermodilution techniques.
